Satyricon, Primordial, Týr. And there three bands are mild successes. I know that Týr have played on Wacken, which is no small feat.

The British band Athlete wrote Wires, which is a very famous and popular song, but no-one I know seems to know any of their songs beyond that. Which is a shame, cause they have four albums and the two I own are both fantastic. Athlete are one of my favourite bands, yet no-one seems to be a fan of them. Quite a shame :/

As I don't really feel like looking through the whole thread, I dunno if they've been mentioned or not, but Foxy Shazam. Hailing from Cincinatti, they're a sort of glam rock band.

Solar Fields. He's an Electronic Downtempo/Ambient artist. Incidentally, he also made the music for Mirror's Edge. Below are a couple of his tracks.

Mirror's Edge: Heat (Ambience)

I've yet to meet another person in real life who knows who he is, and I've been listening to his music more or less since the game came out.
I haven't heard of him. But thanks to you, now I have. Good stuff!

I like Pretty Lights,
And I like you!

For me, my entire collection of music is a laundry list of bands and artists no one but me seems to have heard of outside of the internet. Except Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead, all I get are blank stares and raised eyebrows when I mention ANY artists on my playlists!

When you say "bands," I realize I listen to very few "bands," but to name an actual band I can't find any fans for IRL outside of a show, despite their popularity in this state, is STS9. Lotus, either.

For musical artists and producers in general, damn, the list is exhaustive. Only in the Denver area can I find people who love Pretty Lights like I do. Then there's... Shpongle. Bluetech. Entheogenic. Shulman. Big Gigantic. Motet. Thievery Corporation. Pnuma Trio. Mimosa. Emancipator. Glitch Mob. I could go on....but won't. I won't even get into the lack of electro/dance listeners in general around here. Let alone decent hip-hop... I swear I'm an island of musical taste unto myself here...

Yeah, not many people here in the US know Muse either. (where I live at least, lots of rednecks around here)

Anyone who follows me on twitter will have seen me raving about these girls. The Freza are my current favourite band, and, despite my pestering, they tell me they're not touring the UK too soon :(

Now stop reading this and listen to them!

Where I live basically every band I listen to. But in the Internet I haven't seen anyone mention this band, which is one of my favorite metalcore bands:

It's not really fair to list artists on a major label, as many of you have posted.

On-topic: Julius Eastman, Kazumoto Endo, Orthotonics, Scatter.

Most of the music I listen to would probably fit in this category, if we're defining "people" as "the United States in general" at least. Glancing through the bands others here have brought up leads me to one of two possible conclusions:
  • 1. A lot of people think bands are more obscure than they really are.
    or
    2. I know a lot of obscure bands, because I recognize a lot of those names.
Here are two bands that probably haven't come up (not going to pore over 6 pages to confirm that though) - Orphaned Land and Myrath. Huzzah for Oriental Folk Metal.

The band Hurt. Ive only met two other people whove ever heard of them. Theyre good and unknown. Even by those people who say i listen to everything.
I actually wrote a review [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.230423-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Hurt-Vol-1] of one of their albums here in the User Reviews section. Good band.

3. Maybe people living near the escapists posting aren't that bright. It could be true.

Wow. This thread is like the climax of the let-me-list-some-of-my-favorite-bands-that-you've-never-even-heard-about-because-you're-not-the-kind-of-music-lover-like-myself-now-let-me-smirk-and-tilt-my-head-slightly-upwards-as-I-assert-myself. And no one even cares what anyone has said. Sigh, EM just isn't what it used to be.

Although folk isn't really a big pull here in the corn belt so I suppose it could be expected.

I know. You know what else? The grass doesn't even seem as green anymore. The sky isn't as blue. Everything just isn't as good anymore. Because you're obviously the most sane person here. You don't have to come down from your hilltop estate to look at us lowly, dirty commoners, ya'know.

...And you didn't answer the question on the thread. You're not adding to the discussion.

That was a pretty good review i liked it. You described them really well. What do you think of Goodbye to the Machine? (out of curiosity)
