They actually got fairly popular after "Ain't no Rest for the Wicked" got put in Borderlands, but you're right, they're still not too well known.

Still, I think I've gotta go with this guy:

Avenged Sevenfold. Seriously. They are awesome, but I have yet to meet another person IRL that haven't thought they were crap.
I like Avenged Sevenfold, but there's only one other person in my whole school that's even heard of them.

Long Distance Calling are a band I never hear any praise for yet they are amazing.

A lot of the bands people have listed here though are actually well known/liked within their genre. Eluveitie, Hypocrisy, Amon Amarth and Insomnium I've all seen cited as underrated yet in the metal community they're massive, especially Amon. Anybody into melodic death has heard of them and most of them approve too from what I've seen.

Other bands would be Anvil, Nonpoint, and Fight.
Love Nonpoint, completely agree with you.

Mindless Self Indulgence (MSI) I feel they don't get the recognition they deserve.

They are starting to get slightly known, but Vanity Theft is probably my favorite non-popular band.

Would like to see Moon Duo get some more acclaim, they are a fairly new band. They had an awesome live show.

I always felt that The Cardigans got shafted somewhere... they are active for more than 15 years (that's longer than The Beatles), they should have been at the top for what they do, but they are still mostly ignored.

Its not that I dont like them, but I find them very... um... bland(?) in the sense that they like to call themselves Metal or have their CDs in the metal sections of CD sellers and really they're just hard rock (if that?). They're the Nickelback of their genre (I know, I can feel the hate, its oka. Its an opinion).

Besides, the only song I've ever heard someone honestly say they've heard from them is Nightmare. And thats just cause you can say fuckin' since its in the lyrics.

OT: I dont think Alice in Chains gets the respect it deserves. At least when its brought up in the comparison to Nirvana, and on the complexity within the band.

Other then that... Smashing Pumpkins, Incubus, um... I wanna say 30 seconds to mars, but its more cause they're "Kings and Queens" and "This is war" songs have been overused for movie trailers and tv spots recently, so they're getting the sell out rap.

Soundgarden too. I know, they used to be really big, but now, its hard to find someone who says they listen to Soundgarden with the same faithfulness that you hear people listen to say... Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, um.... Metallica, The Doors, The Who, the Rolling Stones, Avenged 7fold, etc.

I mean, Look at their music video for Black Hole Sun (and listen to the song as well)

How can you not think thats awesome (both song and video)?

Oh, you know who else doesnt come up in Conversations too much any more? Eric Clapton.

Seriously, arguing that Eric Clapton is underrated is like arguing that Jesus is underrated.

Also them.

Have you ever heard of Alien Ant Farm, Sevendust, or CKY? They all remind me of Nonpoint.

Well yeah, he is passed his prime and out of the spotlight since his son has died and he stopped taking heroin. But Eric Clapton is widely acknowledged to be one the most famous guitarists ever, and one of the best ever as well. Hardly underrated.

Mustasch is a great metal band that's not know anywhere but in Sweden.

are both great songs.
I love Mustasch and I'm in England, but yeah, there's not enough love for them 'round these parts.

I have to say, on the pantheon of godly rock bands, Thin Lizzy don't get their due. Also, Steel Panther get written off as a joke band but they're a bunch of talented blokes.

Well, this is talking about areas of where you live. Like here, Metal is alternative, so here, he's underrated (unless you talk to the older folks).

Not a fan of AAF, but I love Sevendust and CKY.

I feel CKY are pretty well known, Sevendust could do with having more people appreciating their awesomeness, though!

Of course, people with no hindsight or sense of musical culture whatsoever, or kids in general, wouldn't know Eric Clapton. That said, anyone with any basic culture knows who Eric Clapton is, either to laud him as God on Earth or attempt to argue that he is in fact overrrated (which, by definition, is the antithesis of being underrated).

Like I said, personal experiences.

Yeah, I didn't really like AAF's singer. Their cover of Smooth Criminal is excellent though.

CKY and Sevendust are more popular, but I thought I might as well tell you in case you hadn't heard of 'em.

Ever heard of Hot Action Cop?
