It doesn't matter if its a jrpg or a western or even some game with rpg like mechanics.

My favorite rpg (and one of my all time favorite games) is Dragon Quest VIII. Excellent story, great gameplay, awesome music, and one of the things I liked the most was the fact that there was no overworld just one HUGE map to explore, and explore, and explore.

So what's yours?

Oblivion.

Oddly enough, it's because of the much hated leveling system, and the much hated enemy scaling.

Those provide such immense replay value...Enemy scaling and the leveling system means that a properly made class is more important than grinding and equipment. Meaning that I don't feel like I've really lost anything when I delete my level 35 character to start all over again!

Unlike Morrowind, which had the more interesting world, but also ruined my fun with it's many preset item and enemy locations. Glass Armor at level 1 and shit is bull. Fallout 3...just...ugh...yeah.

For JRPGs?

Legend of Mana. Oh god, I loved the non-linear structure, and making the world map myself was great. The game is also quite gorgeous, even by today's standards. And the semi-scaled enemy strength was nice. Their strength was in proportion to the dungeon's location from where you placed your house on the world map, meaning that as you got further, enemies got stronger, but if you need to grind, you could go to old areas.

Morrowind hands down. You get a huge, interesting world full of adventure to explore as you wish. What's there not to like?

Well, I'll point you in the direction of Baldur's Gate II in hopes you'll shut up about the shite fest that was Oblivion, but it won't really do anything but start a flame war.

Therefore I'll just Oblivion blew my socks off. Woot.

Edit: Waitwaitwait, I loved Ultima Underworld. And Icewind Dale was pretty cool.
Not to mention KotOR, Jade Empire and Mass Effect.
Heck, let's just roll with all the Bioware RPGs besides Dragon Age.

Either Oblivion or Kingdom Hearts 2.

I can't ever really decide when choosing RPGs.

On the one hand you have a vast and epic journey through a beautiful open world where you actually feel like you're a part of it and is actually somewhat on the scale of epicness only Lord of the Rings has achieved in the Fantasy section.

And on the other you have a gripping JRPG story featuring beloved characters from 2 franchises that no one ever would have guessed would work together, an almost perfect battle/level system and some of the most engaging bosses ever.

But then again, there's always the straight forward Demon's Souls sitting in the corner taunting me....

KotOR, Mass Effect 2 and Oblivion.

I would have sex with each and every one of them.

Agreed 100%. Oblivion was actually my first Elder Scrolls, but I still prefer Morrowind.

Some bits from its universe just got fused in my brain. Plus, the people in Oblivion were too nice. I'm more used to the "we're watching you, scum" comments than the nice stuff the people in Cyrodiil say.

Might sound strange, but FFXII. I played it a lot (and by a lot, I mean a lot) and enjoyed it a lot. The gameplay suited me perfectly, the activities kept me busy. Might not have been much of a FF, but I sure had fun.

Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door is probably the best RPG I've ever played-- and I've played a lot of 'em. The creative visuals and paper mechanics, the turn-based combat with reflex-based attacks and skills, the genuine humor... all of this blended seamlessly with the Mario brand I've grown to know and love. I know, I'm gushing, but damn... I loved that RPG.

Dragon age and Oblivion have to be my tops at the moment, but RDR is shaping up to look exceptional too.

P.S. Enchantment?

Honestly? I preferred Bloodmoon. The atmosphere was solid, getting caught in a blizzard and swarmed by wolves was terrifying and transforming into a hulking lupine and committing Nordic genocide was more entertaining than the whole of Oblivion, Morrowind and Fallout 3 combined.
Yes, really.

I hate to end the thread so soon, but here goes: Baldur's Gate I + II, particularly SoA and its expansion. These are games that have yet to be surpassed... DA:O would love to be BG2.

As of traditional turn based RPG's, I like FFIV and Mario RPG as my favorites.

As for "other" RPG games, Freelancer :D
