Battlefield 4 Singleplayer Campaign Details

EA games asks: "Are you Prepared 4 Battle?" *groan*

Cringeworthy tagline aside, EA games has provided a wealth of details on the story and characters in the singleplayer campaign of its upcoming next-gen shooter, Battlefield 4. In Battlefield 4, you take on the role of Sergeant Daniel Recker, member of an elite group of soldiers known as Tombstone squad. While on your way to collect information from a defecting Russian (who would have guessed?) General, your squad is discovered, and you have to fight your way through the Russian army.

Not content with featuring just the one stock-standard "Communist Bad Guy," the Chinese also get pissed about the US's implication in the assassination of some high ranking Chinese politician, so you'll have to go fight the red menace in Shanghai too.

After rescuing an informant from Shanghai, along with saving the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians (because that's just how Tombstone squad rolls), you'll be sent to Singapore to rendezvous with the USS Titan and the 7th US carrier group. But oh no! When you get there, the Battleships have been sunk, "and from this point on nothing is certain," teases EA.

EA also provides some high detailed renders of some of your squadmates: Clayton "Pac" Pakowski, a "Marine Combat Lifesaver," and Kimble "Irish" Graves, your Staff Sergeant. No details of any kind of animal companion were given.

DICE previously stated that the team will be spending more time on creating a good singleplayer story, assuring us that this time around, NPCs will be more human, and the campaign will have a much bigger impact.

Cue the endless bitching about games clearly not aimed at them.

Look, some people just want to shoot stuff. Be happy with the good games you get and try to get other developers to make the games you want. Bitching about this won't help any of you. People will still buy it. Take comfort in the good developers you do have.

That's my cue!

Pfft- Battleships in a modern warfare game? Idiots.

I keep telling 'em, they gotta take Battlefield back to the Second World War where it belongs. Ultimate location variety. Ultimate manual weaponry. Ultimate national diversity. Ultimate tactical and strategic significance.

The Ultimate videogame conflict. For Battlefield gameplay, at least.

I want a game with the communists being the good guys, indoctrinating the capitalist American pigs.

Well, aside from the part with the communists being the good guys, that's happening right now.

Battlefield single player: who gives a shit?

Talk about putting effort into an area of least interest. People play BF for the massive maps and combined arms multiplayer experience... not for another story about dudes with guns shooting other dudes with guns who speak a different language.

Bad Company was your best single player experience but at the same time the game would have been fine without it.

I meant that capitalist America is already being indoctrinated all over the place by communists, though I could never see as good guys or be willing to play as communists. I couldn't even play CoD: World At War's Russian campaign (before I realized I shouldn't be playing CoD in the first place) because based on people killed by ideology, the Nazis were pikers compared to the Soviets...even if their politics were actually closer than they were different.

Sooooo...

I'm just gonna sit in this corner with my laptop and my brand spanking new copy of Battlefield 2 I picked up for like $5 with all the DLC on Steam. Don't worry, keep making your "White people shoot other people because of reasons" single player, I'll be playing Battlefield the way it was always made to be played.

You know....
MULTIPLAYER.

...

Passive-Aggresive rant aside, I am sick of this. I actually am playing BF2 right now, and I am loving. This game was and still is my favourite FPS of all time. I even remember 6 years ago playing this my cousin, friend, dad and brother, all in the same house, having a blast.

Battlefield always has been an amazing multiplayer Combined Ops game. The bloody game intro highlights this. A car drives down and shoots some guys who then blow it up with a missile launcher who are then killed by a tank which is taken out by a helicopter which is taken out by a jet which is shot down by an AA vehicle and then the AA vehicle is blown up by a car which is then chased by a helicopter... Need I go on?

And that whole thing I just wrote above me? That really happens. In game. Yeah. The combined ops in BF2 is amazing and I just wish DICE and EA would stop trying to shove singleplayer into a multiplayer game. It's funny, because it always seems that people are complaining about the reverse, but it really is a multiplayer game.

They really put some effort in to making it sound as generic and clichéd as possible, didn't they? And I expect the other squad members will be Shooty McWhitestubble and Stubbles O'Shootywhite.

Oh wow. Battlefield 4's campaign. How exciting. Truly every Battlefield fan is hyped of the prospect of playing another high-quality single player campaign.

You know, at least when they have the evil enemy soldiers belonging to "Puppy Stompers Private Military Corporation" they aren't alienating an entire country full of people that may or may not want to play the game. At least when they have North Korea as the antagonists they aren't offending anyone cause they won't know the games exists anyway.

