I may actually consider renting this movie from the store and watching it with my brother next time he comes home. I never saw Avatar in theaters mostly because 3D makes me nauseous and I couldn't find a convenient showcasing of it in non-3D. I've learned quite a bit about the film and I don't think I will enjoy it, but I always prefer to have personally experienced the things I hate. I feel like it gives more justification for my feelings, even if I already know enough about the product for those feelings to be accurate. Plus knowing my brother he is going to want to mock the movie with me.
I have to wonder if people are still going to hold this movie in such a high regard without its fancy special effects.
I am curious as to what you learned about it that makes you think that you won't like it.*insert cop-out argument* Sure it isn't perfect, but then what is.
Either way, i hope you do enjoy it.
The villains are cliched, the protagonists are boring, and in general it seems like a movie that values spectacle over substance. In general I'm not a big fan of movies, but when I do watch them it's not for the computer generated visuals. So far, almost all of the praise I've hear about
Avatar has to do with how it looks. I don't hear any one talking about the specific characters and how they reacted to them. The most interesting thing in the movie is the planet itself. I'd much rather watch a documentary about Earth and be amazed by the real world rather than shiny computer graphics.
At least that is why I dislike it. Again, I haven't seen the movie so I could be wrong. But going off reviews I've read, opinions I've heard, and videos I've watched, I'm fairly confident that my assessment of the movie is justified.
Perhaps, and you may not like it, there is certainly a much greater chance of that if you go in with a negative attitude. Personally, i enjoyed it becasue i found teh characters likeable, the story well told and the feeling touching. I enjoyed the movie, a very VERY rare occurance for me, becasue it provided me with a Universe i could jump right into, an immersive and expansive experience. Yes, that was helped by some beautiful special effects, but to be honest, i think that that has become a cop out argument. People think that just becasue teh visuals are state of the art that the movie is automatically second rate in other departments. Yes, going in you know who the bad guy will be, yes, you know who teh good guys are and yes, the characters are not as fleshed out as some of the more complex ones. However, personally, i still found it to be my favourite movie of all time, and hope you will too. Worst comes to worst, heck, i can think of much worse ways to spend the money for rental.
BTW: if you are loking for a more positive review, maybe balance out the bad, watch movie Bob, he makes some good points.
I have watched the Movie Bob review. I've seen a lot of reviews for this movie, both good and bad. I wouldn't have decided that I will probably hate this movie if I hadn't.
And I disagree. I believe the argument that
Avatar is not a great film because it places it's special effects over character development is perfectly valid. There's nothing that says that you can't have a pretty movie and good characters, but
Avatar does fail to do this. It's not like this an uncommon occurrence. For example, plenty of video games rely heavily on the use of tropes, often poorly utilized, when crafting their story as they are diverting more attention to the graphics. Now this doesn't bother me to much because most of these games have their story take the backseat. This doesn't seem to be the case with
Avatar, and I'm not sure how it even could be since plot seems to be a far more important thing in movies. The story and all of its flaws are shoved in your face constantly and there really isn't a way to push them to the back of your mind and enjoy the pretty visuals, at least for me.
Though I suppose this is where my hate for
Avatar becomes personal. I absolute hate the characters in this movie. The villains appear to be your generic evil human business men, devoid of all emotion and just concerned about making a profit. Then you have the military full of idiots that only show joy in their mindless slaughter. The protagonists consist of the flawless Na'vi who live in perfect harmony with nature. I automatically dislike movies that portray humans as evil, especially when they are as one dimensional as they appear to be here. The inevitable comparison of humans to the flawless Na'vi only enhances this. Then the thing that really pisses me off are all the people who walk out of
Avatar thinking that the environment is so damn important and humans are evil.
That's my biggest problem with the movie, and I admit it's not really fair since the producers can't control how people respond to the movie. People start bitching about humans destroying the environment. They complain that we shouldn't tear apart the Earth and that all of those big evil corporations that do so are evil. This is because in
Avatar they make it look like the business men are the ones demanding the rape of Pandora. These people fail to realize that in reality the ones funding these corporations are them. We rape the Earth to fulfill the expanding needs of human society. People need to realize that all of our problems with the environment don't just come from the evil businesses. Everyone from producer to consumer is responsible for what is going on. Second,
Avatar makes people want to save the environment because its pretty, and that's the completely wrong reason to protect our world.
Sorry, this really turned into a big rant. I'll admit that my opinion on the movie may not be justified because I haven't actually seen the whole thing, and my biggest problem with the movie isn't actually something I should blame on the people that made it. But regardless this is why I dislike
Avatar and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't.
Avatar itself may not be a bad movie. Not necessarily a movie I would like but not a bad one. But I see no reason for it to be paraded around as this incredible film.
