Grandia II for eastern.

Dragon Age for western.
You damn well know that Ryudo is fucking hilarious.
Indeed, and that battle system never gets old after multiple playthroughs. I'll never understand why no one has yet to rip it off, so I wait for next installment in the series.
Now THAT would be one hell of any E3 announcement.

Grandia III came out for the PS2 quite a while ago.

There is no greater rpg. None. Baldur's Gate 2 represents the absolute pinnacle of rpg design that has yet to have been matched by any game since.

Oh, I bought it day one and played it multiple times. I even bought Grandia XTreme (dungeon crawler really) for PS2.

When I siad next installment I meant Grandia IV, my apologies for confusion.

The best? Baldur's Gate 2. Strong story, multiple ways to play the game, detailed and difficult combat, strong characterization and a genuinely sinister villain.

As for more modern games..
Sorry, but core Oblivion (or any major Bethesda production) is just awful...the leveling system, the lack of interesting stories, the wooden characters and the fact that every mission revolves around "Fetch this. Go here. Kill that." over and over again.
And it crashed. All. The. Fucking. Time.

People say the mods make the game awesome. Ok, but I'm judging the game, not its devoted fanbase.

The game is so massive that it does have its good bits, but all I did (all I could bear to do) was beat the game, tried some mods, and never picked it up again. At least it looked amazing.

EDIT: Oh jeez. I totally forgot Tales of the Abyss.
This isn't the best RPG I've played overall, but its combat mechanics and system are incredibly fun with a group, plus it gave us Jade Curtis, the demigod of sarcasm. I probably had more fun with this game just because it wasn't a serious RPG, and because it was the very last game Namco-Bandai put ANY effort into.

Kudos to you who also said Legend of Mana. I only wished that there was a more concrete, underlying plot to the game, because they start too many stories that don't really ever get going. Among the major quests, only the Jumi quest was particularly strong.
The combat system was inches away from being one of the best ever, but Squaresoft royally cocked up the balancing.
You can win every single boss fight by tapping light attack (instead of using combos since it permastuns most enemies). Techs were either horribly overpowered due to damage and coverage, or useless because of the startup time. Magic was wonky and unreliable, but made you unkillable because you are invincible while the animation finishes.

Either Oblivion or Kingdom Hearts 2.

I can't ever really decide when choosing RPGs.

On the one hand you have a vast and epic journey through a beautiful open world where you actually feel like you're a part of it and is actually somewhat on the scale of epicness only Lord of the Rings has achieved in the Fantasy section.

And on the other you have a gripping JRPG story featuring beloved characters from 2 franchises that no one ever would have guessed would work together, an almost perfect battle/level system and some of the most engaging bosses ever.

But then again, there's always the straight forward Demon's Souls sitting in the corner taunting me....
ah, i agree, it is hard to pick between the Kingdom Hearts series and Oblivion. i say the series, as i think a combination of KH and KH2 would make an above brilliant game. The Organisation were brilliantly designed and backgrounded antagonists, but i thought the battling system was way too easy for KH2. I was able to beat Sephiroth, on expert mode, with the sweet memories keyblade at level 49... not first try, but the fact that i was able to do it is a bit ridiculous (This will sound like bragging, but its just me stressing how easy i found the game... no point bragging as i know somebody will have done even better than this).
and as awesome as the KH2 fighting looked, i found that actually, i was usually doing little more than pressing triangle and cross, occasionally throwing in a square if i felt adventurous, with no particular timing. KH1 i just felt more in control of the battle, Sora used that particular attack because of my timing, not because i pressed triangle once.

anyway, I'm a big KH fan, so i don't know why i spent a paragraph bashing it... Oblivion now. Oblivion was absolutely awesome. i was in awe when i first saw it about what... 4 years ago now (flip, its probably even longer ago xD)
it was a gorgeous game, with a story that i pretty much ignored at the time, but that i could do pretty much whatever i wanted on! now of course, it seems dated, the characters and graphics look kinda unnatural and creepy in the way they move. but i still love the game to bits and can always start a new one, experimenting with what i'll prioritize my skills in this time! (though i have almost run out... all that i can really do now is make someone who doesn't really fight and specialises in living a normal life getting cheap prices ¬_¬)

i've never played Demon souls, but i will eventually.
actually, i've changed my mind... not on demon souls, i'll still play that.

i reckon the best RPG i've played is Final Fantasy X. I've got so many hours on that game, yet i am still capable of playing on it and finding more to do. I love the battle system, i love all the characters and their backstories, i love the character development, i love playing Blitzball on it and the music track is awesome too. Its actually a game i've found that all of my friends can play/watch someone else play and enjoy themselves. obviously, not watching for an extended amount of time, but to be fair, thats pretty true for all games.

i really need to get this game somehow, it sounds brilliant. My only worry is the combat system being overly complex and too hard for me to work with, but i'm sure i'd even get used to that.

mass effect is an shooter with some very vague RPG elements.

Baldurs Gate 2, Fallout 2
As far as recent games go however... Dragon Age, but mostly because it was one of the few good rpgs lately.

I would agree up to 2009 when Dragon Age came out. Maybe it is the pretty graphics and technology blinding me. It speaks volumes for Baldur's Gate when after all this time it still stands up to Bioware's latest work.

I'm torn between Borederlands and Champions Online.

Shooting dudes until they catch fire is fun, but so is actually shooting fire.

Look at the eye, THE EYE! As you can see i like neverwinter nights. To be honest, most games made by bioware, bethesda, or obsidian i like.

But i tend to prefer Open world sandbox games.

Kingdom Hearts was pretty damn awesome when it came out, being one of the first successful open-range battle systems in an RPG. Earthbound and Mother 3 stand out for their story and uniqueness, as do the Mario RPGs (including the SNES and Paper Mario titles), and Dragon Age gives a fun sense of being too damn awesome to worry about much except Dragons, and letting you have plenty of spells to cause chaos with. So...Any of those.

Persona 4 is both the best RPG and the best game I've ever played. Unique setting, a story steeped in the occult, challenging and deep battle system and a cast of completely likable characters. The one thing that holds it back from being perfect is the hour and a half startup before your dungeon crawling actually begins.

Runner up and best WRPG I've played goes to Mass Effect 2.

Hmm, tough choice. I think it's a draw between three games:

Mass Effect
Oblivion
Kingdom Hearts II

Oh, and Grandia II has an amazing story.

And Dark Cloud is pretty good as well...

I am deadlocked between three
Oblivion for its super expansive world, seeming endless amounts of quests and great backstory but the leveling up did get confusing.
Fallout 3 was like a more modern copy of Oblivion, you felt apart of it and the RPG element was GREATLY improved.
Kingdom Hearts 2 for its seemliss transion of Disney and Final Fantisy characters together, story that did not get to confusing and the great combat system.

The combat is easy to learn, but hard to master. As it should be.
