I'm not entirely sure how well received these games were, they might be a lot more popular than I thought but here are two from the PS1 era that I loved to death.

Galerians.

You play as Rion, a psychic with incredible powers who wakes up in a research center confused, alone and surrounded by people he doesn't know. You use the powers you gain from various drugs in order to make your way through the game. Overuse of your powers or too much stress will result in "shorting" (as in short circuit) which causes Rion to go into overload and will instantly kill all non-boss enemies, it slows Rion's walking speed as he limps along in pain, clutching his head and does not stop unless properly treated with the correct drugs. It is advised that this is avoided at all costs as "shorting" is fatal. The music in this game was fantastic and the gameplay was very similar to Resident Evil. The story is very mature and mostly directed at psychological horror instead of jump scares, similar to Silent Hill.

Fans of survival horror would love this game and I highly recommend it.

Heart Of Darkness.

One of my absolute favourite games on the PS1. Heart Of Darkness is your basic side-scrolling platformer taken to a whole new level. This blew my mind when I first saw it, I was used to side-scrollers, I played them all the time on the SEGA Megadrive (Genesis) and Master System in my day, but this was something that was beyond amazing. The platforming was still about getting from A to B, but the way you did so required more lateral thinking than pixel-perfect precision. Heart Of Darkness was definitely more forgiving than the earlier titles I used to play, insofar as I could save where I was on a memory card, but when you do make a mistake, it punished you HARD.

You only get a few moments sometimes to figure things out and sometimes you are just either relying on trial and error, foreknowledge from other platformers or just plain luck. If you take too long to figure out the logic behind a section or you misjudge a jump then the game will not take it lightly and will insta-kill you with no hope of recovery for a second try, your only choice is to reload and hope you can figure it out the next time.

Impossible Creatures; an RTS that has a Starcraft flavour to it. You pretty much have an army of 9 unit which you create from scratch by combining 2 animals. You choose what body parts you use. Each body part gives stats and/or abilties. The campaign has you "capturing" genetic material by tranqshotting animals so it has a sort of Pokemon-sort of feel to it. It also tries to not overwhelm you. In the campaign you can freely edit your units mid-game. It's thourghouly enjoyable having entirely customizable units which you can set up to suit your play style. Gameplay outside of that is hollow however, but meh.

Monster Hunter AdventureyRPGythingybobby. You're a small human killing epic huge monsters that can 2 shot you. If you enjoy epic boss fights you'll love this game.
Downside is trivial side things to harvest materials. Tracking down the boss in a 9 zone map. Grinding. Yes, you kill a monster for the first time and you make it through it barely. Then you have to kill it 7 more times if you're lucky to be able to kill the next big monster. Given each kill consumes alot of focus and time, you feel too exhausted to do more than a handful of fights in one gaming session.
I played both of those. Impossible Creatures more as I had more fun going around and making monsters (Drunk, for instance) and Monster Hunter after seeing it on X-Play but I was 11 then (16 now) so I had no idea what to do. :p

i remember that game! :D
It was pretty good, and certainly unique.
Dunno where my copy is now, lost long ago....

A great game nobody has ever heard of is Chaos League. It came out before a digital release of Bloodbowl, butis just.. better, with better commentators, gameplay and music. It was the only sports game I have ever enjoyed playing.

Yeah, that. Never played it, but I read about it and I saw like a cell-shaded Anime for it on MTV once. The part with the pyrokinetic fat clown.

OT:

Contact.

The story begins with a scientist known as the Professor flying through space, fleeing from a mysterious enemy known only as the "CosmoNOTs" (Cosmic Nihilist Organization for Terror). He ends up crash landing on a strange planet, losing the "cells" that power his ship. Without power, he is stranded. He enlists the help of Terry, a young boy. Terry agrees to help the Professor by exploring the planet and locating the cells. Helping the Professor is the only way that Terry will be able to get home, but the Klaxon Army are tracking them down, the cells are hidden in some dangerous areas and, as the game progresses, the Professor's intentions are slowly thrown deeper and deeper into question.

The player is included in the storyline as a separate character from Terry, and the game's characters recognize the player as "controlling" Terry using the DS, breaking the fourth wall. Throughout the game, the Professor will talk directly to the player to give hints on how to use the controls and to voice his concerns about Terry. The Professor is eager to keep the player's existence and their role in Terry's life a secret from the boy.

Metropolismania on the PS2. It was a fun city building game. Also I think the guy you work for in it might be Hitler (The mustache, the want to make a utopian society, him giving you the ability to evict people, where in which he sends a special squad to "convince" them to leave, at the cost of you popularity) but I am probably looking too much into it.

Also this is just something that is much more played, but Lost Planet 2. No one I knew besides 1 person bought it, and now basically no one is online for it anymore.

Well I was going to praise Psi-ops: The Mindgate conspiracy, but someone beat me to it.

