Star Trek: Armada. Although the game did have a number of flaws, I thought the single player campaign story was extremely well done. Besides, playing as the Borg was great.
Armada was my first and best rts...just plain fantastic

Seems weird that nobody has mentioned Homeworld (both). From what I gather it's pretty rare someone knows about it (even next post confirms it) and it is a very awesome RTS for the following reasons:
1. challenging level planning
2. full 3D environment
3. the leftover units carry over to next mission
4. HUGE mothership :)

(edit for tieing to next post)

Homeworld. You may argue it is well-known amongst gamer communities like these forums but most people haven't heard of it.

Dune 2000. Had it for the PC and PSX. A friend and I even played link up with the PSX version (2 PSXs, 2 TVs, 2 copies of the game). We once had the most epic 9 hours games (seriously, we were up until about 4 in the morning).

But, yeah, very good game overshadowed by C&C.

I kinda miss Settlers. I only played part of the third one, but it was a cool concept. Needing a whole village to properly run an army, down to the guys that shovelled the land to make a spot flat for construction and the guys that just carried the wood and stone around.

I'd say Empire at War and Sins of a Solar Empire. Both excellent, if somewhat overshadowed, RTSs.
I agree with you on SOaSE (That abbreviation will never stick) It can be really rewarding, though it sucks more time out of you than civilisation 4.

Total Annihilation without a shadow of a doubt. The RTS which first got me hooked on all of them, and barely anyone knows about it. Still holds up reasonably well today. (Not counting graphics.)

Also, Star Wars Empire at War and Galactic Battlegrounds, but I thought they were reasonably well known.

Metal Fatigue. Customizable giant mechs. What's not to like about it?

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds was pretty fun. Not many people I know have heard of it (or they confuse it with Empire at War for whatever reason).

The battles could sometimes get really big and complex, but it's major flaw was that there were just way too many resources to farm, and some of them were only good for one or two good units, yet you needed a lot.
I remember playing that, it was basically Age of Empires 2 but with star wars, so instant win.

OT: Rise of nations was epiic.

But the best RTS has already been made, Cossacks: European Wars and all its expansions. everyone play it NOW. xD

there was a shitty aliens vs predator RTS that came out for the old xbox years ago.

It sucks to be the marines (though DoW seemingly stole the concept of "resource point" capture from this game)

It sucks to be the predators

But when you are the aliens, you drag bodies of the other team back to your base and lay eggs next to them to breed more units.

Best RTS battles ever.
Predators sucked simply because of the OPness of their high end units. Keeping it simple made them a bit more fun.

But I actually had a lot of fun playing as the marines. Upgraded snipers and the misslelauncher dudes were bad ass. Their high-end unit exosuit sucked without any upgrades and was only half way decent with. But it had a good chunk of HP and since all the marines were ranged it meant they could take a beating when walking in front of a troop. Wish there was random level generators that would've kicked ass but might've been interesting to figure out how they would do that with the way the resources worked for marines.

Snipers had massive range and did a lot of damage, if you upgraded them they shot through walls. Get four em and focus fire and they take out almost anything in the game instantly.

Total Annihilation.

Too few people I've talked to have heard of it, much less played it. If you haven't played it, purchase it immediately, you will not regret it.
Total Annihilation is very popular for an oldschool PC game.
I didn't like it though, but I also hate DoW and C&C games so I might be just weird.
If you were a fan of RTS games, did you prefer series such as Age of Empires/Kings, Rise of Nations, or Empire Earth? Though they function on similar gameplay mechanic to games like (C&C, Total Annihilation, DoW), they operate on a very different concept of game flow. I found that fans of series such as Age of Empires, usually don't particularly care for games like TA or C&C.

Ya know, for whatever reason many MANY star wars fans (and RTS players) hated Galactic Battlegrounds. I don't understand why! My friend and i thought it was pretty much the ultimate Star Wars RTS. I tried to get into Empire at War, but the ground battles were really very simplistic and terrible.

STAR WARS: REBELLION is woefully underrated.

EDIT:

I also quite enjoyed "Lost Magic" on the Nintendo DS. It was kind of an interesting Role-playing/pokemon/RTS hybrid. The multiplayer online was kinda fun.

Yes and yes.
Total Annihilation was amazing. I loved it way way more then Starcraft.
And Homeworld was/is just phenomenal. I haven't played a better RTS for LAN parties. Epic.
