Chris Wolstenholme of Muse, because I love all of his riffs. His bass is very solid, and helps make up for the fact that there is no rhythm guitar in the band.

This is my favorite bassist of course, for my favorite band. There is no such thing as the best bassist of all time. Everyone has different styles.

^John Entwistle rules.

You should then hear: Metallica - (Anethesia)Pulling Teeth
3-4 min bass solo by Cliff Burton :)
That song has best bass line that I heard of, in my opinion Cliff Burton is one of the best bassist ever. It's really shame that he died.
Also Serbian band "Popecitelji" has some great bass sections, look it up on youtube.

John Myung of Dream Theater.
THISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHISTHIS.
People who do not know this band and this bassist need to know this band and this bassist.
Victor Wooten is also amazing, same with Les Claypool.
I feel sorry for anyone that hasn't heard of Dream Theater.

I disagree.

I think someones favorite and the best are two different things.

I'm going to agree with Geddy Lee as the best rock bassist with Steve DiGiorgio coming at a close second

I also like Steve Harris, and D. D. Verni.

For non-rock, I really like Victory Wooten.

Oh, and to those Anesthesia fans, it's a filler track. A complete waste of time. Cliff Burton is the most overrated bassist of all time. He's good, but not great in any sense.

Cliff Burton followed by Flea

Cliff Burton was an amazing bassist and he pretty much wrote all the music behind Metallica's early stuff, thus greatly influencing thrash metal

Myung, Claypool, and Flea, not in any order, but they're some of the best I've ever heard. Depends what you mean by best.

Brian Gibson of Lightning Bolt, unless a bass with 3 bass strings and 2 banjo strings tuned like a cello doesn't count.

They're probably some jazz guy out there who's better than him anyway. Come to think of it there's ALWAYS some jazz guy out there who's better at playing instruments.

I'll just end this thread right here and say Geddy Lee from Rush. Les Claypool of Primus is an obvious and well deserved second place though.
QFT

Watch Rush in Rio and tell me this isn't true.

Do it.

Hands down flea. I mean he plays it naked, who else does?

Disclaimer: "who else does?" is un-substantiated, neither is it a challenge or a reason to take pictures of yourself playing the bass guitar naked to prove me wrong.

Why are there so many threads about bassists? Nobody likes bassists-- even the bassists wish they weren't bassists. You could edit them out of just about every song and I would never notice.

QOTSA's old bass player did.
I forget his name.
