Best book? Has to be a tie between 'Brave New World' and 'Fahrenheit 451.'

Best book series? Haven't read that many different series, I admit, but I'd probably go with the 'Horus Heresy' novels from W40k (especially liked 'Fulgrim' and 'Mechanicum')... though the Discworld stuff is not far behind.

Oh, and if comics count as book series, definitely 'Transmetropolitan'. Don't know it? Check it out. If you can relate to extremely volatile misanthropic mad genius journalists, you won't be disappointed.

I don't really have a best book/series. I just finished reading the Immortal Instruments series and I enjoyed that. I'm a bit of a sci-fi/fantasy nut. I am yet to find another book to read, some suggestions?

As a series anything by Terry Pratchett, Iain M Banks and Iain Banks.

Best book would be The Battle of Stalingrad by Antony Beevor, The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers by Paul Kennedy, Brainstorms by Daniel Dennett or Cities in Flight by James Blish.

Series would be Hitch Hiker's and Discworld respectively. I couldn't really choose a favourite but thinking recently I would say 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy. It's set in this dystopian, post-disaster wasteland and is about a boy and his farther travelling from the north to the south east of America. Thought-provoking and haunting stuff, check it out.

I think The World According to Garp by John Irving is my favourite book. I am just a sucker for anything that shows the full life of someone set in the background of important cultural events-for example something like Forrest Gump.

I tend to avoid series, but His Dark Materials [Pullman] was sublime.
Other than that..The October Country by Bradbury is my most favouritest book ever. Even though it's a collection of short stories.

Ender's Game is just genius, I know it receives criticism as some people equate Ender with Hitler but as someone who felt the same in school (save for all the death and genocide of course) this is the perfect book. At the end I felt so emotionally drained. Orson Scott Card created a masterpiece with this one.

The Dresden Files and Codex Alera, both by Jim Butcher, are great.

And I'm always happy to jump on the Pratchett bandwagon too.

Haha I've read too many...but here are a few that I really enjoyed:

Any series by David Gemmell is amazing. His Troy series, his last few books, are a pretty interesting take on an old classic. His Drenai and Rigante series are the best I think, but any of his books are great.

I also enjoy Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. It's a world of sex, vampires and 'were[animal]' any animal you can think of to put their. lol if you pick this up, you will get odd looks from the person checking you out. ^_^ good times.

Also, The Sword of Truth series by Terri Goodkind are actaully amazing. Nothing like the stupid tv show that messed it all up. The show doesnt follow the books at all. I will say it is a bit more of a girl thing in the end. Think of RA Salvatore but with a bit more love tossed in for good measure.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I picked it up for about £6 in Fopp on a whim, discovered my favourite author :) I've read it through 3 times and lent it to anyone who'll listen to my ramblings about how great it is :D

For graphic novels, the 9 book series Preacher is just brilliant.

Death in Venice by Thomas Mann is a fantastic read!

I'm also a big Poppy Z. Brite fan at the moment. If you want a disturbing read, get Exquisite Corpse or Lost Souls? by her. They're both amazing!
