This:

It got me hooked on the game faster than most openings do.

and this:

It sets the stage for a game that actually makes you think!

I liked the opening in Prototype. I don't know why but I just found it so...satisfying.
I agree. Is it because of the sheer badassery of Alex? Or is it seeing the Blackwatch mow down infected after infected? The world may never know!

Valkyrie Profile: In order to understand the point of Valkyrie Profile, you need to see the prologue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95s7zxgViFs
That was so horrible, it's hilarious.
Eh, you are right. I hate the game myself, but I consider it to be a good opening because literally sets up the feeling of the rest of the game. That is all you got from Valkyrie throughout the entire fucking game. Incessant whining and bitching.

Tie between Half-Life 1 and the original Modern Warfare.

HL1's intro conveyed so much by saying so little. It effortlessly put you in the shoes of Gordon Freeman, and suddenly you felt like you knew everything about his life.

And Modern Warfare...the submarine level. Never has there been a more intense opening level, in my opinion.

And I almost forgot my favorite of all time: Kingdom Hearts! An absurdly catchy J-Pop song mixed with a just plain amazing intro movie fully sucked me into the game.

Finally, Halo 3: ODST had a very well-done opening, I thought. Sitting in the pod as it launched down to Earth was pretty epic.

For me I've always been a sucker for the Kingdom Hearts openings. That catchy bleeding j-pop gets me everytime.
Yes! This! Simple & Clean, and Sora floating around in the ocean. Then Kairi waking you up and calling you a lazy bum.. Oh, the memories... "Aaah" *reminisces fondly of his youth spent wildly mashing the X button on his PS2 controller slaughtering heartless, and crying in despair after being defeated the umptillionth time by fucking Sephiroth and his Broadsword of Overcompensation.*

All my favourites have been chosen so i'm going to go with the para-jumps at the beginning of MOH Airborne levels, just seeing te scale of the land and all the white Chutes dropping down was quite an impressive sight at the time

Tekken 5's intro, Kazuya and Heihachi destroying shit loads of Jack's only for Kazuya to betray Heihachi and leave him for dead. Should have seen it coming, even Kazuya's line from Tekken 6: BR about it being in his family to betray one another

Silent Hill 2, for some reason that opening scene in the toilet totally set up the atmosphere.

I really loved Soul Calibur 2's opening. It had an awesome factor.
Metal Gear Solid, the original, had a nice opening in my opinion (as in, the intro cinematic before the main menu pops up) and sets the scene of the game really well.

BUT my faviourate opening cinematic of all time is Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The tapestry montage, and then the building up of the music until.... Violins (or whatever the fuck they are) play the Legend of Zelda theme tune and our spirits are lifted as it shows us the Hero of Time being just that - a hero.
Almost brought a tear to my eye first time I watched it. Really, really good opening.

For me, definitely either Gears of War 2 or Mass Effect. The intro to Mass Effect, after you've chosen your character and before the first dialogue scene, is simply brilliant. I also have a nostalgic love of the opening to Half-Life 2. G-man is a spectacular character :D

God of War
It takes balls to kill the main character before you start playing. It just draws you in. you want to know what the hell just happened. And not in a Modern Warfare type of way either. That was stupid. 3 times, really?
