Garry's Mod for the PC was supprisingly extremly fun i played since the gmod 9 came out and then bought Gmod 10 for the low price of 10.00$ in the mod for Hl2 you can do what ever you want have a war with zombies, put gman in emberasing poses, make strange contraptions that look like they would be in a twisted version of back to the future also, the downloadable content is great you can make your own or download already made ones ive downloaded nukes and 100s of weapons, vehicles, maps, NPCs, and other stuff

COD4: My first COD experience was the shit that was COD3, I figured it'd be more of the same except in a modern setting. Not even the rave reviews of my friends could convince me. I sat down and watched some single player... still not impressed. It wasn't till I played the multiplayer that I decided to buy. The single player turned out to be pretty good as well.

TF2: Was expecting more of TFC, which I didn't like.

Tales of Symphonia: Was expecting an average RPG. Was so much better though.

Bioshock: I bought it purely out of curiosity, I couldn't put it down.

COD4: I played COD3, and I'd seen my brothers playing COD2, so when 4 came out I was like "meh...." A buddy from work recommended it to me and I just got blown away (no "by a nuke?" jokes). I found it immersive, I was literally yelling at the screen "Hey assholes, I'm pinned down, back me up!" once I took on veteran.

Assassins Creed: Lots of bad rep on this one, but I still enjoyed it. I mean sure, gathering information was repetitive, but getting from point to point a la free running was refreshing as hell. Plus Altair is a badass.

Dead Rising: Given to me by a friend for my birthday, he said I'd like it. I hadn't bought it cause it didn't really seem like my kind of game. He was right, I was wrong.

Since 3 out of 4 of these games were recommendations from friends, the moral of the story is if a friend who knows you recommends something, go in with an open mind. Damn, even back in the day of N64, I overheard some friends talking about fishing in Ocarina of Time and I was like "Fishing? Oh, that sounds like fun! Can't do that in real life..." One of them lent me the game and a few days later I had to eat my words.

Maybe I just have low expectations in general....

Portal, Psychonauts, Rainbow Six Vegas 1, Bioshock, King Kong, Second Sight and the number 1 for me was The Darkness. I knew nothing of the comic and the cover looked mediocre. Yes you walk slow and there are other flaws but this is one of the few games that I've borrowed that I plan on buying despite having finished it, the other being Bioshock. Never has a game made me feel the degree of emotion that the Darkness has. Ever.

I am so glad someone else said portal. I was about to wonder if the gaming community had lost it's mind. Truly this was the greatest game I have had the privilege to play. There honestly hasn't been another game that pushed so far past what I expected of it. and Quote, "Portal's great and if you don't think so you must be stupid." - Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw

Dead Rising, albeit I've gotten slightly bored with it due to the *broken* save system.
The Darkness definitely due to it being the second option in a 2 for £18 range.
Halo 3, despite the fact that there was nothing special about it, in fact it was below average, my expectations were so low after Halo 1 that I expected utter crap (didn't play Halo 2).
Final Fantasy V, everyone said it was the worse but it's my favourite.

Morrowind.
I played it at a friend's house and my mission was "Go out into the wild and collect mushrooms" and I thought, what the hell is this? Got lost a hundred times, played for an hour, told him I didn't like it.
Then my roommate bought it and started playing it while I was rolling my eyes and wishing him good luck on his flowerhunt. A week of watching him play later, and I was addicted like a five year old to sugar.

I still haven't *actually* finished the game, though I have a bunch of characters who own half the continent.

Portal

I had no idea what the game was, it seemed really just a stupid way for Valve to say they had "5 games in one box" but man that game was great... great music, great dark comedy, great puzzles... (too easy, though)

Dead Rising

I hated this game, I bought it cause I love zombies and played it once and put it away. It was so awful when I started, but then recently I had a drought on my internet connection and decided to retry it. Put some more time into it and then that game just really opened up. After the learning curve, it becomes head-on exciting and there's so many options...

