FLCL. And I only say so because no one has made a Yotsuba& anime yet.
Monster gets pretty high up the list. I'm yet to see an anime that blows my mind though. Maybe in time.

Hokuto no Ken, also known as Fist of the North Star, though I'd avoid the English dubbed version like the plague. It's from the 80's, when dubbing was... sub-par, to say the least. The movie is... eh, the anime is amazing, the manga is better, the OVA trilogy is great, the alternating Movie-OVA-Movie-OVA-Movie series is great, the side stories are fun as all hell, and the prequel (Souten no Ken or [/i]Fist of the Blue Sky[/i]) is fun as well.

A lot of Action/Shounen anime/manga cliche's originate in Hokuto no Ken, actually.

I have lots of friends who like anime and constantly recommend them to me claiming that "this one is different, I think you would really like it." So far the only one I've liked is Samurai Champloo. It's short, every episode has a coherent beginning, middle, and end, fight scenes are fast paced and don't have any of that "he's dead! now he's alive! He's too strong and I can't even hurt him! Now for some reason I'm able to do some super attack that can kill him! Let's talk about every attack I do for 15 minutes apiece so that a short fight can span 4 episodes!" stuff. The voice acting is good, which is EXTREMELY rare for anime, Mugen is a badass character, and it doesn't fall victim any majorly deal breaking anime cliches. So NOW I would say Samurai Champloo. Dragonball Z used to be my favorite show as a kid though.

Darker than black and Soul eater are pretty cool. Even I who I am a hardcore anime hater cant stop watching them :p
But Soul Eater's an incredibly generic show. Perhaps you don't hate it as much as you think you do.
I havent watched a lot of episodes but to my mind it is like naruto only a bit better and funnier. You cant compare it to Darker than black though..

It's a generic shonen action series.

Try this: http://www.hulu.com/baccano for some truly unique stuff.
Hulu doesn't stream outside of the US and watching 2 animes is already too much for me.

There is none because they all get ruined by the yaoi drawers/writers. Seriously, can you look at Vegeta the same way after you find out some girl was more concerned with who's dick he'll suck then who he'll fight?

Well, my current top 5 are:

- Deathnote
- Higurashi no naku Koro ni
- Hellsing Ultimate OVA
- Code Geass
- Yu-Gi-Oh

It's mostly rather dark anime really. I have plenty of others I'd like to put there, but I felt like I should limit myself to 5.

I'm no massive fan, but I enjoyed Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Gundam Wing, etc. Nothing has topped Death Note for me, though. I watched every episode in the space of about 5 days; I simply couldn't put the damn thing down.

I refuse to pick one! There is no best, they all have flaws.

I was so bored I stopped watching after 3 episodes.
Your loss, not a flaw on its part that you didnt get it.

Pacing.
Explain?
It's not my fault I was bored I didn't watch this to just to get bored on purpose. This wasn't cause I couldn't understand it. The plot was fairly simple. A show which doesn't keep me interested has a clear flaw.

This is all about opinions and I really get fed up of fan boys demanding that their opinion rules over everyone else on a topic left up to opinion. Some people enjoy war documentaries while others find it boring no mater how much your grand-dad tries to prove you otherwise.
