Demon's Souls is made by a Japanese developer, and it's one of the best games I've ever played. However, I dunno if it counts as a 'JRPG', as it doesn't seem to follow any of the tropes associated with JRPGs, and has far more in common with WRPGs.

With that in mind, I'll have to give it to Golden Sun. And the sequel. You really need to play both.

Tales of Symphonia
Real-time combat, good music, likable characters, a cast where everyone actually does something great to prove that they can be classified as a hero, a story that goes somewhere.
I really liked it, in fact, it actually got me interested in playing more JRPGs.

Lost Odyssey, fantastic game in my opinion. Had some excellent characters and felt very epic.

It certainly made me empathise with the characters which is a job well done in my book.

Considering I think it's the greatest game of all time.....

Oddly enough it beat Final Fantasy IX.

The entire Shin Megami Tensei Series, Golden Sun (both), Resonance Of Fate, the Tales series (Despite Namco Bandai being massive assholes about sending their games to the US), and the second two Shadow Hearts games are all ranked as some of my all time favorites.

If we include Japanese-made tactics games, then Tactics Ogre: The Knight Of Lodis gets added to the list.

1: The Pokemon series. Depends on how Black and White are, but for now, I'm gonna say Heartgold. Best game with every Pokemon.
2: The Paper Mario games. Different from most JRPGs, but very entertaining. Thousand Year Door is my personal favorite.
3: Chrono Trigger. You practically NEED to play this game if you are a fan of JRPGs.
4: Skies of Arcadia. Reason #16 that pirates > ninjas.
5: Tales of Symphonia. Takes a little time to get going (even by JRPG standards), but once it does, it's a hell of a ride.
