Best Game that Nobody Played...?

Be sure to read this post, because its not as simple as the title makes it out to be.

Basically, there used to be an "award" in EGM's Game of the Year awards for "Best Game that Nobody Played." I think GameSpot and other sites did things like this, too. I was thinking about how sometimes there are movies that get great reviews and press, but nobody sees them. I realized that, while this used to be common in video games, I can't think of any recent examples. Can you? Am I just not paying attention? Or has the internet and mass media given outstanding games the press they deserve?

Just wondering what your thoughts were.

Feel free to post your favorite game that nobody played, too. Mine is a pretty common one: Beyond Good and Evil. Hoping for that sequel...

It got more than banned. It never got released. Any copies floating around are beta copies. To the best of my knowledge anyway. I know I DID play the Wu Tang game it turned into and it was pretty poor.

I keep hearing that Okami was pretty good, but I never played it myself :p

Of games I have played, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is the best one I rarely hear other gamers mention.

Magic & Mayhem; odd RTS with an RPG flavour to it (not like Warcraft RPGRTS, something, different. Think of it as Dota but you have 148435638568 abilities and epic micromanagment)

Impossible Creatures; an RTS that has a Starcraft flavour to it. You pretty much have an army of 9 unit which you create from scratch by combining 2 animals. You choose what body parts you use. Each body part gives stats and/or abilties. The campaign has you "capturing" genetic material by tranqshotting animals so it has a sort of Pokemon-sort of feel to it. It also tries to not overwhelm you. In the campaign you can freely edit your units mid-game. It's thourghouly enjoyable having entirely customizable units which you can set up to suit your play style. Gameplay outside of that is hollow however, but meh.

Monster Hunter AdventureyRPGythingybobby. You're a small human killing epic huge monsters that can 2 shot you. If you enjoy epic boss fights you'll love this game.
Downside is trivial side things to harvest materials. Tracking down the boss in a 9 zone map. Grinding. Yes, you kill a monster for the first time and you make it through it barely. Then you have to kill it 7 more times if you're lucky to be able to kill the next big monster. Given each kill consumes alot of focus and time, you feel too exhausted to do more than a handful of fights in one gaming session.

PS3 exclusive: 3D Dot Game Heros is a 'homage to old school gaming' as in a major zelda rip off, but that is a good thing. The game is really, really, good. Plays well and looks good. Just like the old 2D games. Reminds me of Link to the Past in Lego and in HD graphics.

PC: I've never played the full version of the game, only the demo, but Solar 2 is pretty fun.

PC: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, which I am currently playing, is very good. Scares the shit out of me at times, but very good.

Hmm, I hope you don't literally mean "nobody", as we'd not be able to post about it, due to not having played them :)

I can think of various "lost" games, such as Warcraft Adventures, Starcraft Ghost, several versions of Duke Nukem Forever (there were at quite a few playable demo versions of games with this title many years before the release version). There's also the early concepts for Halo when it was an RTS!

Okami's pretty near the top of my list of good games that I've played, but which not many others seem to. And Beyond Good and Evil, although I've yet to fully play that one.

"The Warriors" for the PS2, an early Rockstar game about gang fist fights.

Great game, great developer and it was based on a great movie...

Still in my top 3 games ever... probably still my all-time favourite now that I think about it...

Wow, nobody's mentioned Psychonauts yet?

Psychonauts.

The best game that nobody played that everybody then heard about and played because the few people who did play it loved it.

No One Lives Forever on the ps2. It had archaic graphics even at the time but it was amazingly funny. I remember one mission where you had to protect a short sighted American ambassador from assassins with him utterly oblivious to the danger around him. Ah I must swallow my graphics snobbery and go play it again.

You mean if that they give great reviews to things nobody has heard of, or if they give great reviews to things nobody plays because they suck?
