The Great JT's comment had me (even as a fanboy) laughing my head off. Interesting perspective there.

Dissidia is what I'm playing atm and even though its in a handheld format its so customizeable and detailed when its comes to potraying the main hero/villans in a different view.
I really can't wait until pay day and I get Dissidia as Crisis Core was the only reason I bought a PSP (although it has it's other uses, as it's now nicknamed Paul's Station 'o' Pron).

Looking into Dissidia I thought the story looked a little wet, especially because as far as I knew none of the FF games except for X-2 connected in any way and this seems as more of a "filler fun fighting for fanatics" game. However, I'll have to wait and see

FF VII I heard was only famous because of the fact it was on the PS2 so most people played it before any others.
Not true, since FF VII was released on the PS1, not the PS2.
Haha, I know nothing on the subject, and that would probably explain it. Either way I hear many mixed views towards FF VII.

Personally, I would say either X or Tactics, although VII, VIII and XII would be pretty close contenders.

For me, I just loved X as it was one of the first JRPGs, let alone Final Fantasy games, that I played and it just sucked me straight into the genre, while Tactics was refreshing, as well as having brilliant and likeable characters and a very interesting plot.

There are many sites out there nowadays selling old games that are hard to find in the shops - some of which you purchase (like ebay and amazon) and get them delievered and some you can download PC versions once you buy them. You can even do it illegally if you don't mind having the police, FBI, SWAT, NATO, RAF and Tex Murphy knocking at your door for Christmas dinner *A-hem*.

If you want to play FFIX so badly I suggest you do one of those

Note: This user does not practise or condone any illegal activity and believes that all games should be purchased legally as that way some credit (and money) is given to the owners of the intellectual rights of these games - so that they can, in the future, if they wish make crap (or very rarely good) sequals and not only have enough budget to squeeze every last penny out with a rubbish low budget movie in 10 years time, or, spend the next 11 years getting together enough money to finally make another Duke Nukem game - AMEN!

FF3, as it is the best of the few I've played. [Others were 4, 2, 1, Crisis Core and 11.]

I thought 8 and 12 were the best ones, 8 for the story and the GF's, 12 for the ace graphics, and the great new gambit system.

For me its VII BUT i can justify it. Granted il agree that by today?s standards the game is overrated but for its time there was simply nothing like it. Found memories of racing out of bed on Saturday mornings to play ( getting a little nostalgic here) Never has a video game gotten me so immersed in its world. Second i would have to say IX, i thought the main character was probably the most unique and likeable character of the franchise, that mixed with its unique brand of steam-punk art was a formula for greatness

The GF system in 8 was awesome.

The Aeon system in 10 was my least favourite because you had to have Yuna out and the system became more of an Aeon will take a battering from a bosses big move leaving your party out of harm's way - which isn't what the summons are really meant to be used for in the FF series. They're usually more of a hammer in your party when you need to get a bit more damage out but your party is running low.

I'm going to go with the OP here and say FFVIII. Everyone I ever knew or cared about was hooked on FFVII but I could never understand why... it didn't hook me like FFVIII did, which probably has something to do with the fact I don't really like blonde-haired prettyboys with swords bigger than their entire bodies. That and Squall kind of reminds me of me.

Damn it, I want to play it again now. Better get digging.

Squall always reminded me of me too, probably because he has dark hair and so do I and he was always sort of the corner boy and never really said much and was kind of quiet, like me, especially as a child.

I loved IX, myself. I'm not entirely sure what it is I find appealing about it, apart from the brilliant visuals, the set character skills (which helped define them), and the way abilities worked.
I also loved how they worked summons into the story. It always bugged me how the big villains spent ages finding/building ways to destroy the world when every person in your party could instantly summon a f*ck-of big dragon, a creature with a black hole for a mouth, the god of lightning, a space train, or even the devil, all to kill each goblin you came across.

VIII, in my opinion, had some nice ideas, but adding them ruined what could have been a good game. A junctioning system that allows you to boost specific stats? Cool, but we're going to make it take hours to get what you need to do so. Magic? No, you can't use that, you need it to boost your previously mentioned stats. Summons? They're going to be pointlessly long winded animations so that you won't want to use them after seeing them once. Yes, this means your characters will do nothing but basic attacks for hours at a time, but hey, you have a card game that ultimately gives you nothing! Oh, and did I mention that all the enemies in the game level up as you do except for the final boss who is f*cking hardcore, meaning you'll have to cram hours and hours of tedious levelling in at the end?
The story was kinda badly thought out too. Squall&co must have dropped their character development down one of the massive plotholes, because they had to fudge something dramatic in there to try and make it interesting. What did they fudge in there, you say? Oh, just that they all grew up at the same orphanage together when they were kids, except that none of them remember apart from one guy who never thought to bring it up, despite the fact that the big-bad was running said orphanage. No, I'm sure the bad guy won't reveal that little fact just before you kill them in order to throw you off.

My favourite has definately got to be FFIX. I have never been so drawn into a JRPG story before. The various cutscenes, especially those with the Eidolons, made my jaw drop on multiple occasions. Furthermore, I liked ALL the characters (and I can't say that about other instalments) and the gameplay was really fun.

My second favourite is actually the very first one (or at least, the Dawn of Souls GBA version). Some people have criticized it for being so simple, but I disagree; I like the simplicity because it feels more like the PLAYER'S story, rather than the story of a character the player controls. Know what I mean?

I'd forgotten about the orphanage thing, probably not too bad a loss though - I didn't really get it either.

Also some of the areas in FF have been known to get a little long winded - sometimes I did feel that I wanted to get to the end of a zone because something cool was going to happen and instead I got whacked with 10+ random battles.

However, it's things like that I take with pinch of salt as in the end it's what makes FF what it is - which is - great and I wouldn't change any of it for the world.

Oh, how could I forget... FFTA was awesome - the story wasn't exactly stellar stuff but finishing off all the side missions to eventually use the Judgemaster as a clan member was just too awesome to pass up.

Irvine being as confident as he was and then at the last second freezing up when he's about to snipe Edea - I've done a fair bit of theatre in my time and I know what that's like. "It'll be alright on the night" isn't always true :p

Yes, because clearly he never brought up...
...that Edea and Cid raised them and the other members of your party...
...and that he might have reservations about SHOOTING HER IN THE FACE!

I think think it was just because she was fit
Even if she was like a mummy to them all for years
