Bioshock and Assassin's creed were great, but personally the biggest twist for me was Modern Warfare 2. Honestly, I was NOT expecting
Shepherd to shoot you and Ghost. It was the best for me because I nearly bloody cried when Ghost shouted "No!" and got shot, and when his body got just tossed next to Roach's. I don't know why, I just really felt sad at that point.
Everyone seems to Hate MW2's campaign, I love every minute of it.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.

You know what I'm talking about if you played it.

It turns out you don't exist and you can't stay in the world you just bust a nut to save!. Pretty harsh for a game with such a light aesthetic (sp?)

I can't see why nobody has mentioned this one before I did. The only plottwist that made me turn of the game out of shear anger and disbelief. It was that awesome. You had to let it sink in.

(Baten Kaitos cover art!)

After all your travels and fighting for his future and that of the world. Turns out the main protagonist is the main ANTAGONIST. After the 'final boss' he turns on you, turns into a mini devil and throws your entire party in a cell. He even becomes a boss fight later on. Great stuff and totally out of the blue.
Gah, I got ninja'd

I nearly shat bricks when I came across that twist
Double ninja'd...also in Baten Kaitos Origins where:
It turns out the main character isn't talklking to a guardian spirit (YOUR role in the game) and that the player is actually a fragment of the final boss from the first game, hence all of the pseudo time travel and origin story of said final boss.

You find this out after the evil empire angers the main character by ripping his mom's wings off enough so he turns into one of the many monstrosities you've killed already.

I'm slightly surprised no one has mentioned Brutal Legend
When and if (depending if you find the legend thingys) you learn that Eddie is half demon and his parents came from the past and traveled to the future. His father was the greatest human warrior of the time, and his mother was the demon overlord at the time. Fun stuff for everyone.

Plot holes aside, the storyline of Modern Warfare 2 is quite thrilling. If someone can be excused that they like watching an Arnold Swarchenegger movie, they can be excused for enjoying Single Player mode of Modern Warfare 2.

Oh yeah:

Prisoner 627 is Captain Price. He bloody lives.

You are Revan, the Dark Lord, who was thought to be dead. It sounds better if you play the game.
That's the one I immediately thought of myself. You did see it coming a fair way off, but the way it developed made it nifty. :)

The plot twist in Outcast. Because you travelled to another dimension, there was a difference in time. Your team travelled to Adelpha with 10 minutes apart or so, which translated to over a decades difference in Adelpha. This means that the evil tyrant you are trying to stop is not just another Adelphian "alien" but is in fact one of the two researchers that went first and he killed the lead researcher as part of his take over of power.

He then spent the last decade preparing for your arrival with the express intent to kill you and the last team member when you eventually arrived at Adelpha. The "prophecy" that foretold the protagonist coming to save Adelpha was infact the lead scientist telling them to look out for the very distinctive shirt the protagonist was wearing because the lead scientist knew the progatonist was a skilled soldier.

Jade Empire's twist was amazing. It subtly gives hints away right from the start which doesn't make sense until the very end, unlike most game twists which are usually completely blind.

Bioshock is another good example, because when you play it again you can see the extra elements which you paid no attentions first time around.

Everyone already beat me to KOTOR.

How about Quark being your dad in a certain underwater game...

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World:
turns out to be Ratatosk, a vengeance-driven summon spirit ready to destroy humankind, wearing Aster (a human boy, and Richter's assistant, that he killed on a whim)'s skin (to deliberately provoke Richter, who was then blamed for Aster's murder because he's a no-good, dirty-rotten, pig-stealing half elf), and, when he first appeared, he killed the real Emil and stole his memories, family and the rest of it. On top of this, Marta falls in love with him for saving her on that night, when it was actually Lloyd that did it. He never bothers to correct her.
Also, Richter. Just, Richter.

Agreed! Baten Kaitos was a fantastic game and as soon as I saw this topic, I thought of this great game.

I also like the twist in Tales of Symphonia, where you learn the truth about the chosen and world regeneration. It makes you think this is a pretty messed up world you are in.
Darn you i was gonna say that!

I don't think that this needs a spoiler because its so popular.....but that level in Halo: CE where you first find the flood. Still gives me the chills.
