First let me say I'm not trolling and I am not a bigot. I have an honest question for the Australian Escapists.

What is with your government?

Over the years I've seen absurd after absurd statements and actions come from the Australian government. These things range all topics from gaming to immigration and everything else I could care to imagine.

I'm an American, and my understanding of Australian history is bare bones, and my understanding of it's politics is even less. So I ask you, what makes your government so insane?

Australia is where the world was Beta-tested. For example, all the animals that didn't make the cut can still be found there(See the Platypus). It only makes sense that since Australia never closed down after the rest of the world was released and is still running on old code that it's political system has some bugs.

It's not Insane, you simply only hear about the insane things... what them being newsworthy.

This may surprise you (though I somehow doubt it will), we only hear about the batshit insane conervative or the "I've been heavily smoking weed for 40 years" braindead hippy liberal Americans. From across the pacific, it doesn't look like you guys have any middle ground.

This is, of course, because nobody every bothers reporting anything in international politics if it's in any way mundane. I assure you we have plenty of unexciting, sensible politicians and even ocassionally a situation put before government is handled quickly and effectively (see John Howard with gun control).

This. We Americans are often left in the dark by our news stations when it comes to stuff from other countries. So we'll often only hear about the crazier stuff. It's up to us to do our own homework.

Same goes for almost every country everywhere, especially America. People don't care what happens in other countries unless it's really violent or really stupid, hence why the news is so depressing.

Pretty much what's been said about the normal things not being reported overseas. But as for the crazy stuff our government does do...

I think it's because we're not a country that's taken seriously. We're a "piggy-back" country. We rely on America for protection, China for our economy and Britain for our reputation. As a result, politicians do everything they can to stand out and make it seem like they're actually trying to make a difference when no one else gives a toss.

Kevin Rudd recently did a speech at the UN.... no one showed up. I think that speaks pretty well for what the rest of the world thinks of us.

It's because our government believes that they know what's best for us and must control every single aspect of our lives since we obviously lack the ability to.
Now that I've had my fight-the-power rant, pretty much what Yassen said really.

Your animals aren't rejects ...your animals are in prison! Every were else we have relatively harmless animals but aus seems to have every kind of killer animal there is.

It's just like real life, most of the killers are away from the "civilized" animals , even the platypus has a poison barb!

On topic though, all England hear about America is how extreme you all seem to be but I am sure it's the minority that are extreme.

^ thats pretty much the case with any country

"there is no news like bad news" or "If no bad news exists, lie and make some up"

That by far is the best quote I have ever read about Australia. It's also weirdly true (at least from the perspective of someone who lived there for 3 years).

On a serious note though, Australia is unlike any other country (save for Antarctica) in it's isolation. The only country that is there to keep it company is New Zealand and while that is a remarkable country in it's own right, it's just a smaller version of Australia..with more sheep. So, you would expect Australia to have it's own weird laws PLUS Australians are also sitting on a really really big pile of Uranium, especially in Tasmania..which kinda explains a lot about Tasmania.

This is the best analogy i have ever heard.

Yes Australia is a bit backwards in the entertainment/art area, there's a lot of censorship being laid down but it honestly doesn't bother or affect me. I could get angry and beat my chest about games not getting released here but it's easy enough to get an import copy of something from Gametraders. The reason for this is games are rarely banned in Australia they just get refused classification sometimes, and even if they are banned i imagine it would not be hard to just buy it online ( i don't know i've never had to do it).

Don't get me started on the problems with the way our country is run. It is a two party conservative government with no left wing with any influence besides The Greens who care more about the environment than anything else. All the cencorship problems stem from that and because we are brought up as an anti-authority culture we do not take politics seriously enough to make a difference.

Basically it is a great place to live in ignorance because daily life is fantastic but if you look into things it gets a bit annoying. Not we are becoming a dystopia bad but not run properly nontheless.

Honestly i think i will leave when i able to sustain myself (finished university and worked for a bit.)

so true

ok OP the australian censorship thing is a fucking joke honestly its pathetic.

immigration, simple, we just dont have the infrastructure to have any more people. some will say that "Australia is under populated, look at the mass of land they have" but the thing is alot of that is uninhabitable desert and our natural woodlands are growing thin. point is Australia cant deal with population growth and we as white Australians would liek the future population to be predominantly white Australians. Some people think this is racist but those people are wrong and i'll tell you why.

Think about this scenario; Your family has been living in a country for between 100-200 years (as my family has, various strands have come and gone but all my direct relatives have been for over 100 years) and your family has seen the country grow as you and your neighbors and fellow settlers(in some cases convicts) have built this country for the future of YOUR people.

Now would you like your country to suddenly have a massive massive influx of new people from other cultures coming living in your country (i dont really have any problem with other cultures as such its just that the main population of people (asians from china and south east asia and arabs)migrating to Australia have cultures that "clash" with ours, this soon becomes very frustrating). Competeting for YOUR countries resources. Oh and its unfortunate that they are often rude and feel like it is THIER home, its not yet but it will be.

Australia resettles more refugees than any other country in the world.

Oh and in most of my classes at school being a white australian is now an ethnic minority.

We are no more insane then everyone else. As people have said already, you only hear about the crazy stuff and nothing about the norm.
