Mount&Blade is the hands-down winner. Its more than just mashing 1 or 2 buttons or spamming a combo. You'd have to see it to know what I am talking about but once you see it you will agree.

Personally I really liked the combat system in condemned, not including when they give you a gun

When you punched someone, they acted accordingly

Dark Messiah Might and Magic if its a fantasy. Its so unbelievably solid, I'm suprised at how underrated it is.

The combat in Batman: Arkham Asylum was really good. The one problem with it was that it was controlled mostly by on button, which could lead to pains in your thumb if there are lots of enemies around.

Yes, it shall.
It is my favourite combat system because everything takes a turn for the awesome, and it's easy to remember the combos.

What do you feel is the best combat system in any game?
For me it's got to be Tekken. So simple it's brilliant and when realised it makes all moves in a character's set intuitive.

In case people aren't aware.
square = left arm
triangle = right arm
cross = left leg
circle = right leg.

Genius for a beat 'em up.

So is all of that genre, it has to be otherwise the game wouldn't work. From DMC to bayonetta to Dante's inferno, there all the same combat system.

Thats not to say there great though.

On topic. I pick your avatar, it had basic and simple combat system (heavy and light attacks) but it had the extra element of the executions ... which were awesome.

My vote has to go to Toribash.

Extremely tough to figure out for most people(including me), but very fun when you get the hang of it.

Toribash is a free to play fighting game, with free online play. Basically, you get a Tori(a human figure) that has different joints and muscles, like people. You click on the joints and muscles to expand, contract, or rest them. Depending on how you switch them, your character will move. Once you've set your joints(or time runs out), the game will play trough a few seconds, then you get the chance to change joints to complete attacks or counter your opponent.

The game is brilliant, and a very small download.

for god's sake, enemies shouldn't be able to take 20 slashes straight through their bodies, it makes it look like you've got a pipe instead of a giant sword. I'd like to see a system in which enemies are really hard to hit as they dodge/parry your blows a lot, but once you hit them, you chop them in freakin' half.
You would just have to keep in mind that you want the player to have fun, not be frustrated by enemies blocking or dodging every attack.

You would also have to think about enemy types, theres always a fast agile guy (which is what you described), how are you going to put that into the massive slow but strong guy? Like you said the guy has to receive realistic damage, getting hit with a sword means your atleast losing a limb, which means the slow, strong types that should absorb damage down down in 2 or 3 hits.

You could avoid the slow, strong ones but then you fall into the trap of just throwing one enemy at the player and the only challenge being hitting the damn guy.

Don't want to piss on your parade, just making a small point. I do agree though, enemies shouldn't be able to shrug off a sword slash.

Honestly, there is no doubt to it that Mount&Blade: Warband has the best melee combat system there is, at least for multiplayer. Single player too, actually, but that's just my opinion, I can understand it that some find it a bit unspectacular, or that some find it annoying that the protagonist is not stronger in stats or equipment than any other soldier. For multiplayer, it's more or less a fact. Unfortunately, I cannot deny I am a terrible fanboy.

The following video is from a rather early beta version, but it showcases the combat very well.

No, the santa hat is not in the full game :p.

This is just showing infantry duels. There are also throwing axes, javelins, bows, crossbows, shields, horses (with mounted combat possible including most of these weapons; some heavy crossbows or large shields cannot be wielded on horseback though), spears, lances, ...

Infantry combat alone is completely controlled with WASD, the mouse, mouse buttons and a kick button, yet it allows three swing directions + thrusting, blocking/parrying in these four directions, feinting, riposting, kicking, ... The strength of an attack is determined by your relative speed to your opponent, how long you've held it in the ready position, how far your opponent is from your weapon's optimum range (a spear loses a lot of power when your opponent is hugging you), where you hit your opponent and your opponent's armour on the body part where he got hit.

Thats exactly how the fighting is in the Jedi Knight series. Some of the animations look exactly the same.
