Now that the decade has come to a close (well almost) I've decided to make an awards thread rewarding all of the best movies of the past 10 years. This will consist of 8 categories with 4 nominees each. If you don't like my picks, well, fuck off. This is my review, so if you don't like it make your own. Take note that this will be very very long, so don't start posting shit like TL;RD (or whatever it is).

Now, for the first award:

[center/][h1/]Best Comedy[/HEADING]
[b/]And the Nominees Are...
[spoiler/][i/]Clerks II 2006
[img/]http://22.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ksto2yKgl61qzu344o1_500.jpg[/img]
The long awaited (but unnecessary) sequel to the original cult classic. Clerks II pays tribute to the original while still being able to stand alone. Not only does this show how far the characters themselves have come but also how far director Kevin Smith has come. Many fans where outraged when it was announced (including myself) but we were soon silenced when this comedic masterpiece was released.
[spoiler/][i/]Hot Fuzz 2007
[img/]http://chud.com/nextraimages/hotfuzzonesheetsmall.jpg[/img]
What do I have to say about this movie? Every one here on the Escapist loves it just as much as I. This is the second installment to the "Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright (the first being Shaun of the Dead and the third being the upcoming "World's End") Some of the most hilarious scenes from any decade are found in this movie and despite its few flaws, this is definitely a strong contender for best comedy
[spoiler/][i/]Knocked Up 2007
[img/]http://www.lugaluda.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/knocked-up.jpg[/img]
2007 seems to have been a great year for comedy. This is the second Judd Apatow film and by far his strongest. This is also the first time people got Seth Rogen in a lead role and he pulls off the "Chubby but charming" role perfectly.
[spoiler/][i/]High Fidelity 2000
[img/]http://christybharath.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/high_fidelity_1.jpg[/img]
Some may argue that this is more of a drama, but I'm gonna put it in the comedy section anyway. With John Cusack in this dark study of relationships, this is one of the better movies of the 2000s. Comedy or drama. With Jack Black making his usually quips about rock and a dark look at relations, this is a movie anyone can relate with
[b/]And the winner is...
[spoiler/][img/]http://janedark.com/hotfuzz-02.jpg[/img]
Hot Fuzz! Not only is it one of the greatest comedies, but one of my favorite movies of all time.
[center/][h1/]Best Horror[/HEADING]
[b/]And the Nominees Are...
[spoiler/][i/]28 Days Later 2002
[img/]http://engl1102zombies.pbworks.com/f/1199480410/28-Days-Later-Posters.jpg[/img]
This was the first time I was ever introduced to the genius of English film maker Danny Boyle and it scared the living hell out of me. Not only is this movie terrifying, but emotionally draining and sad. There were scenes in this movie that had me trembling from fear and some that had me on the verge of tears. This is a high contender for best horror.
[spoiler/][i/][REC] 2007
[img/]http://caffeine-headache.net/blog3/rec.jpg[/img]
Most people will know this Spanish film for its American remake known as [i/]Quarantine. Well, compared to this movie, that Hollywood crap is utter shit. [REC] centers around a group of people trapped in an apartment complex that has been quarantined from the outside. The reason being: a strange virus similar to that of rabise is infecting the inhabitants of this building. This is one of the few movies where I actually enjoyed the use of the POV camera. It actually makes you feel as if you're in the terror itself.
[spoiler/][i/]Let the Right One In 2008
[img/]http://pacejmiller.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/let_the_right_one_in_poster.jpg[/img]
Let the Right One In is a Swedish film about adolecense, true love, and oh yeah, vampires. It centers around a young boy who hates society and spends most of his time in his room pretending to stab people. He then finds the girl of his dreams living next door and she just so happens to be a vampire. Its complex, its challenging, its emotional and its one of the best horror/romances of the last 10 years.
[spoiler/][i/]The Descent 2005
[img/]http://1416andcounting.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/thedescentposter1.jpg[/img]
If ever a movie could give me a phobia just from watching it, it'd be The Descent. This horror from director Neil Marshal centers around a group of 5 friends who go cave diving in the Appalachian Mountains. The horror is slow to build up but you will eventually find yourself immersed and feeling terrified for the characters. One of the best horrors of the 2000s
[b/]And the Winner is...
[spoiler/][img/]http://pacejmiller.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/let_the_right_one_in_poster.jpg[/img]
Let the Right One In! This movie is just absolutely perfect in almost every way. The characters are perfect, the dialog is perfect, the story is perfect. Everything in this movie is flawless and its my pick for best horror of the new millineum.
