You know what? I'm sick of people saying that thay would choose a .22 weapon in the zombie apocalypse. The range of a .22 is very short when compared to other weapons and it has poor ballistic qualities. Do you know what it's primary civillian uses are? Shooting rabbits. You are relying on a calibre designed to shoot rabbits at ~100 metres as your main weapon against the undead.

However, I agree with you and Max Brooks about the use of fire as a weapon.

Personally, I'd try to get my hands on a 7.62x51 NATO bolt-action sniper rifle (and hopefully hollowpoint or softpoint rounds) and a semiautomatic .357 or 9x19 pistol for the zombie apocalypse. I'd settle for an SKS, though.
I agree, in fact Max Brooks points out that a .22 would be only for backup at close range. A higher caliber weapon would definitely work better, even though the ammo is slightly heavier.

The shotgun is the obvious pick but a chainsaw comes as a tempting second...

Fire of any kind, especially in HL2. So satisfying to hear them moan in pain.
although fire can be a bad idea, as zombies usually A: don't feel pain, and B: wont be stopped by fire, so now you will be chased by burning zombie.

Isn't that the name of the achievement for killing 250 guys with a shotty in Army of Two? I might be wrong, since I know a lot of achievements adopt names from other mediums like movies and such.

Anywho, on to the question. If I could choose ANYTHING? I'd be rockin a MECH and mowing those bastards down. But since those don't exist..... :(

Guns run out of ammo.... close range weapons risk infection.... Hmmm.... Can't very well go without a weapon though, so I suppose I'd have to go with a 12 guage shotty, and Desert Eagle for some head exploding, and a katana.

Yeah yeah, I know. Typical. But if I'm gonna fight zombies, might as well try to have some fun.
No, it's from Army of Darkness which is part of the The Evil Dead series. Do I get a cookie now?

Also, my friend says he wants an M388 recoilless rifle. Google it. Fallout 3, anyone? Don't ask me, my choices haven't changed.

He also pointed out that a Dodge Ram Maxivan wouldn't really work. So I'm getting a semi instead! As well as two Firebirds (old school). Empty weathered trailer split in two, back half has the Firebirds, front half has equipment and living space. Alaska, here I come!

I realize this, but it's just so awesome in that game. Usually, you want a mechanism to incapacitate the head in one shot.

Straight from the Zombie Survival Guide, the Trenchspike.

In case you don't know (which I can't say I blame you), the Trenchspike was built like a Brass Knuckles with a downward pointing spike attached for a blade. Its primary use was in WWI Trench Combat, and designed to be stabbed downward into an opposing soldier's head.

I would LOVE to see/get a pair of these.
My brother got a hold of one of those (despite the fact they are illegal in New York, much like every single other fun weapon.) and that is an excellent knife. But it might work better on the living than the undead. A wicked skull cracker, brass knuckles and a big ass blade, I'd hate to be at the receiving end of one of these.
Gorgeous, thanks so much for the picture. It's greatly appreciated.

A machete, full tang of course. Decent reach, somewhat compact, and perfect for stabbing or slashing. Plus, they're cheap as a *****.

I have to update my answer, for a full infection i would outfit my-self with the following,

1X A Lancer Machine gun(From Gears of War)
1X A raildriver,
4X Frag Grenades,
1X .357 Magnum (it has the punch to take down any zombie.)
1x Baseball Bat-perferablly some type of metal.
Enough food for 3 days
1X FlashLight
1x Two way Radio
A box a matches
Kevlar body suit,Riot Armor/helmet
First aid kit.

Now it may be heavy to carry all that, but it will keep me alive long enough for the Military to find me.