I would honestly have to say: The Suffering. The suffering was an awesome game where your good and evil morality was in consent flux, the monsters were tied into the story, there was a few boss fights, and every now and then you would go into an acid trip, waste some ammo and it would turn out nothing was there. And the game play itself changed with your morality, not just the ending alone. Even the squeal: The Suffering Ties that Bind was also good, the monsters were adapted to a more, urban mythology, but it was still awesome, and left me wanting more when it ended.

Also from the same time period, Area 52 with David Decuvny and Marlyin Manson. I enjoyed it, it was fun, and Davids voice added a whole new layer of interesting to it. And yet no one seems to have played it.

I'm also going to throw Monster Rancher 4 out there. Perhaps it was my own OCD that made me love this game, I went through every disc in three houses to unlock more stuff on the game, it was still fun, managing training, setting up weekend events, and tending to monsters up to the point where they die. Well... I enjoyed it.

I'm going to toss Amnisa: The Dark Decent and the Penumbra series out there as well.

One of my favorite childhood games was B.I.O.F.R.E.A.K.S. It was a zany 3d fighter with awesome characters. That no one seems to remember or have played.

I also enjoyed AvP Extension, however I do wish as an RTS fan it had been made for the computer opposed to the PS2, RTS games loose alot in translation from PC to console.

As for vapor wear releases that absolutely no one has played, I'll put my hat in for Half-life 2 episode 3.

Dark Cloud 2 and Spore.

The former was the best RPG I have ever played, the latter an intersting game that was still damn good, even if it didn't live up to the hype.

Sorry for double posting, but sine psychonauts has been posted by so many people, I think it is disqualified from the 'best game no one ever played'. Because it looks like alot of people have played it.

It is still a very good game though. Not saying it isn't.

Can I say Sacrifice? Because I'm going to go with Sacrifice. Shiny went down since, I believe.

It's on Steam and GoG now, though, and cheap, so you have no excuse.
Thanks for this. I had never heard of the game but it looks like a lot of fun. Just bought it off Steam for $5.

I will go with Demon Stone. It wasn't perfect but it was fun and hard as hell at some points. And you got to be Drizzt.

...Woah. Didn't think anyone would buy it without so much as asking for any elaboration. Thanks, anyways. Hope you enjoy the game!

PM me if you'd like to try the multiplayer some time.

Drakengard... apparently I was the only person to ever play it.

I actually remember that it had like 5 endings, one of them was actually a massive story changer, as for the other 4 it just had you fighting the same boss for different reasons. I thought that was actually pretty badass.
YES! Someone mentioned it! Drakengard was amazing. You're wrong about the endings though. Each ending you fought something totally different. But 4 and 5 were kinda similar. Could you believe NIER is actually a slight spinoff of ending 5?

OT: For me, the games would be Drakengard 1 & 2 [PS2], Star Ocean 3 [PS2], Legend of Legaia [PS1], Silent Bomber [PS1], Tail Concerto [PS1], Warriors Orochi 2 [PS2], and the ORIGINAL .hack// quadrilogy [PS2]. I'm probably missing something. I'll add it later if I am.

~Drakengard series had combat similar to Dynasty Warriors and Panzer Dragon (Never played Panzer Dragon but I've been told this.) It has the most amazing storyline I've ever seen in a video game. Although it managed to make a Fairy even more annoying than Navi. Who'd figure?

~Star Ocean 3s storyline was mostly good, but the combat is what got me. It has an amazing battle system, and right now stands as one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It also has tons of collectibles and enough content to keep you playing for more than 80 hours.

~Legend of Legaia had an innovative battle system for its time and a rather okay but cliche story. Although its is in my heart as an incredible RPG that shouldn't be forgotten. However, Legaia 2 was a bit of a disappointment.

~Silent Bomber was made by the same people who later came to make .hack// series. The game is quite incredible and I have yet to play another game like it. Blowing up stuff is fun.

~Tail Concerto is one of the most underrated gems to be released. It's fun toony nature and beautiful anime scenes are incredible, and you find yourself attached to the characters regardless of how retarded the game seems. Which is a lot. Your character's name is Waffle Ryebread and you are a doggy cop who rides a mech shooting bubbles to capture little kittens. Purely amazing.

~Warriors Orochi 2 is ANOTHER Dynasty Warriors game. Kinda. And I know, we're all sick and tired of it. But luckily for me, it's the only one I've played. And it's the only one anyone will ever need. It essentially is a crossover of the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchise with 92 playable characters (+2 more for the fighting game mode). Unfortunately my save just got corrupted, won't delete, and I got to start over ON ANOTHER MEMORY CARD. Bleh.

~The .hack// original series was a good set of games. I usually only see people talk about G.U., but not much about this. I REALLY want to try G.U. but so far this game has been amazing and I love the story and the characters, as well as just the way it mimics an MMO so well. If only The World was a real game. If only...
