God of War's combat system is undeniably fluid and easy to use.

It shalt be nominated!

Just plain combat? Well, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within was brilliant combat-wise. It was always fun to play.

God Of War's combat system is brilliant. Especially with a fixed cam, you can get in close or keep most of your enemies at a bit of distance.

3rd person shooter generic cover system is pretty good to, once you get used to it.

I really like Lost odyssey's and Blue Dragons battle systems. I love turn based games.

Well, for shooters it would be Halo, you might hate the game but combat was perfect by Halo 3.

Fighter type stuff, Batman Arkham Asylum. Awesome how you could transition between running in and punching and stealthily dispatching your enemies and still feel perfect.

God of War III, though the entire GoW franchise has great combat, the 3rd deserves praise because it improved it even more...crazy fantastic and very well defined

Batman AA was also really good, everything was fluid and smooth, the controls felt natural and responsive

I agree that Legend of Zelda (especially Twilight Princess) is one of the most freaking comfortable combat systems ever. Simple enough to just pick up and play with, but complex enough that you can develop a surprising amount of finesse, and it ends up being so much more than simply "swipe swipe swipe".
I for one am completely in love with Metroid Prime 3's combat. I was so happy when they did the Prime Trilogy for the Wii, Prime 2 came that much closer to tolerable difficulty for me with the Wiimote controls.

God of War's combat has me hooked so far: it's intuitive, with every type of enemy having their own strengths and weaknesses, and easy to use thanks to the fixed camera angles.

Honorable mention goes to the early Spyro games: the combat may have boiled down to two attacks, but the fact that certain enemies have any resistances or weaknesses was just really cool for a platformer.

Yeah that lock on system in Zelda 1 and 2 were amazing...and nonexistent.

OT: It depends on the type of game.
For turn based RPG style, I always liked FF7's materia system. I also love Chrono Trigger's battle system because it doesn't go to a new screen. Also the double and triple techniques were a great idea.
And who can forget FFTactics, Chess meets an RPG?

As for non RPG, well Timesplitters is awesome. Max Payne was a ton of fun.
Lots of games have their own little quirks that make the combat fun.
And lots just copy paste bad controls with bad combat.

Fire Emblem gets credit for creating Chess Meets RPG, not FFT.
Ah never played it so didn't know. But oh well I didn't think FF created it anyway, it was just a good game. Maybe I'll try Fire Emblem one day.

Funny you should say that, I think Turn Based Combat is a piss poor attempt at "strategy" since most games just require you to pick the strongest attack and make you watch the annoying animation again.

I also vote God Of War and Warrior Within, they were both so fluid and brutal. I also vote Shadow Of Rome, gory, satisfying and fairly deep combat with a variety of weapons. You can make a fat mans skull an effective way to kill others.
Well I disagree, but we all have our opinions.

Also like the first two Gothic games combat. Simple but good.

These^....except maybe Demon's Souls. I mean, the combat system goes more like....non existent.
Just cast "firestorm" and everything goes byebye. Including bosses.
(I also nominate DMC 3 for sheer awesomeness.
Shadow of the Colossus gets best marks for "less is more"

And finally, I nominate FFXIII for worst combat EVER.....wait no, that's assuming it even qualifies as a combat system.
