Worst: I found the romance with Zevran in Dragon Age to be kinda awful, but maybe that's because I didn't really like him overall.

Best: (Might get burned for this but I'll say it) Not really an "official" couple in the sense that they say I love you, but I dare anyone to deny that Fang and Vanille don't have SOMETHING going on there. They clearly love each other, they don't act like friends, even best friends do they act like lovers and that's always how I've thought of them. Their devotion to each each other is pretty touching.

Oh and I'll also mention Garrus and FemShep. I love me some Garrus. Such a well done romance.

Lui Kang and Kitana in Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, they meet eachother like twice...but are in love by the end of the game. :|

That's my worst but I'm not sure of the best!

Worst: Super Mario series.

I mean, if he was in love, he would have gotten far more annoyed when he went to the wrong castle...

Best: Little Big Adventure.

Twinsen and Zoe.

Silent Hill 2 got it down perfect. Just look at the premise: A lonley man loses his wife to a terminal illness, but recieves a letter from her 3 years later. All the conversations/letters from Mary in that game were extremely sad and well done, not unlike the rest of the game when it wasn't being horrifying.

Definite worst: F.E.A.R. 2. In my oppinion, F.E.A.R.2 never happened. Let's just leave it at that.

Ico and Yorda, a perfect romance... if i do say so myself
QTF

It's one of the most well done romance in gaming and there is almost no dialog.

Worst ? probably the one from Timeshift.

Is it okay if I admit FF10's romance annoyed me? I just found the whole thing a little cheezy to say the least. I much preferred the romance development in all the games prior to 10 :(
I agree with this. 10's was one of the worst FF romances ever.
Final Fantasy X is just one of the worst things ever.
Indeed. At least X-2 had a few entertaining bits and fun gameplay, X only really had Auron.

Anyway, worst: Tidus and Yuna, I can't even believe I forced myself through that game, and the 'relationship' between them made me want to beat my head against a wall.

Best: Thane and FemShep. As much as I love Garrus, the romance between him and Shepard just felt... horribly rushed, half-done, just a bit of a let-down. Thane's actually had some emotion in there. But they both beat out the first game, and aside from HL2, I haven't played any games that really involved 'romance'. That, or I've just blocked them from memory.

Wait, no, I forgot FFXII. Vaan and Penelo were just... meh, but I really enjoyed Balthier and Fran, whatever the exact nature of that was.

Worst: Fable 2

Best: Totally Solid Snake and the box...those two have been together through so much and, no matter what, in each and every game, they always pull through the mission together. It's the most heartwarming romance i've ever seen in the industry, i just wish box got a bit more cutscene time though...

....why are you all staring at me like that?

Best? I have a soft spot for Zidane and Garnet, and not just because I'm replaying FFIX right now and getting totally nostalgic. I just like the development of their relationship. And it manages to be really funny too. There are definitely other games that have pulled this progression off, and probably done it better too, but my memory sucks right now, and this is the only one I can think of. It's also the one of the only Final Fantasy romances that didn't annoy me, or that I didn't consciously choose to ignore (I don't care what anyone says; nobody had a romance in FFVII...Except Cid and Shera...)

Worst? Aside from several of those already mentioned...I love the game, but did anyone else find the Ethan/Madison hooking up scene in Heavy Rain utterly laughable and cliched? I mean, I individually like both of the characters, and I like the concept of them together, but the execution was pretty lol-worthy. I don't know, I guess it's unfair to call it the worst, but, again, it's just the only one coming to mind that hasn't been brought up.

I also thought that Garrus and Shepard was done award-winningly well. They made him look so sweet, sincere and caring, a nice contrast to the amazing bad-ass we see him as anywhere else in the game. I'm gonna be one of the few fanboys for this game and say Dante's Inferno. Dante pours his entire life and goes through Hell (literally) to save his love, Beatrice. He never once questions her, even though she basically sold her soul to the devil because Dante cheated on her. His love for her causes him to admit to all of the sins he's ever done, and eventually redeem the both of them.

