It's tempting to dismiss the ACL as just another fringe group that's completely out of touch with the realities of modern society, but the fact is that members of these organizations have a tendency to do something that a lot of "gamers," to use an admittedly broad term, don't: They vote.
This statement puzzles me a bit, since I thought voting was compulsory for everyone aged 18+ in Australia...

"Many games force the child to identify with the aggressor and children are rewarded for immoral conduct and violent behavior. Research shows that increased playing of violent first person shooter games can significantly increase aggression," the group said. "And remember, even if R18+ games were only sold to adults, they would inevitably find their way into children's hands."

Research also shows cigarettes aren't bad for you, but if you can prove that's right too I might believe yours.

Like eating ghosts and shooting Gorf.
Research shows that increased playing of violent first person shooter games can significantly increase aggression,"
Research shows a lot of things, especially if you never detail WHICH research
the group said. "And remember, even if R18+ games were only sold to adults, they would inevitably find their way into children's hands."
So, all ratings systems are doomed to failure.

Gee, thanks guys. What would Australia do without you in power?

I do hear though that they're concerned about two little boys (with two little toys) as the latest research has shown that wooden horses lead to abandoning military positions.

Speaking as an American, I can feel your pain, Australian gamers (and Christians). Groups like that are an unfortunately big deal here, too.

That is my favorite part of their argument. "Would someone please think of the children!?!?!?"

And by that logic, Australia should ban movies/tv shows that are of the same rating, along with violent sports, and lord help us if they ever learn where babies come from!

I'm sorry to all my Aussie Escapists for having to put up with this shit.
Cheers brother.

But in all seriousness, why don't we just wait for him to die? (Michael Atkinson) It shouldn't be that long should it?

They say that "Research shows that increased playing of violent first person shooter games can significantly increase aggression."
The fact that they don't name a research specifically shows that they are mis informed and talking out of there posterior. I would like to no about this research so that i can look into there credentials and cross reference there finding with other research, such as Grand Theft Childhood(gamer look it up is go some really good points. :) ).
This is like all thous people that say that vaccines give people autism and that they should be banned.

The gaming citizens of Australia have eared my undying admiration for having to put up with this crap. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go and introduce my palm to my face.

Sorry but get your facts right, Australia isn't America and voting in State and Federal elections is mandatory, failure to do so is grounds for a hefty fine. So what you said there is just plain and utterly wrong.

Credit for sharing that detail, but in a way his argument stands. You may be compelled to vote, but are you compelled to vote for the right person? Or do you just randomly check boxes to just do your national duty? You can bet the ACL votes for those who will support any weird thing that they are supporting, digging into each candidate's past with a small spoon if they have to. How many people elected Atkinson into office without having the slightest inkling that he was so pro-censorship? Or how many legislators in Australia owe their place because people thought their name sounded friendly and the leader they wanted without knowing more?
Voting isn't about checking boxes. It is about declaring your choice for the person you feel is best to represent and lead you in your government. And it is your government, even if you don't care to find out the truth. And as long as people don't care about the truth, people like Atkinson remain in power, taking away your power and freedom.

I think South Park did that once.

But what the fuck is wrong with that country's government?!
It makes my Canadian Government look like the perfect democracy.
(If you aren't Canadian, just know that our Parliament is a fucking joke)

Bingo.
I whole heartedly agree with that statement. It's one thing if people were discriminating against christians because of the crusades or the inquisition or something like that; but when people claiming to be christian just keep assaulting other groups it makes it a gajillion times harder for decent Christians to actually make any headway. Instead of condemning people why don't you just forgive them?
Jesus said to turn the other cheek; He meant turn your cheek. For the love of Him that is holy stop slapping other people around already.

And that's where I knew these people were another bunch of ill-informed wackos. Who said anything about children? If anything, the R18+ rating will prevent children from accessing explicit content, as it stands now, many games which will be rated 18+ or the equivalent abroad is rated 15+ in Australia just so that it can get published. This is nonsense of the highest calibre.

Oh god yes this.

My uncle is a Catholic school teacher and frequently plays COD and L4D. He even talks about games with his students.

Hell, he bought me Fallout 2 when I was younger and also got me GTA3.

Now, why can't all christians be this easy going?

Thats the thing about religion, or people who spout religious quotes. They make people feel judged, and people dont like that. They would rather live their lives how they see fit not how someone else tells them they should live.

Religion told people how to live for a period of about 800 years, and it didn't work out so well.
