I would probably care more if you were gay and named Tony.
Also if your story began with a "The."

Anyway, no, I was never "goth."
I wore/wear black exclusively because I like the color, and I occasionally wear make up, but that's as close as I get.
I can't stand goth/emo people. They get on my nerves, but I do wear black shirts almost every day. It goes with everything and doesn't draw to much attention. But why do you wear make-up?
Congratulations on being open minded.

I also imagine the answer would be "because I want to, what difference does it make to you?"
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I was simply asking why he wears make-up. Max doesn't seem like the kind of person that would mask his natural appearance.

I'm just saying that there are better ways to express yourself rather than whining about everything or being moody and dressing like Edward Scissorhands.

Which shows you clearly have not bothered to read the rest of the posts in this thread. With the exception of the Edward Scissorhands look, you clearly know nothing about what Goth's are, or what they are like.

In relation to Max, well I can't say I know him, but then again that's my point, nobody knows what anybody else on the net is really like.

I'm a metalhead but i tend to wear gothy stuff. I just think it looks cool. Then I get shit from other metalheads for not being a purist (pathetic argument, i like lots of music so why should i choose one genre) and from goths ('You're not one of us! Don't wear that stuff'). There weren't many people like me at school so i stuck out quite a bit :(

I dress according to something a fashion design student told me once: "Black goes with everything. Wear everything black except for one item, and you're good.". I do enjoy Gothic art and Gothic architecture, but that kind of thing flies over the heads of most goth kids, and I've seen women dressed in gothic outfits who looked rather fetching (mm.. she was wearing those tall boots with laces going all along the leg, a layered skirt, a black puffy shirt with a corset, and had a hairpin with a black flower on it. All very low-profile and elegant. In contrast, those attention whores who wear those awful short skirts, disastrous fishnet thighs and atrocious make-up make me want to punch them in the face.), but the whole "goth scene" seems to me like a bunch of aimless teenagers looking for a group in which they can fit in. Most goth kids wouldn't recognize Notre-Dame if it hit them in the face, and wouldn't be able to tell apart a Gothic sculpture from a Renaissance one.

Oh, and stop it with the blackletter. ur doin it rong

Well, how am I supposed to have a discussion with you if you keep saying "X is why I'm right" and then in the next post you say "I told you not to take X literally"?

You say "I am just saying that the music is just as important as anything else" but you also said "If you wear black and like dark things but don't listen to Goth music you are not a Goth. If you listen to Goth but don't really like dark things in general and don't wear the clothing then you could still be considered one."

How is the fashion "just as important as" the music if you can be a goth just by being into the music and not being into "dark things in general" let alone "wear the clothing"?

But see, now you're adding another element: you're saying they are into the clothes AND the person "has no clue who 'Siouxsie And The Banshees' are or what a 'subculture' is." What about the fashion person who is aware of all that music, but prefers classical music and Rasputina and Dead Can Dance or something?

Also, when I say 'into the fashion' I don't just mean 'into the fashion and not the subculture' anymore than you are saying 'into the music and not the subculture' when you say 'into the music'.
I can see why I'm not making much sense, but that is pretty much what all old school Goth's will tell you. 'If you don't like the music, you are not a Goth'. The reason being is that they don't wish to be associated with all the depressed, black wearing teens who "nobody understands" and want to keep 'Goth' true to it's origins.

I guess the clothing isn't "just as important" in terms of whether you are a Goth or not. That was foolish wording on my part, what I was trying to convey is that clothing matters more than I implied it did with my comparison, but it isn't the defining characteristic.

If it was then technically speaking all these kids who wear black and eye-liner could be considered Goth even though their music and attitude is more like an Emo's. There has to be something that defines a Goth that means that everyone is not considered one.

Most people wear some black at times and plenty of people can have a 'dark' outlook on things, but it's only when you combine it with the music that it really makes them stand out from everyone else.

As for the two bands mentioned, I know plenty of Goth's who also like them and classical music has an important place with Goth's thanks to Johnny The Homicidal Maniac.

I tried to get into the punk stuff back in the day (2000's) but instead of being filled with people like in this,

It was just kids who liked to say "Fuck" alot, didn't have very intelligent views about anything, and couldn't explain why they had those views. Then emo happened in music, and I ran very far away. Became a prep, captain of the high school wrestling team, had girlfriends, went to university and became extremely sucessfull. While most of the "punks" from that time either ended up in jail/prison or emo.

Since, I've listened to Ska. I still think of it as my favorite genre. Here's a tidbit for you.

Excellent! Supernothing is my favorite song by Streetlight'.

Personally, I've always been a metalhead, so naturally I know a few goths. There's nothing wrong with being one. But I don't like being misslabeled. There's a big difference between metalhead and goth.

Yeah, I am pretty deluded, aren't I? You got me there. However, after visiting some goth website, I can safely say they aren't a very happy bunch.

Have a look at their poetry:

Yeah...
That poetry
Is dire
Sends my sliced mind
Ambling down avenues of unwise thought
As a lambent moon glares its rays of spite
Upon my brow
Furrowed
In confusion
And inexplicable lust.
Mordovniatha!

I was that way for my freshman year into halfway of my sophomore year. After that I brightened up my wardrobe a bit. I still retained my personality and taste in music/movies. I was never really "goth" or "emo" or really even anything. I didn't really fit into any actual clique and I had friends from all walks of popularity and so on. Most of my friends though consisted of nerds, punk kids, metal heads and stoners. Nowadays I have a few friends consisting of a mexican, some pastey IT ladies man, and a late twenty something year old who doesn't have much of anything going for him.

man, I used to wear a lovely long black coat (not leather, kinda thin fabric) that I used to wear to high school, but now I'm all about my biker jacket and steel toe capped boots. I guess not too much has changed.

music's been pretty consistent, though. after my Nirvana and Marilyn Manson phase, it was all about the black / death metal, and has stayed like that for a while. Not to say that Nirvana or Marilyn Manson are goth, but people just chuck bands at the word goth and hope they stick.

I think emo girls can be adorable in the right circumstances.
Also?
Because I like to.
I love eyeshadow.
That's cool, I just wanted to hear it straight from the horse's mouth.