And when did China start becoming the knew punching bag for modern "realistic" shooters? I can (sorta) understand the Russian bit cause of the whole Cold War bullshit. But why China?

I... Wait, "Are you ready for battle?" is actually what they said? Plz tell me that was a joke. Also, why? I mean, the first one was just plain awful, and for this one they feel the need to tell you the story? "Hey you gonna go here and there and win" What's the point then? I remember BF 2 having no single player and doing pretty well.

Who are they aiming this towards? People who already play it care about the MP, and those that don't care about the MP (weird considering it's BF) don't want a dumb SP. So... who?

Question one. What kind of a last name is Recker? Christ, having a guy like that in the military is just asking for him to blow stuff up you don't want to see blown up.

Question two. What the Hell kind of a squad name is Tombstone? Why don't you just call it squad Dead Man Walking.

Question three. Why are we going with pissing off both Russians and the Chinese? What? Couldn't decide on who to be xenophobic towards? Remember in Modern Warfare 2 where it actually turned out that an American General was behind the whole thing? That wasn't perfect but it had SOME depth, more than, communists bad, shoot plox. I put up with this for awhile but I'm getting TIRED of it.

Question four. Why should I care? Does...does anyone even really buy Battlefield for the single player? Because I played the Battlefield 3 singleplayer, and dear god it was phoned in. If you want to actually make it good, then by all means try, but I ain't holding my breath, especially considering it's basically "We're fighting Russians and Chinese because we're unoriginal." I think I know why I preferred Halo over COD and Battlefield. Shooting giant aliens with energy swords and gravity hammers because they're trying to wipe our your race was a Hell of a lot more fun than shooting foreigners because because.

the SP in BF3 was just shoot and run. the story was forgettable. the MP on the other hand is fun and thats how i see this series.
this SP doesnt sound anything exciting or new. and i still remember on battlelog they asked "what are you most looking forward to in BF4?"
and over 90% voted for the MP.
but looks like they simply ignore it and still proceed by creating a pointless and forgettable campaign no one cares for.

at times i think by canceling my pre order for BF4 and just get black ops 2 instead. oh wait, lots of kiddis and campers. never mind.

There's nothing inherently wrong with featuring Russians/Chinese/Middle Eastern terrorists/Whatever as a game's antagonists.

Battlefield's choice of enemies for it's singleplayer campaign is the least of it's problems. Operation Flashpoint's enemies are renegade Russians, badshit insane omnicidal commander and all and it's one of the best singleplayer campaigns I've ever played. Considering Battlefield is a game about a big huge near future conflict, Chinese and Russians are a reasonable choice to show that.

Battlefield 4's campaign could feature Chinese and Russians and be the best damn thing ever. ...it won't, because there's a ton of other factors, like the boring level design, the excessive railroading, the extreme over reliance of scripted events, the 'move to waypoint then stand in this spot firing at the player until getting shot' AI which we can reasonably expect considering what we've seen so far, the suckery of BF3's campaign, and the devs not actually saying how they're going to do better, instead really only saying, 'we're gonna do better'.

Damn. Bad Company's campaigns weren't the best things in the world but at least you had some choice in how to play and the game didn't yank you away to listen to a bunch of boring bullshit every two seconds, and they weren't all super grimdark srs bisnis all the time.
How the hell did Battlefield 3 manage to be such a downgrade?
Whatever, I'm not expecting much from these guys in the singleplayer department after BF3.

DICE are just wasting money by spending millions on a single-player campaign that no one wants. They'd be better off saving that cash and investing it in a long-term plan to fix the hundreds of inevitable bugs and glitches that will plague the multiplayer part of BF4. Of course, given DICE's patch history, they'd most likely ignore the bugs and glitches anyway and end up emptying the cookie jar at their favorite strip club.

You have given me a brilliant idea: Base the main characters on the leads from Tropic Thunder! We'll have a nerd, an obese drug addict, a rapper and two very confused actors!

I don't really know how well that would work, but it would be nice to see something other than Generic Soldier(s) fighting Generic Adversary(s). Doubly so considering that generic enemy is so often based on a war that ended 20 years ago without a single direct conflict. If you really want me to fight the Russians, let me play from the perspective of Afghanistan.

Because the Soviet represents every communist ever existed?
The Soviet and communism have nothing in commune. Saying that the Soviet represents communism is like saying Hitler represents democracy as a whole because he got elected.