[center/][h1/]Best Sci Fi[/HEADING]
[spoiler/][i/]Pandorum 2009
[img/]http://allthingshorror.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/pandorum.jpg[/img]
Pandorum was an underrated gem in my opinion from this past year. It centers around the 2 remaining crew members of a seemingly abandoned space ship set on course for a new planet. The characters awaken from a cryogenic sleep for an undetermained amount of time, with amnesia and slowly begin to recover their memories of who they are. Though they soon realize they aren't alone as what appear to be aliens begin attacking and tormenting them. This is a hidden gem that I would recommend to any Sci Fi fan
[spoiler/][i/]Serenity 2005
[img/]http://www.nufah.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/serenity1.jpg[/img]
Come on. Do I really need to explain myself? This movie is terrific and if you don't agree you can go straight to hell.
[spoiler/][i/]Sunshine 2007
[img/]http://www.firstshowing.net/img/sunshine-poster-big.jpg[/img]
Another masterpiece from Danny Boyle. The plot is fairly simple; 50 years in the future, the sun is dying. They send a group of scientists to re-ignite it, but that group is soon lost. So they send another crew after them and to take over the mission. Even though the plot is a bit cliche, its done in such a superb way that it doesn't matter. You begin to feel immersed with the characters as you see their psyche begin to fail the longer they're on this spaceship together. An excellent move and a top contender for Sci Fi of the decade.
[spoiler/][i/]District 9 2009
[img/]http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2009/05/08/district-9-poster.jpg[/img]
Almost like the little movie that could. First time director and first time actors. Who'd have known this would be such a masterpiece. For those of you who don't know, the movie centers around Wikus van somethingson and the aliens who have are stranded on Earth and one of the "Prawn's" plan to get back home. The movie is amazing and extremely well written and acted especially from the main character whom you'll be rooting for and relating to one minute and loathing and wanting him to die the next.
[b/]And the Winner is...
[spoiler/][img/]http://schoolgirlmilkycrisis.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/serenity-image.jpg[/img]
Serenity! Of course, I'm a nerd, I loved the series, so of course I'd love this movie like no other.
[center/][h1/]Best Drama[/HEADING]
[spoiler/][i/]The Pianist 2003
[img/]http://icroc.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/pianist_271.jpg[/img]
This is the most personal film Roman Polanski has ever done. It centers around Adrian Brodei's character (I can't spell his name) a radio piano player who is forced to go into hiding during the Polish invasion of World War II. This is an amazing film that should be seen by everyone. Adrian Brodey gives his most famous performance in this outstanding picture by Roman Polanski.
[spoiler/][i/]Pan's Labyrinth 2006
[img/]http://darkaeon.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/pans-labyrinth-poster.jpg[/img]
Who would have thought the director of Hell Boy would have made such a moving film? Pan's Labyrinth centers around a young girl in hiding with her family during June of 1944 after the Spanish Civil War. She is constantly tormented by her abusive step father and creates a dark fantasy world as means for escape from the violence of her guerilla hunting step father and the domestic violence at home. Almost like a dark Alice in Wonderland, if you will.
[spoiler/][i/]Mulholland Dr. 2002
[img/]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0f/Mulholland.png[/img]
One of the few David Lynch movies to actually make sense. Mulholland Dr is a neo-noir film about an aspiring actress who meets and befriends an amnesiac living in her aunt's apartment. The story takes many twists and turns as Naomi Watt's character tries to discover her new found friend's forgotten past. This is a definite pick for best dramas of the 2000s
[spoiler/][i/]Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003
[img/]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0d/EsdlaIII.jpg[/img]
The final installment to Peter Jackson's highly praised franchise. This is most certainly the strongest of them all as it deals with deeper emotion and drama than the first two. This continues the story of Frodo and the Fellowship's quest to return the one ring to Mount Doom and the battle to end all battles. A very strong contender for best drama.
[b/]And the Winner is...
[spoiler/][img/]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0d/EsdlaIII.jpg[/img]
Yes, Return of The King is the best drama of the year. This movie immersed me like no other before (and a bit after). I felt the triumphant glory of each victory and I felt the sting and sadness of each defeat. This movie is my favorite drama of the 2000s. Plus, the scene where Frodo leaves Sam for Golem makes me cry every time.
Now, I've finished all of the major awards, I'd like to award the rest of my favorite movies quickly:

[b/]Best Crime Movie
[spoiler/]Nominees:
-The Departed
-Munich
-Zodiac
-Gran Torino
[spoiler/]Winner:
[img/]http://blogs.citypages.com/amadzine/Zodiac1.jpg[/img]
An amazing movie from David Fincher. Most of the violence and murders take place within the first hour of the movie. The rest deals with the characters and how their lives are changed/destroyed from this one serial killer. Jake Gyllenhaal's character becomes obsessed with the Zodiac killings and determined to solve them even while risking the safety of his own family. Its one of my favorite movies and it gets better each time I see it.

[b/]Best Movie Based on A Comic
[spoiler/]Nominees:
-Sin City
-Watchmen
-V For Vendetta
-The Dark Knight
[spoiler/]Winner:
[img/]http://tengossip.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/2008-the-dark-knight-batman-movie.jpg[/img]
What can I possibly say about this movie that hasn't already been said? Nothing I can say will do it justice. This is a near perfect movie in every way.

[b/]Best WTF Movie
[spoiler/]Nominees:
-Memento
-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
-Minority Report
-AI Artificial Intelligence
[spoiler/]Winner:
[img/]http://www.cartelia.net/fotos/m/memento.jpg[/img]
This is yet another fantastic film by Christopher Nolan. A man suffering from short term memory loss uses post notes and tattoos as clues to the man who he thinks killed his wife. One of the biggest what the fuck movies, but also one of the best movies ever made.

[b/]Best Animated Movie
[spoiler/]Nominees:
-Howl's Moving Castle
-Wall-E
-Paprika
-Spirited Away
[spoiler/]Winner:
[img/]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_r4h0Wosu3Og/SlI1C4z7ftI/AAAAAAAAAV0/sC0piGjdWIQ/s400/howls-moving-castle.jpg[/img]
Another beautifully rendered picture by Anime master Hayoa Miyazaki. The movie is about a young girl on a trippy dream like adventure with a magician known as Howl (voiced amazingly by Christian Bale). The movie itself has a wonderful plot full of amazing characters but where it really shines is the animation itself. That's why I give it the best animated movie of the 2000s.

Now for the main Award:

[center/][h1/]Movie of the Decade[/HEADING]

This award's nominees consist of the 4 listed here and every movie that has won a previous award, so that's why you won't see Return of the King mentioned again, because its already nominated.

[b/]And the Nominees Are...
[spoiler/][i/]Inglorious Basterds 2009
[img/]http://www.phresh.cc/reel/onthereel/2009/i/inglourious_basterds/inglourious_basterds-poster2.jpg[/img]
My personal favorite Quinten Tarantino film. The story is about a group of soldiers called The Basterds in Nazi occupied France who go on a rampage by killing as many Nazi's as they possibly can, with a paralleling story of a young girl who survives the massacre of her family by the hands of the sinister Col. Hans Landa and plots revenge against the Nazi army. This movie is well written, superbly told and terrifically acted.
[spoiler/][i/]City of God
[img/]http://fandangogroovers.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/city-of-god.jpg[/img]
I honestly can't do this film justice by explaining it. Just see it. That is all.
[spoiler/][i/]Children of Men
[img/]http://thehealingtouch.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/children_of_men_ver3.jpg[/img]
The story of a distopian future. Women can no longer have children, there are no people to carry on the human race, there is no hope for human survival. Save one. A pregnant woman is found and it is up to a group of people to get her to sanctuary at sea from the chaotic world so scientists may save the human race. A beautiful and dark movie.
[spoiler/][i/]Oldboy
[img/]http://images.auctionworks.com/hi/68/67843/oldboy.jpg[/img]
One of the craziest fucking movies I've ever seen. A man is imprisoned for 15 years for no apparent reason. When he's released, he goes on a quest for vengance to find those who imprisonment. It is a dark story with many twists and turns along the way and one of the most fucked up endings I've ever seen in a movie.
[b/]And the Winner Is...

