So i've been reading some posts on people who have been talking about the games which have been the biggest let down, or ones that have not met expectations,

i was just wondering what game you've played recently that's surpassed your expectations?

For me it definately has to be BioShock for the Xbox 360.

It looked good, which is why i bought it, but it was such an atmospheric and brilliant game - i lost myself in it.

What about you?

Company of Heroes, played it at a friends and it seemed ok. Bought it for myself as the Gold Edition is very cheap, and it's the best RTS I've ever played...

Saints Row, it was A LOT better than I expected it to be.

COD 4, meh another modern shooter... what the... first person execution, nuke scene, fast paced escape from a sinking ship... AWESOME HAT!

Gears of War. Didn't expect it to play as well as it did, very fun.

For me it has to be Assassins Creed. I rented that game and almost 2 weeks past before I poped it in. After that I was really sucked in the game. It ultimately surpassed my expectations.

I think i kinda agree with all of those,

except COD4 - that game I really couldn't get into for some reason.

Persona 3: FES

Figuring if the original game was good enough to get a re-release several months later with some additions, it must be a damn good game, so I bought it with very high expectations.

I just cannot stop playing it, even as I write this all I'm thinking about is which social links to work on today and my next foray into Tartarus. So yeah, definitely exceeded my expectations.

Immortal Defense (I know, I know, I bring it up all the time).

I read on 'Play This Thing!' that the plot was as good as Planescape: Torment. I naturally played it loaded with skepticism, extra-critical eyes, and a general distaste for tower defense games.

I played it every free second I had because the game was like crack. And the plot lived up to the claims.

Mega Man X8. I had given up on the series after X4 (after seeing so many reviews), but I decided to check out X8 (out of complete boredom and there was nothing else at the video store.) and I have to say that it's one of the best experiences I had on the PS2.

I agree with Assassins Creed. Even though I had seen it get bad reviews, I found myself playing it thinking, this game is beautiful and atmospheric. After that I soon realised that it was extremely repetitive, but was surprised at how immersed I now was, despite its flaws.

Well, Halo 3, for starters. I'm not a huge Halo fan, and the only game in the series i've really loved is the original. However, after Halo 2, i had sufficiently low expectations to be pleasantly suprised by the third one.

Then we have Deus Ex. I didn't have an internet connection back then, so i hadn't even heard about the game until i bought it. A shining example of exactly how awesome the FPS/RPG hybrids can be. Let's hope that Deus Ex 3 will return to it's roots, rather than continue what Deus Ex 2: Invicible War started.

Then we have S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. I followed it for quite some time, and while i was expecting good game, i never expected it to be the most atmospheric title i've ever played.

Call of Cthulu - fps/horror game with no visual health meter.

Grim Fandango - played the demo when originally came out. bought it when released and couldn't stop playing.

Psychonaughts - funny, original and fantastic.

Grand Theft Auto 3 - knew nothing of it when bought. was amazed !

I have to say Burnout 2 for me, old game but a massive step up from the original and still one of my faveroute racers.

Crackdown, one of the first game si got for my 360 was a pleasent suprise, the sandbox with superpowers theme balanced out well.

I think honestly most games that people are expecting to be awful or just decent are a good deal better than we thought, wheras big budget games that we all expect and have standards for are let-downs due to a build up far too big for designers to deliver.

Probably would have to say Portal. Like Yahtzee, I was expecting an interesting puzzle game, but was taken aback by the writing and atmosphere of the game.

Soul Reaver. I still cannot believe I dismissed it as another goth vampire thing that wasn't really my thing.

I am avoiding all Resident Evil 5 - Dead Space - Fallout 3 - Dawn of War 2 - Prince of Persia 5 - and a lot of Metal Gear 4 hype (may be too late though), so that I can guarantee no disappointment!

Right now, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.

I was expecting a fun twiddly simcity-lite game.

I got ten pounds of grade A digital crack.
