I love how the FPS players scream about Fallout 3 being an FPS with RPG elements for 'WoW nerds' and the RPG fans yell that it's an RPG with FPS added for 'Halo tards.' Does no one stop to consider that it may be that Bethesda has simply tried to cater for both camps? Besides, the VATS doesn't really make it 'turn based' anyway. It just pauses the game for a moment while you crack off some shots, then leaves you on your own until you get your AP back up.

Personally, I'd call it an FPS with RPG elements and levelling. After all, it's in first person, and you shoot things. VATS can't be truly considered as 'turn based' and while, yes, you can go into third person, it really doesn't turn it to an RPG by doing so.

That being said, I love Fallout 3, Half-Life 1, 2 and the additional episodes, Bioshock and Goldeneye. Of course, I also loved older ones like Blood and Shadow Warrior.

Half-Life 2, definitely. Also, I'm surprised no one's mentioned Metroid Prime yet, although it might not count.

As for the Halo series, I will never forgive it for introducing the "go suck your thumb" mechanic.
Good point about metroid. More of an adventure game than straight up FPS..... although Prime 3 did have some great action sequences.
And yeah, i hate auto health regen. Especially online.

Resistance 2 for Online play, Timesplitters: Future Perfect for single/co-op play and Perfect Dark 64 for greatest offline multiplayer.

It may be just my opinion, but any game where you can freeze time, and pick the targets to attack, doesn't count as a FPS to me. [Not that I'm holding that against, I'll wait until I play it before I decide whether it's a bad idea for me or not, I don't like too detailed RPG's(Mostly because inevitably, you end up reading walls of text, and I hate that), Fable was a good RPG in my book, not too complicated, but not too superficial, take that as you will.]
Anyways, on topic, out of your choices? COD4... on the PC. I hate the 360 control scheme for FPS's. The mouse feels so much more.. natural, but each to their own.
Because FPS's don't generally have a very strong storyline, if I'm going to choose my top shooter for online/LAN play, it has to be... Tribes 2.. just, UT2004 comes in close, but doesn't quite get there. I've played both those games to death via LAN(my internet has always been too slow for online play).
If the main campaign is included.. well I have no fucking idea really, COD4 is right at the top, if not the top.
Halo... not quite so much(this might change if I get to play it on the PC, where I'll find it more fun), Microsoft, if you pull the same Win Vista, or Win 7 only bullshit again, I swear I'll rip the person who authorised such a horrendous fucking idea's, nuts off, and shove it down his throat, then I'll take your anal virginity, with your own fucking penis, then I'll cut your guts out, and piss inside and th... sorry getting carried away. In short, do the same bullshit again, and I'll pirate it, fuckers(Both it AND Vista... ultimate, mwhahaha).

I'm going to be extremely unpopular and say Crysis. No, not just because of the graphics. I love the stealth elements, and more to the point I love the way the stealth is an organic, natural part of the gameplay. I love the immersiveness of it all. I love the flexibility of the nanosuit. To my mind it's a great balance of fun and depth.

Well, I refuse to take a side on the CoD4/Halo 3 arguement, so I give you this:

halo sucks it is nub all da people online r shit and dey dont know a good fps, cos cod 4 is da best everyone nos dat.

cod4 sucks master chief is way cooler than dat pussy in cod4 cos he dies i mean wtf who kills da main character in a game. dats shit.

Either way, it's rather impossible to find the best FPS, because not everyone has the same taste in game. As with everything else in life.

Well I'd say Goldeneye, Doom, Serious Sam or Half-Life. I'll go with SERIOUS SAM. For online the Battlefield series. They are definitely the best.

I go on to say:
Why do people say that the original Killzone was bad? Maybe the game wasn't great BUT the action was great. Same goes for Halo, maybe the weapons and levels weren't that great but the action was great.

Honestly, find the best shooter? The whole thing is stupid. I will give an award to Castle Wolfenstein for kicking of the shooter genre and Goldeneye 64 for making it evolve.

I will mention Timesplitters, Battlefield and Resistance for being good shooters. There are so many.

Honestly, I think that Call of Duty 4 is one of the best, but thats just my opinion.

I'm not so sure about HALO though. It was a decent game but not really on of the best games out there.

Crysis is getting my vote just for the ability to change how you approach each combat situation
on the fly its like 5 different games in one.
The sandbox editor 2 is very easy to use I had no prior experience with similar programs and it only took me a few minutes to starting adding items into pre existing levels

DOOM. Not Doom 3 though, that game lost the point, if there was one with DOOM in the first place.

I'm going to be different and say Planetside.

Technically an MMOFPS, but it hands down beats any online multiplayer you can throw at it :p Tho yes, no single player at all... (Unless you count the amusing offline tutorials)

I'm going to have to go with Half Li...sorry, I can't finish that sentance with a straight face.

I'm going to have to go with either Alien Trilogy or Turok 2: seeds of evil. My reasons being that a) they were fun and b) they were simple (you can keep your rediculous mute scientists, gates and vague plot lines...I don't want them).
And your little spelling dog too!!!

I hope I don't get hated for this, but Left 4 Dead is (for me) easily the greatest FPS I have ever played. Hands down. Can't top it.
