The original SPECIAL system (Fallout, Fallout 2) is by far my favorite. Well calculated and easy to figure out.

I liked Soul Calibur 4's combat system.
The best part about the game, you can use a little more strategy then in most fighting games.

As for my favorite combat system? Hmmmm... I do love the combo system in Legend of Legaia, made turn based combat more fun and unpredictable. After all, being able to discover moves DURING combat, awesome.

Earthbound. The way your health ticks down instead of instantly allows more fluid combat. The sequal, Mother 3, improved it even more

Either God of War, Prince of Persia (Warrior Within/Two Thrones) and Demon's Souls.
These^....except maybe Demon's Souls. I mean, the combat system goes more like....non existent.
Just cast "firestorm" and everything goes byebye. Including bosses.
(I also nominate DMC 3 for sheer awesomeness.
Shadow of the Colossus gets best marks for "less is more"

And finally, I nominate FFXIII for worst combat EVER.....wait no, that's assuming it even qualifies as a combat system.
Magic is easy-mode in Demon's Souls. I think it takes the same path of Shadow of the Colossus with it's "less is more" ethic. There isn't anything flashy in Demon's Souls, just strategic thinking.

My favorite combat system is that of Mount & Blade [http://www.taleworlds.com/main.aspx] (the original, not Warbands). I like directional combat since I find it more interlectually engaging than mashing buttons. Having to choose a line of attack, or defend it, creates a fair degree of tactical choice. I thougherly recogmend that people try it.
Sorry for the double post, but this too. I'd forgotten how much fun Mount & Blade is, especially its combat system. Took me a while to realise how powerful a spear charge on horse-back is. What's wrong with Warband's combat system? Have they changed it? I haven't played it yet.

I think Assassin's Creed 2's system worked well. It could be a little buggy, but they really thought of a lot of things.
This...

Also Disgaea's psp battle sys works well

God Hand or Urban Reign for beat 'em ups.
King of Fighters XI for fighting games.
BoF: Dragon Quarter for RPGs.
Castle Shikigami 2 for shmups.
God of War 2 or Devil May Cry 3 for action games.
Team Fortress 2 for FPS games.

Best Combat Overall: The Punisher. No, I don't expect you to agree, but then I don't expect you to have played it, either.

Finally getting into God of War (bought Collection a couple of days ago) I'd have to agree that it has a great hack 'n slash system.

Also, while not perfect (note to Sega: I understand that having troops to observe enemy units is part of the strategy, but leave some way for me to actually prepare), I give Valkyria Chronicles points for its direct unit control along with the more precise strategy demanded, lack of grid (nothing against them, but it's an interesting change), and intercepting fire.

Half life 1 easy.

When it came out to changed the FPS from the doom idea of of an fps to the to the modern idea of modern idea for one (with puzzles and story not just pure killing stuff)

Half life 1 is still the most revolutionary game.

Resident Evil 4, even though you couldn't move while shooting (though actually, rather fun in a survival horror way, though not really realistic)

Halo (despite the BR) and CoD (despite ridiculous sprinters) have long been pretty solid, though most fps are (I didn't like Killzone 2 at all though)

I enjoyed Pokemon and Advance Wars for turn based (thats about it though)

I enjoyed Armored Core 4 with its faced pace robot action (though it had little else)

At the moment, though, I enjoy the overall combat/stealth system of MGS4 the most though. It's quite complex, not always smooth, but ridiculously versatile. So much so that I wish it had come out for the PC. The mods you could get from that would be fantastic.

I know I'll be in the minority here, but I feel like Persona 3/4 absolutely perfected turn-based combat.
Both are good.
However P3 is flawed by poor decisions by AI controlled party members.
Me: Oh, the enemy is only damaged by pierce, and uses Pierce counters... Aegis! Do your stuff!
Aegis defends.

Me: Hey Aegis! YOU are perfect for this situation. Do your stuff.
Aegis defends.

Me: Look, I'll attack first, take a hit, but maybe it'll give you some ideas. Bam/Counter!/Ouch!
Aegis Defends.

Me: ...
Aegis Defends

Me: ...
Aegis Defends

Me: Blargh!
Aegis Defends

Persona 3 FES fixed that (I think but since I beat P3 Vanilla, I had no reason to play FES)
Persona 4 is pretty much the same as FES I think.

But it's pretty standard turn-based (find weakness, attack weakness).
Uhm. That's why you are supposed to tell your team what to do - I always set Yukari to heal/support, so she doesn't try attacking with a bow (unless the enemy is weak to Pierce, that is) and I take either Mitsuru and Akihiko or Mitsuru and Aegis/Aigis. Tried using Junpei, he's sitting at level 29 or so. Same with Ken - never used him more than twice. Koromaru is sitting on level 52, while my character already has level 69 Personae (Thanatos, Raphael).

The best way to make sure your character attacks enemy's weakness? Use the "Knock Down" command. This way they will try to exploit the enemy's weakness.

However, what makes Persona 3/FES/4 combat good is that your characters can miss and fall down, losing a turn, enemy can miss/get knocked down, then if everyone is lying flat you can do an All-Out-Attack, after which you get to Shuffle for cards...

...Man, I must finish P3 by the end of the week and start playing P4.

Hmm... I really liked Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. The combat system was great in that when cranked to the highest difficulty setting and changed to "Realistic", one swipe from a lightsaber that wasn't blocked resulted in losing several if not one of your limbs. Of course, it does make it an extremely hard challenge, but I like that sort of thing. I don't know why, but getting cut in half when failing to simply block, front flip, cartwheel, or pull off some insane evasive maneuver never gets old to me. It was great because 'realistically' you wouldn't be able to take a large number of hits directed at your jugular before so much as coughing in embarrassment- You'd swing your saber to block the other guy's, and if you didn't, then you were carved up like a chinese chicken, and mailed back to your Master for superglue fun.

Not only that, but so many combat systems I see today are more or less: The attacks are nice and theatrical and all that, but blocks, and other such defensive actions are simply standing still and holding your sword or whatever unfortunate animal you want to call a shield in front of you and standing still, like you're a human statue painted in gold, waiting for someone to brush their head passed your crotch by accident, or maybe that was just me.

Anyway, I find that SWJKJA was a fantastic game in that the combat was fluid, attacks and blocks actually involved you moving your sword to block the other one, and the saberlocks really were a good excuse to break a shitty mouse if you had one, so you could bug your parents or just go and take the better mouse that no one ever uses.

Oh, and the force abilities weren't terrible either, really quite humorous actually.

Mine would probably also be Zelda. I've never though about it, but it always has had a great combat system, even in the 2d ones. I like the Elder Scrolls combat system too. I always wondered what a FPS would be like if you took out the S.

I always liked fables, though more recently I've enjoyed demon's souls.