[spoiler/][img/]http://www.collider.com/uploads/imageGallery/Inglorious_Bastards_/inglorious_basterds_fake_movie_poster_onesheet.jpg[/img]
I have a message for the Germans! Inglorious Basterds is the greatest movie of the last 10 years. Fantastic writing, great direction and one of the most twisted and sinister villains in cinema history makes this the best movie of the 2000s.
Whew. That took a long fucking time to write. Well, hope you enjoyed this review of cinema's last 10 years of movies.

I'm off to bed...

Any comments would be greatly appreciated and go ahead an name your movie of the decade.

I honestly wouldn't put Return of the King or Let the Right One In in either of the categories they ended up in on this list, but I just went by what was on the description on the movie website or on the box.
Fair enough, can't argue with the box. :D

Oh okay. Well box also refers to one's...well...their junk. As in their groin area.

If you say "someone's box is impressive" that means they have great genitalia.

Never heard that one before. I've heard it referred to as junk, kit, package, equipment, tools, and many others, but never box.

Must be a *checks* American thing. :D

Must be. But it comes from when people call it a "package"

Box. Package. Same thing basically.

Yes, well it'd be quite odd if your package was box shaped.

I have to say, I disagree with every single one of your "Best ____" winners, and your picking of Serenity as Best Sci-Fi seems too fanboyish. Then again, you aren't a real reviewer for any major news website, so what does my opinion matter? more to the matter, why do I even care?

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but there are some I just absolutely disagree with. Hot Fuzz... Yeah, it was good, but Shaun of the dead was even better. Hot Fuzz was basically that but with a new plot. Some of the same jokes. Good, but not the best. Serenity. Yeah, it was pretty good. I'll skip the others cause I didn't watch them. Inglorious Basterds... Best movie of the year? To quote Yahtzee, In short: No. In long: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. It wasn't that good. I thought it was pretty good at best. I forgot about 28 days later. I kind of agree. I haven't seen many horrors, so yeah, I agree.

I was surprised that the comedy section included Knocked Up (Superbad is in my opinion a more refined Seth Rogen movie, if that's why you're picking it) and to see no Moon in the sci-fi section. I was also surprised to see Pan's Labyrinth and LotR in drama (though I understand why they're there, I assume that if there were a fantasy section they'd been in fantasy instead?), and to see Dark Knight Returns in the comic book section, if only cause I understood that aside from the very general idea of the characters, the movie was NOT based on any particular DC comics plot. Also, I feel that at this point the films have more or less stolen Batman from the realm of comics to the realm of film, at least to a great many people who watch and admire then but don't know jack about comics (like me!).

Inglorious Basterds was a surprise ending. I figured the nominees would be taken from the existing winner's lists, or that there'd be a crapton more. Also, technically speaking, I think Children of Men and City of God are both better movies. Probably Oldboy too, though I never saw it (I will get to it much faster now, though!). Especially with Basterds being so recent, and the others needing the dust blown off.

As to the review vs. opinion thing, I'd argue that a proper review would take more technical, objective aspects into account. One example I'm thinking of is MovieBob's comment in his latest column that while Transformers 2 is a bigger failure, Blind Side uses all the right angles to SEEM like a good movie while in reality it's a horrible, horrible thing that will be liked by way too many people for all the wrong reasons. There's a balance between the technical "is this a well-made movie" aspect, the personal "did I like this movie" aspect, and the greater world of movie-making/-going. Not like I don't appreciate this, but, yah...

As to the earlier suggestions to the comic-book movies: though a great film, American Splendor is more a biopic, or even a near-straight documentary, than it really is an adaptation of the American Splendor comics. Road to Perdition was great (basically a really, really good interpretation of Lone Wolf and Cub in 1920's mob-controlled America), and like with A History of Violence the producers chose not to mention that little detail too much. It also depends on how much you intended to say comics from within the geek community vs. comics that are meant to appeal to non-geeks (I can tell you that Road to Perdition is not a very geeky comic, though admittedly it being a comic at all is geeky in a sense).
