Fallout 3, because not only did it revolutionise the series and make it no longer more boring than watching imaginary paint dry, it was very immersive, especially when drenched in mods, and there was so much to explore and it didn't have bloody pterodactlys jumping at me every three steps (yes, I'm looking at you Morrowind).

The Mass Effect Series.

it takes a special kind of game to make me play through it three separate times, and both Mass Effect games are those special kind of games.

I nominate Final Fantasy IX. It came out in 2000 - 2001, it should count.

Morrowind, Civ 4, Half Life 2, Dwarf Fortress, and Mount and Blade have all been favorites this decade. Overall, I'm going with Morrowind for its deep hand-crafted world that can be extended forever with the excellent mod community and easy to use tools for custom content.

I had done this kind of thing previously (read through every single god damn post of a high post count thread to check statistics), and it is a bit of a pain but still fun, I could be a masochist, anyways, after I confirmed that the thread got remotely popular I sent a mail to the editorial to see if the top nominees could be placed in the "Question of the day" instead of a forum thread, that would have a higher sample rate and the thread won't have to be bumped.
