Dante's Inferno, Frankenstein, The Curious Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Candide, Things Fall Apart, To Kill A Mockingbird, Flowers for Algernon, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Tempest, Othello, The Glass Castle, Black Boy, Huck Finn...yeah, there's been quite a few good ones.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury was pretty awesome. Not only was it intelligent and relevant, I also loved the quick pacing and the unique way he described things, which is probably why it beats 1984 (also good, but not the best).

Beowulf by whoever deserves special mention, for while I enjoyed it greatly, it is held back from being my favorite by one nagging flaw: the way that damned monk who transcribed it had to tear out all the references to pagan deities and replace them with Christian mythical figures. I really hate it when they do that.

All Quiet on the Western Front
Hamlet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, King Lear, Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest (of those, particularly King Lear)
Moby Dick
The Scarlet Letter
Don Quijote
Paul's Case
A Good Man is Hard to Find

Actually, this post is getting rather long. I read a ton of good stuff in school. It's one of the reasons I took my degree in English.

Lord of the Rings series. :D Read it in seventh/eighth-grade drama. Still one of my favorites ever.

Although I read a lot of books for school (and in my spare time) that I absolutely loved, so I just went to my favorite... XD

Animal Farm and To Kill A Mockingbird are the only ones that really stick out.

I did enjoy Bean Trees though, but I wouldn't say it was one of the best.

The Hobbit and The Road were probably the best books I ever had to read for school. Most others can't even hold my attention.

Directly assigned, Slaughterhouse Five and Of Mice and Men.

For books that I got to read on my own for school, Zombie Survival Guide easily takes the cake, as well as a few Lovecraft stories and Pet Semetery.

Ummm, Probably Huck Finn. In all honesty, I felt that it really deserved the praise it earned as an American Classic and I quite enjoyed it.

Nineteen Eighty Four was by far the best book I read even if it wasn't the one I was meant to.

Oh Flowers for Algernon! I read that in 8th grade. That was a good one. Thanks for reminding me.

I loved the giver too, as well as Pride and Prejudice, Brave New World and we read Desperation by Stephen King in my college English class. I binge read that. My favorites would have to be a tie between Winesburg, Ohio and In Cold Blood though. Damn good books IMO.

I disagree with this. Tom Sawyer I didn't mind, but Huck Finn bored me to tears. Part of it though, was I was reading it in a short time frame and so I was rushed.

Eh, differences are what make us unique. I haven't read Tom Sawyer yet though, although I am willing to look for a copy if I can.

Huckleberry Finn. Loved loved loved that twisted little book. It's odd and funny and instantly memorable. I liked most of the stuff they had us read in school, like Of Mice and Men, I Am the Cheese, The Pearl, The Red Badge of Courage, and Julius Caesar. I always thought the problem with school units on books was feeling obligated to read them at a certain pace. My classmates hated Of Mice and Men and Courage, both of which I read in a single day. If I waited for everyone else, I probably would have gotten sick and tired of them before I was done.

We also had optional units in a point based system, so I got in some good stuff in junior high, like Animal Farm, 1984, Crime and Punishment (which was a book for the advanced kids in high school), Dracula, Frankenstein, Fahrenheit 451, some Poe stuff, Journey to the Center of the Earth...
