Fallout - Back in the day where you could still rent games at the library, I rented one every week to see if there was anything good. I turned in Fallout three weeks late, got a massive fine, but I couldn't stop smiling.

Homeworld - "Huh, a space game. Wonder if it's like TIE fighter. Let's check this out." Nine hours later, I was telling myself to get something to eat...after wiping out that enemy fleet.

I may be alone here but I loved Cold Fear on the Xbox. I love survival horror and thought it looked pretty good so I just bought it. I'd never even heard of it before. It made me happy!

oh mine is easy. i picked up splinter cell, the original for the pc when i had no idea what a stealth shooter was. instantly fell in love and proceeded to pick up every Splinter cell released since them. it has gone on to become one of my favorite genres.
Exactly the same has happened for me, great series, can't wait for Conviction

For me it was Xenosaga. Never heard a word whatsoever either. I love the first one so much, it was definetely in my eyes back then as something quite different than the usual RPGs that come through and it has such an amazing story and stunning cinematics. The second was good but felt as though it was hurried into production and the battles at times seemed relentless with the new combat interface especially when facing bosses.Second to last boss was a nightmare......have to face twice in a row.....can kill you out of turn....*shudder*. The third one (And unfortunately the last one) was well done for a finisher despite the glaring final plot hole of what happens next. I am sad no more will be made but I feel satisfied for now. Xenosaga is a great game for RPG lovers.

Diablo, my brother bought it for me. He just thought the name sounded cool..

Blade runner, as someone said. I borrowed it from a friend who thought it was a stupid game, I still remember most of it. The atmosphere really pulled you in.

I got Midtown Madness 3 when I bought my Xbox...got to be one of the games I've spent the longest time on, ignoring multiplayer. Spent DAYS on that thing.

Starcraft: I got this gem when I was 13. As a young boy, my dad showed me Warcraft 2, and I loved it. A couple years later, I found out they had made a Warcraft 3, and ran out to buy it. When I got to the game store (can't remember what it was called) I bought it, but saw another game that said "From the makers of Warcraft" and I thought, "Well, why the hell not?"

Chrono Trigger. I'm European, so over here nobody knew about that game and I just happened to find an imported copy from the US.

Until the internet became mainstream and everyone was using it, I had never met a living soul who had played that game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3

I'd remembered playing Persona 2 when I was much younger and couldn't find it ever again, so I grabbed Persona 3 thinking "well, it's a JRPG. We'll see how I like it." Mind you, I didn't buy it till recently. I get to check games out from work, like free rentals. So I wasn't taking any risk at all by picking it up. But it was so fantastic that I bought it when I traded in my DS.

MAME:
Back when I had a crappy dial up modem is when I found out about this. Now I had every damn arcade game ever at my finger tips. But I finally got to play Xenophobe much as I wanted and it worked with my Wingman joystick! It's always a nice trip down memory lane for me.

Abandonware:
I was looking for Xcom online and found an abandon ware site that had all the old games I wanted to play back when I was too poor to have a decent computer. Plus DOSBox was a nice utility.

My parents had taken me to get a PSP, but at the last minute, cancelled. So, to make up for it, they let me get some games, and I got some terrible racing game, POP:WW, and after looking at the bargain bin, I found a nice little game about a kid with fucked up shoes, and massive key, and Disney characters... yeh, it was Kingdom Hearts. Not a bad buy for $AUD17.00, and loved it ever since. Hell, I went to EB the first day KH2 came out in Australia, just 'cos I couldn't wait.

either "sword of the berserk: guts rage" or else marvel vs. capcom 2, both i picked up on a whim. with guts rage being purchased on the box art being freaking sweet. i've played sword of the berserk more fervently but marvel vs capcom i still own and really enjoy it i just love that everyone wishes they owned this game but can't unless they drop 80$