I'm surprised the Prince and Farah hasn't turned up yet. I can't say it altogether appealed to me, but it was the most believable and closest to affecting (at least closest to affecting me) I've probably seen.
Was scrolling through the thread, the long wait for the Prince and Farah surprised me as well, sadly.

As for worst, I'd say inFamous. It's terribly done. They pretty much said "This is your girlfriend. She is a nurse and therefore a good person. You love her. You would do anything for her" and you have to roll with it. Then it's followed by moral choices, yadda yadda yadda.
The entire 'relationship' has zero credibility when playing it on evil karma, really.

Best:
Bayonetta and Luka from Bayonetta.
Trip and Monkey from Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.
Farah and Prince from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

All of these because the romances were hinted at, but it wasn't played out in front of the camera, shoving it in the player's face. The affection is quite obviously there, they obviously care about each other, but the relationship is never fully realised. Enslaved, especially, created a beautiful tender relationship between Trip and Monkey. Stunning game.

Worst:
Fable 3 - You shouldn't have to feel obliged to have to have a romance/marriage with a character when no real relationship has been put in place. You see Elise or Eric (I think that's his name?) TWICE before choosing to marry them, none of their past relationship really having been explained.
Now, if they'd brought Lady Grey back...yes, I married her in Fable 2, so technically, yes, it would be incest, but she was hot, so...anything goes.

Prince of Persia (2008) - The Prince and Elika relationship was so bloody forced. Sacrificing the world to save a character without any semblance of a personality...totally unbelievable.

I'm going to cheat. Obviously, any romances that you control have the most attachment for me. So the best for me is Naoto and mine from Persona 4.
Worst is Thoma and anybody from Gen. 3 in Record of Agarest War. Why anyone would fall for Thoma is beyond me.

Best? Persona 3 Portable, between your female protagonist and the badass guy I can't recall the name to right now but wasn't Akihiko.

Worst? Final Fantasy VIII. It wasn't romance, it was torture.

Fable 3. Im sorry that girl at the start. The kiss just seems... to "Stiff"? If thats even appropriate to say. It seem'd to unreal. Like hey... the game just started... kiss this girl and get emotionally attached in 10 mins then we will decided her fate. She also hates you for this. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH...

Then I slam the door in the face of fable three and put in the window "FAIL"

Thats the worst. I can't think of a good one.
Worst is all romance in all fable games.
Protagonist: I can fart and burp louder than any in the land!
All towns people: MARRY ME!!!

Best: Bastila in KOTOR

Best = Garrus and Shepard
100% agreed! I really liked their dynamics. Theirs was the only romance in ME2 that actually tugged at my heartstrings.

Most video game romances rub me the wrong way. I suppose I can single out the Final Fantasy series as my personal worst because in my experience the characters and their interactions always betray my suspension of disbelief.

Best: Coming down to person preference here I'd say Ashley and Shepard in Mass Effect. If only for the fact that I actually genuienly grew an attachment to the character, enough that I was deeply upset by her almost complete non existence in Mass Effect 2.
But hey, that does allow for potential for a 'star crossed lovers' kind of situation, so that's something.
As a side note, I liked Jack's romance scene from Mass Effect 2 as well.

Worst: I'm tempted to be a dick and shout TALI ROMANCE but I'm not going to. Partly because I have friends who like Tali to whom I want to keep my good standing with and partly because even though the Tali romance didn't much appeal to me, it can't be nearly as bad as the 'Marriage' aspect in the Fable games.
It's really true, how anyone could ever seriously develop a fondness for just ONE random NPC is beyond me. They are all identical. Same lines of dialogue, there's like five different voice actors, and they all respond to the exact same things the exact same way. Marrying them serves no purpose to story or gameplay save for that you have to give them money for a dowry that you'd probably much rather have for yourself.
There's no benefit to doing it, because if you don't feel anything for them (which I am positive barely anyone does) all this means is you flirted a bit, got married and now have to go and visit a pointless NPC every ten minutes in order to keep them happy, which again, serves no purpose.
The random Covenant Grunts in a round of Halo: Reach Firefight have more personality and individuality then the entire population of Albion. Pity that game didn't let me marry a Grunt.
