Like it's been said before, Avatar will not age well if it's only good on a giant screen and in 3-d. Truly good movies will be good even on a small screen/t.v. I can watch 'The Godfather', 'Unforgiven', 'The Crow' and several other films , (which I can't think of off the top of my head) on a tiny portable t.v. (even in black and white) and they'll still be good. In fact, some of my favorite movies I've only seen on relatively small televisions , the largest one being 26 or 28 inches.

True, we'll always have those timeless classics, but the truth of the matter is, times change, and if we have a new type of media floating around, why not exploit it?
Well deserved I say, Avatar was a pretty damn fine movie. Not the BEST by far, but it definitely was a sight to behold. I didn't see it in 3D unfortunately, but what I did see had me satisfied.
It was a good movie overall, if cliche, but I don't always expect a revolutionary masterpiece with everything. Of course, I didn't really follow the "hype" the movie had and just went to see it when it was out, so maybe I didn't have my expectations just right.
yes of course that is a main reason you plonker! People also only went to see Batman because of the Batman series before it. Plus of course it is a cameron film and he has made some pretty good films before so I would assume that people would think 'hmm this should be good if its from him'.
Personally I watched it because I thought it looked awsome. Is this a bad reason to see a film according to you? Perhaps I should have waited until there were a series of Avatar films and watched it because it had a long running successful franchise like Batman and Spiderman. Tell me, why did you watch the Dark Knight? Was it because you looked at your TV and went 'OMG, BaTmAN!!!'?
Well I could see this coming from a mile away. Avatar was good, but not that good. When people in the future look back at the highest grossing film ever and see that it was this, they'll be disappointed. But whatever...
Avatar was the worst movie ive seen in recent memory. I nearly walked out on the seen where the smurfs were trying to bring the female scientist back to life with their "dancing". The only reason why i didnt is because i wanted to see the final fight scene. (which was actually a good time.) The only decent character in the whole movie was the Colonel. HE WAS THE BAD GUY. district nine was such a better movie. all the characters just felt right. I feel bad that i spent money on this piece of shit film. Dances with smurfs is the only thing it can be called.
Though I feel Aliens had stronger character development, Terminator 2 still gets my attention nowadays, plot, character and special effects, all of it.

But if people based their intentions of seeing the new Batman movies on what Joel Schumacher had done to them, few people would have walked anywhere near the cinemas.

Er, yes? Obviously? The only point of visual effects is to support what should be an otherwise good film. Even if something looks astounding this doesn't mean its a great film - it needs the other components to hold it up.
I watched the Dark Knight because (in no particular order):
1) I like the character conflict between Batman and the Joker. Its a good story.
2) I think Christopher Nolan is an outstanding director (The Prestige, Memento, Batman Begins and even Insomnia was pretty good).
3) The following actors are, in no uncertain terms, fantastic: Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart & Christian Bale.
4) That promo picture of the Joker sitting in a jail cell.
nb I was barely even aware of Heath Ledger before the Dark Knight. He was good (but by nature muted) in Brokeback which was an excellent film. I was one of the people that wanted Mark Hamill to play the Joker.
What I don't like is a generic lecture on the evils of corporate exploitation of natural resources. That's fantastically boring. James Cameron has made some of the greats, specifically Aliens and Terminator 2. Both of those greats have are about messed up family units (Ripley, Hicks, Newt and Terminator, Sarah, John) battling a fantastic threat - and about all kinds of brilliant fears and themes (rape/pregnancy and fate/humanity). Avatar seems to be about how the environment is nice and companies not.
Importantly, these two franchise films (actually along with Dark Knight) don't require or are necessarily improved by, the previous films. I'll admit to watching T2 and Aliens maybe twice a year, Alien and Terminator I haven't seen in a good long while (hmmm, move night tonight I think).
And on the fact of looking good? I would argue that James Cameron spent a lot of money making his heroes look stupid (sparkling blue cat monkeys?). Compare:
Because the Dark Knight was the previous one? And that films that are, on any level other than CGI, pretty average. So for it to be the highest grossing film is a sad day for cinema.

This is a great day for furries!
OT: I never really cared for Titanic, but then again I don't care about romance movies in general. I want to see Avatar though.

The world of Pandora is easily the most fleshed-out fictional environment ever created for a film. The sheer level of detail in the movie makes Batman cry.
