Steve DiGiorgio is a pretty good bass player. eh plays fretless bass and doesn't afraid of anything.

But pretty much I've seen the obligatory candidates for best bassists: Les, Cliff and a bunch of other guys I've never really heard of (Plus I think DT sucks so whatever). However I'm throwing in Tom Araya because his bass is a good supplement and Dag Nilsen because he has some really cool bass fills in Darthone's first album Soulside Journey [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWK-mHPugVA].

Bass provides the link between the guitars and drums, it creates a lower frequency foundation that filled up the sound and gives people something to dance to. Without it, the rhythm and melody would be in two separate worlds, the whole sound would sound hollow and empty and people just wouldn't dance. Bass is a major part in Reggae, Funk, Jazz, Latin, Disco and hell every other genre (it just stands out more in those mentioned). Maybe you should learn something about before you come and say stuff like that.
Typical bassist, playing-up their minute role in music-- reveling in perceived self-importance.

There's a reason bands turn bass music down as low as possible-- like you say, its essentially background noise to bridge the empty areas. Their job could easily be filled by a chimp who had been taught to strum the same pair of notes throughout every song.

Yes, you have been successfully trolled.
Listen to some Autopsy or Bolt Thrower, and you will realize how important the bass is to their style. Obituary's Slowly We Rot is a good example of a bass dominant album. It's a Death metal album in standard E tuning, but it manages to sound extremely and unimaginably heavy. Why? Because the bass is in front.
You see the white text right?

Chris Wolstenholme of Muse, because I love all of his riffs. His bass is very solid, and helps make up for the fact that there is no rhythm guitar in the band.

This is my favorite bassist of course, for my favorite band. There is no such thing as the best bassist of all time. Everyone has different styles.
I was losing hope as I scrolled down this thread but then I saw this and immediately began dancing. Chris Wolstenholme is an amazing bassist. I love that man. I any of you haven't, go listen to the album Origin of Symmetry. Great bass lead songs. Also, the song Hysteria. Brilliant.

In the end though, my personal pic for best bassist ever, is the bassist in my choir's band, Andrea Gunraj. She is absolutely outstanding. I consider myself lucky to have played along side her twice in my life.

Cliff Burton followed by Flea

Cliff Burton was an amazing bassist and he pretty much wrote all the music behind Metallica's early stuff, thus greatly influencing thrash metal
Actualy Dave Mustain did that but only their relly older stuff

Why has no one mentioned Justin Chancellor - Tool
Jambi from 10000 Days ftw
To beat a dead horse: Geddy Lee > Justin though

Lemmy plays a Rickenbacker with the treble up through a guitar amp. I think he is a bit confused.

John Myung - Man, all of the guys at Dream Theater are just awesome, and so is their bassist (maybe even the best of them).

I also like Flea's bassplaying - it sounds so powerful - but it can get a bit annoying after a while, too.

I'll just end this thread right here and say Geddy Lee from Rush. Les Claypool of Primus is an obvious and well deserved second place though.
wow. I could not agree more. Flea is VERY overrated.

Twiggy Ramirez (Jeordie White) Just, win!

In other words this freak.
LOL, hadn't seen that Twiggy? If he's the bassist you have ever heard, then you have a hell of alot of great music you've not yet listened too!

Can't belive more people aren't saying John Entwhistle (The Who).

For me it would be either him, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) or Tim Commerford (RATM). Noticed someone else put Sam Rives of Limp Bizkit-I've got to agree he does play some funky shit.

The holy trinity of bassists for me is Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, and John Myung. Though I must give mention to Flea and Les Claypool.
