Very odd law. Personaly im glad im not living in japan, id definately have to pay that tax - and frankly if some one told me i have to pay a tax because of my genectic's Id tell em where they could stick it. I have a feeling that many others will feel the same if this story is actualy true.

85 cm isnt much even for an average japanese guy so it seems to me the numbers are off at the very least.

Foolish. People are different heights and thus different builds. Sliding scale depending on height>>>Set figures across the board.
I agree, it'd be more logical for them to go with BMI or something if they have to regulate it.

I just measured my waist for comparison, and I'm at 70 cm. And I'm so thin that the doctors scold me every time I'm doing a health checkup because I don't eat enough.
Doesn't BMI generally fail to account for musclemass?
The body mass index is one of the biggest examples of widely accepted pseudo-science in the history of medicine-I'm amazed that qualified doctors still pay attention to it-its an appalling example of arbitrary nonsense. I'd encourage anyone to pay no attention to it whatsoever, I mean, just have a look at the thinking behind it...

it's a different country, they do things differently. i don't agree with it, as there is the possibility that you can't get skinny enough to satisfy them through some deformality or something, but i wouldn't go as far as to call this evil.

Ths thread made me laugh and I haven't read the article yet but the first image it gave me was a fat guy being dragged out his house by a SWAT team with half of a hoagie still in his mouth
OK now I'll read the article so I can give some informed input
I don't know seems a little...facist
OK I guess thats a little extreme but still I guess they don't want to end up like America which really annoys me because every nation has fat people yet only we're poked fun of for it due to statitics and where I live I don't see any fat people you know if Texas seceeded from America then the obesity rate would take a nosedive

If you read the article, I think the law is for people over age 40, I think. It is supposed to reduce medical costs in an aging nation.

Still, that is completely crazy, and horrible for peoples self esteem.

I demand a source or it never happened.

In other news, I heard Bobby 'Don't Worry be Happy' McFarrin killed himself. This, of course, didn't explain his appearance on the Tonight Show the next night, or how that rumor pops up ever year or so.

Next thing you'll tell me Jeff Goldblum died.

It just seems like a tax that will only increase the overall rich/poor divide.
You know what's an awesome way for people to lose weight? Jogging. Guess what it costs you? A kick in the arse out the doorway, that's what.
It costs you time.

Are you in school and/or living at home?

Are you under 25?

If you answered yes to either question then stop talking. When you work 50+ hours a week, need to pay rent/a mortgage and no longer have a youthful metabolism supporting you THEN you can comment about weight problems.

Oh, those crazy Japanese. In all seriousness, though, it's a pretty good idea. People are too stupid to eat healthy, so the government has to step in. If only America could implement a policy like that... Oh, who am I kidding, there'd probably be an armed rebellion (that is, if those lazy fatasses would get off of their couches).

This is the best idea I've heard in a while. From what I remember, there was an ad campaign here in Australia not too long ago with a little girl measuring her mum and dad's waistlines. She got all worried when her dad went over about 90cm, then a voiceover announced that being fat over a certain measurement means your risk of having heart problems increases quite a bit.

Obviously there would be allowances for genetic conditions that either give you a wider bone structure or increase your natural fat storage, but things such as the latter can be easily controlled. It's about willpower, and I believe there is never any reason to be overweight, especially not obese.

Lol good!

We should adopt that in America for a year... somebody call Obama.
indeed we should. also why are the females allowed to be fatter? And do pregnant women have to obey this law?

Probably becaue it makes their boobs bigger......?

No, women already have wider hips and waists to begin with anyways.
which begs the question. if ones pelvic structure is too large to physically allow such a waistline are they exempt or do they have to undergo re constructive surgery. personally I think the media are making up laws again. like they did with that "curvy cucumbers" ban
You're talking about Japenese people though, they aren't known for having a massive size.

Banning vice is a terrible idea. Trying to curb the reasons people turn to vice is an infinitely less expensive and more sound one.

Considering the ilium of the pelvic girdle tends to be a fair bit more flaired for women than for men, it seems to make sense.

That's hilarious.
I suppose they had to make sure it was still possible to cram tons of people in a train somehow.

I suppose it's a bit overzealous, but I can't really say it's anything but comedy to me.
They're japanese. they can design, build, test and manufacture trains in a blink. They just replace them. also JUST 80 MORE

Well, I'm against any government intrusion on peoples lives, but thats hilarious.

Wait, what? That accounts for 101% of the population.
