First off, Zelda. Because Zelda made me a gamer.
Secondly, the Yakuza (AKA Ryu ga Gotoku) series. One afternoon I sat down with my friend, we were having beer and it was a nice day outside.
"You know what would be sick?" I ask.
"What?" says he.
"If there were a game that had a fucking awesome storyline like a kung-fu movie with its action, and was set in a sick atmospheric city like Tokyo or Hong Kong...That awesome, noir, jazzy-rock type atmosphere, with neon lights and panoramic cityscapes, and skyscrapers and the cramped-together buildings and shit. Like, I wanna hear Tokyo Jihen in my head every time I boot up the game. And it'd have tons of minigames and so many sidestories - good sidestories, not stupid grindy bullshit - to bring the place to life...oh, and a dating component too."
"Play Yakuza. This sounds exactly like Yakuza."
And, yep. Yakuza was just as I described. It feels like a Friday night every time I boot it up; going out on the town, getting into hijinks, and maybe mackin' on a hostess. It was exactly the right game at the right time in my life. It's now one of my absolute favorite series.
