can't think of a good romance in gaming but I can think of one of the worst:
the force unleashed 2
I think Yahtzee (zero punctuation) pretty much summarized it for me.

Bring on the tomatoes, but I actually liked
Otacon & Naomi in MGS4 before she turned into a total ***** and later offed herself RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM.

Best? It's pretty hard to think of one since there's several...

Worst? Bioware romances.

What? *Click these specific dialogs and you win romance* Give me a break. That's not romance. That's an achievement and a possible replayability factor.

Best: Farah and the Prince. SANDS OF TIME ONLY. None of that namby pamby bullshit from Two Thrones.

Second Best: Shadow of the Colossus. Wander was willing to destroy the world for the life of one, losing his own innocence to save hers.

Worst: Force Unleashed 2. Good god what a mess.

The best I'd have to say Ico and Yorda, or Wander and his unconscious girlfriend.

The worst? I don't think I have enough space to type all that out, so I will just say most romance in games.

Can I say "in before Dom and his wife"? Please?
On the other hand, the clear romance between Dom and Marcus was executed really well.
I believe the term you were looking for was bromance which can be shifted to the adjective form bromantic. For example "There was too much bromantic tension between Marcus and Dom while not enough
'not shooting your wife out of pity/love'
between Dom and Maria".

Oh, another bad one: Jak and Kiera was pretty awful.
Not because they were bad in Jak 2, that was fine. But then Ashelin and Jak are suddenly hitched up in Jak 3, when Ashelin had the hots for Torn.

And then if that wasn't bad enough, The New Frontier put Jak back with Keira and barely acknowledged the other games at all.

One big clusterfuck of a romance. The only worthwhile one was Daxter and Tess for being so damn funny.

Valkyria Chronicles: Welkin and Alicia
Wow, I didn't expect that one to show up as a best honestly. To each their own and all.Personally, I was laughing through most of that game's "romantic" scenes or calling Welkin a dumbass or groaning in agony. But then again I have a problem with most JRPGs romantic scenes because they always fill it with 12 year old ackwardness with characters who spout cheesy lines and have no idea how to express their feelings otherwise. I honestly think it is impossible for a JRPG to have a conversation concerning romance that isn't naive and/or totally cliche.

I am not attacking your choice there though, just take it with a grain of salt. I am sure alot of people enjoy that very aspect about JRPGs. But I would crap my pants if I ever saw a more mature notion of love addressed in a JRPG game. Without the *giggle* complexes.

P.S. This thread has made me happy I never got into Gears of War.

Most romances in games are bad. That's because they hover somewhere between soap operas and late night Cinemax flicks in terms of writing quality (for the most part). Some developers have writers who know what the hell they're doing. For that reason, my OTP is Gordon/Alyx. <3

Best?

Samara in Mass Effect 2. Call me sappy, but I love a doomed romance if executed properly.

Worst?

Tali in Mass Effect 2. Shoehorned hero worship doesn't agree with me. Meer's creepy delivery of allegedly affectionate lines doesn't help.

Best.. would probably be Mass Effect. But to be fair, I really can't think of any that actually looks "real" or whatever.

Worst has got to be KotOR. I didn't pick up on the Bastila-romance at all until very late in the game, and never truly understood what was going on until the "I love you"-stuff right at the end of the game. That really was a "wait, what just happened?"-moment for me.

Best? probably one of the ones from Mass Effect 2... I liked Thane's the best...<.<

Worst? Persona 4... here's all it is...

"Hey you wanna be my girlfriend?"
"D'okay."

...that's about it... but it has no build up and just feels completely shoe horned in, not to mention the fact that doesn't affect anything not even the occasional dialogue... it can hardly be called a romantic subplot...<.<

Best? Jahiera and Kate McReary.
Jahiera's husband had been tortured and murdered by the main antagonist and she needed a shoulder to learn on. You could take advantage of that to get funky fresh tonight, or you could form a romantic bond that would last a whole game and two expansions. On that note, Aerie is also a solid choice.

