As Yahtzee said
"A good sequel uses the first installment as a jumping off point for a new adventure"
"While a bad sequel merely wallows in the original like a hippo in a vat of liquidized children"
Can you name some sequels that fall into the second?
How about Halo 2? At the start, it appeared that this game would be part of the former, with MC taking the fight to Earth, but it suddenly reverts to the second the moment you step foot back on a Halo. Halo 3? Even more so, since it is merely a continuation of 2 because they ran out of time and money to finish 2 the way it was meant to be.
The Empire Strikes Back is an example of a sequel that uses the first film to jump off from, and begins a whole new adventure. Whereas a film like Pirates 3: At Worlds End is simply a continuation of Dead Man's Chest, rather than a new story.
This is becoming a problem, as more and more games and films seem to be giving us the "TO BE CONTINUED" kind of ending, like they are expecting a sequel to be made. But the problem here is that they are merely continuing the story from the fist game or film, and not starting afresh. You are pretty much paying twice for the same story becaue they didn't finish it the first time round.
So, can anyone else name some bad sequels?