I agree with the above. I had no clue as to what Portal was going to be like, but guessed it would be a shitty puzzle game. I was surprised when it turned out to be a bloody fantastic puzzle game.

CoD 4 - not only did it break its WWII trend, it was also able to totally immerse me in its world.

Front Mission 4:
I fished this game out of a bargain bin, and fuck me sideways, I would have gladly paid new-release price for it.

Pokemon Diamond:
I bought this game thinking, "Hey, this should give me something to do on those long car trips." Never expected to be so completely absorbed.

"Brothers in Arms: The Road to Hill 30"
This game is my universal answer for everything. The combination of shooter and strategy is unparalleled. ALL the sound effects were absolutely astounding. The developers recorded the actual sounds of each gun used(every fps claims this, but this is the only I believe). Even the explosions had a perfect sound. The health system was awesome. Just a health bar, no med packs, no regeneration. Just an all-round great game.

YES. HOLY CRAP. I was expecting it to be like the other pokemon games, which it was to an extent, but there was just so much MORE to do after you beat the plot that I was completely absorbed into baking poffins, doing super contests, going further in the battle tournament, just .. what the hell happened here?

Also, to put in my own thought here ... The World Ends With You. I really didn't expect for the game to reach out of my DS screen and pull me into this race with the limit of seven days. JRPG gripers aside, this was just .. one hell of a great game. The surprises hit me like a mack truck and the battle system kept reinventing itself. The end of it just exceeded my expectations, and the thing that surprised me the most was how much I was LAUGHING at some truly ingenius dialogue. Just .. wow. Great, great game. :)

Kingdom Hearts 1 also did this when I played it for the first time. Really, really touched me. KH2 also touched me with Roxas' story and that sort of thing .. but yeah. Definitely TWEWY blew me away.

Persona 3: FES
Wholeheartedly agree.

I'd only heard of P3 from a few of my friends who had played it. They avidly described it as "the best RPG ever".

Skeptic, but expecting a good game nonetheless, I picked it up and took it home.

Twelve hours later, I realized it was five in the morning, and I hadn't looked away from my TV since I got home.

Oh, boy. That's a lot. I often buy games I have no idea of what they are, just because I need something new to play, and they're cheap, and some of them are true gems. Gothic 3 for example, I'd heard so much about it before, and (since I disagree with most people about newer games) I didn't think it'd live up to that. In fact, I thought it'd be awful. It wasn't though. Penumbra is another game I got at the same time, which I didn't know anything about, and it was awesome. Truly terrifying. (Until you get to the place with dogs everywhere it you just go "meh".) Genesis too, which I expected would be fun for a few hours playing skirmishes but had a really deep and involving story. Much more so than I expected at least, and you got to choose your responses, something I don't think I've ever seen in an rts, not that it affected much, just a little. The gameplay is quite fun too.

Oh... I'm rambling... Oh, well have fun reading this.

Mount and blade is another game like that, I saw it mentioned somewhere and tried the demo. Great game, so I purchased it. The thing about it though is that it's always improving. The difference between how it is now and how it was when I got it is like the difference between the first GTA and the last one. Except that Mount and Blade was awesome when it was like the first GTA and that it now is one of the best games out there. Lugaru too I got the same way, it seemed like it would be fun for five minutes, but it was much deeper than I thought, and the satisfaction every time you stab someone with a sword, kick them, watch them fall 200 feet and hear every bone crunch when they hit the ground is amazing. That your sword will drip blood as you walk towards your next foe is a nice detail as well, and that you can throw that enemy into a wall so hard you see the cracks on the wall...

Bloodlines must go here as well, I think. I expected it to be reall good, but when I actually played it through for the second time I realised just how much I'd missed. That game is truly a gem.

Mass Effect was far more immersive than I'd originally anticipated, and Viva Pinata certainly surpassed my expectations, but for me not by far enough. I enjoy playing it in short bursts of maybe 30 mins-1 hour, but it's just not really challenging/fun enough for me to get really involved in it.