Kate McReary wasn't pretty, but she was interesting. Instead of picking affectionate dialogue from wheels to be rewarded with some sideboob, (Mass Effect) you advanced the relationship by spending time with her, akin to the Jahiera romance.

WORST? Elika and the Prince. Just please, don't go there. That game was a repetitive sham with a beautiful art style and boring mechanics. Elika was an emo ***** with an hourglass frame.

Dragon Age's Morrigan was definitely the most memorable for me... made the story and my choices much more personal and difficult to say the least.

Worst would be my Fable 3 character's marriage with Elise. He rescued her at least twice and knew her intimately for years, before spending a good portion of the kingdom's treasury on a lavish royal wedding in view of all his subjects. After the fateful kiss, but before the crowd dispersed, my Hero drew his musket and shot her in the face at point blank range.
(It's good to be the king, and therefore not subject to punishments for such petty crimes as murder)

Best has got to be Anju and Kafei from Majora's Mask. I always felt sad when I failed to bring the two together...

The best romance in a game was definitly between Nameless Marine and his guns. You could just see the happy look on his face when he saw Shotgun for the first time, and you could feel the tension between him and Shotgun once he found out about God mode and Chainsaw.
Bwahahahahah!

Because I only have one game that even does it correctly to work with, I'm just going to pick the specific parts of it.

Final Fantasy VIII. Most romance in video games, especially JRPGs, (and especially those with voice acting) tends to be portrayed as a series of random grunts, giggles, blushing, repeating each other's names with the elipses tagged on the end, etc. FFVIII, for at least a few scenes, shows the genuine kind of connection that a couple makes through simple dialogue and revelations about the characters to each other. Namely, the scene on the Ragnarok*. It displays the character's differences, and also what brings them together.

We're also shown Squall's torment over Rinoa. In his various scenes of solitary character development, Squall constantly thinks about her.

The hurricane of adoration, intra-and interpersonal torment, obsession, longing, and each other emotion that makes up love as a whole is portrayed pretty well. However, our female lead, Rinoa, lacks a bit of character development, thus making her a bit too mysterious, (although that can work, and FFVIII does use it somewhat to it's advantage: love can strike at any time, at any person) and why exactly she finds Squall so endearing is never really revealed, although it's safe to say that, like many women, she found him tall, dark, and handsome.

So, basically, FFVIII only really fails to show a double-sided romance. However, I still find it the most endearing and most empathetic romance I've yet seen.

*Fuck you, I liked "Eyes on Me". The lyrics aren't bad, and it's really only the arrangement of the music itself that should make it feel overbearing at all.
Hear hear! FF8 is to date one of my absolute favorite games of all time. (the rest of the FFs I find rather meh.)

OT: I find the whole Tali dialogue in ME2 to be full of love. An earlier candidate is Jaheiras loss of her husband in the start of BG2. Pretty heart wrenching in my opinion.

Worst...hum there are a lot to choose from...the love scenes in Dragon age are pretty damn awful, but straight up bad writing...I'll have to think about it :p

For srs. Only a romantically impaired blockhead like Sora would go and defeat not one, but TWO universe-threatening forces to reunite with his love interest, and, when finally together again, think "for this, I shall shake your hand".
I know, right? :p
I mean, I get that it's Disney but... can they no longer even have kissing in their films or games anymore? >>
I think this has more to do with Square Enix and Japan in general.

Watch any anime rom com and the only pay-off you get in the end is the boy and girl eating ice cream together or holding hands. You hardly ever see anyone in an anime or Japanese game seriously snog to consummate their love.

Best romance: The Prince and Farah from Sands of Time.

Worst Romance: Bioware romances.

Worst: Recently played Alan Wake. Despite a game being about him trying to find his wife, the few scenes of dialogue between them seemed kind of cheesy and didn't feel as there was much if any chemistry between the two at all. Maybe it was the voice acting, but it just didn't seem all that believable to me.

Best: Cloud & Tifa - FFVII, KH2
