Western: Morrowind. I don't need shiny graphics, I need content and a storyline that isn't totally half-assed. Though enchanting was much simpler in Oblivion, that's about all I'd incorporate into Morrowind...I mean besides good graphics, I don't need them, but I like them.

Japanese: Hmmm...harder. There's a couple sub-catagories I'm gonna go into here.

Strategy: Disgaea. Hard game, but very satisfying. And the attacks are awesome.

Ummm...not strategy..y'know...: Final Fantasy V or Kingdom Hearts 2, I'm torn. They're awesome in different ways. FFV's class system was epic and I loved the story. Kingdom Hearts 2 is the best example of real-time battling in a JRPG I've ever seen, though I'm sure there are better, and the reaction commands are part of the influence for my idea for "cinematic battling"...which it occurs to me I haven't explained ever, but I'll get around to it. Eventually.

The occasional Final Fantasy VII stint keeps me going. Oddly I've played 10 out of 12 FF games and never finished one!

I'd also say Oblivion and Lost Odyessy.

Oblivion, The World Ends With You, Suikoden Tierkreis, Final Fantasy VII (I don't want bandwagon-jumping "FFVII is overrated" fanboys, I liked it, and still today do. A lot). Also, I'm a total sucker for the Kingdom Hearts games.

1) Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn.

2) Deus Ex

3)A massive chasm that separates these two gems of perfection from everything else out there, good though they may be.

4) KOTOR

5) STALKER Shadows of Chernobyl
Nothing else even comes close. Not Final Fantasy x y or z, not Diablo, nor Fallout nor Bioshock.

And oblivion can be taken out behind the chemical shed and shot for being a twat.
You just read my mind except I would replace kotor with morrowind and put deus ex first. maybe bg2 and deus ex could share a spot actually, i've been playing more bg2 as of late.
edit: hmm maybe VTMB could be shimmied in there somehow. maybe above stalker and under morrowind.

Best word ever.

For me it's God of War, with Golden Sun, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, and Ancient Domains of Mystery as close seconds.

Ah, you young'uns and your iPods and your music. In my day we had Chrono Trigger and Earthbound and that was good enough for us to spend the next ten years whining for a remake. Well let me ask ya, who complains about a remake for Parasite Eve, huh? Nobody! Now go back to your Mass Effect alien nookie and your mmorpigs and subscription fees, and leave us old-schoolers to the real RPGs.

...buncha hooligans always on my lawn lettin' their dogs crap everywhere...never turn down the audio, everybody's gotta hear that damn THX-certified 50.1 surround, stereo was good enough for us....all this "progressive scan" malarkey and the 1080 scanlines, well who needs it I say! Interleaved suited us just fine, hell we even put it back in when we emulate so's the damn picture looks right. Get outta here! It's 'bout time for my nightly MUD session and a cup of Earl Grey tea.

The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Disgaea 2, and Tales of Symphonia still remain some of my favourite RPGs, but one of my lesser known gems is Threads of Fate, on the original Playstation. That was my first RPG, and it's just kinda stuck on me over all the years... I still find myself going back to it every now and again and smiling in nostalgic bliss =]
THREADS OF FATE WAS THE SHIT

Seriously. I loved that game, and even have the music on my mp3 player. I used to put Rue in the forest where enemies wouldn't spawn just so I could clean the house to pleasant tuneage. The stump at the beginning was the perfect spot.

I used to be hooked on Japanese style RPGs for years. Final Fantasy especially, as well as multiple others. They were like a drug for me, pure and simple.

I now have a new drug, western style RPGs...

Fallout 3, Mass Effect and Fable II are just simply immense. I find it hard to go back to JRPGs now. I like them for their story, but the core gameplay of WRPGs feels so much more immersive and free.

I'd have to say Oblivion (spent hours & hours on it, I wouldn't like to guess), Fallout 3 and Pokemon (especially Gold & FireRed).

I really enjoyed Stalker:SoC and Oblivion. But I would say Stalker, Oblivion was simply too stiff and buggy. Stalker had a great atmosphere, a very challenging difficulty, and still enough realism. For example: On the hardest difficulty if you fire a whole pistol clip at an enemy's chest you will only injure him, while a close range shot to the head from a pistol is an instant kill.

I would have to say that for me, it'd be an even tie between Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3, Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, Skies of Arcadia Legends, and Super Mario RPG.

Baldur's Gate 1&2, Fallout series, Planescape:Torment for me.
As for JRPG's, I'd say Chrono Trigger.
