I would agree up to 2009 when Dragon Age came out. Maybe it is the pretty graphics and technology blinding me. It speaks volumes for Baldur's Gate when after all this time it still stands up to Bioware's latest work.
I like Dragon age, one of my favorite rpg to come out in recent years. But I don't think it matches up to Baldur's Gate 2's sheer sense of scale and adventure, nor was the story nearly as interesting or the characters as 'alive'.
An example: the city in Dragon Age pretty much consists of one district and a few samey alleys. Compare that to Baldur's Gate 2 where the city was absolutely massive, itself larger than many full games, with underground tunnels, hidden secrets, multiple major and secondary plot, multiple districts each with their own themes, random encounters,
hundreds of NPC to meet and chat with, a day/night system where you'll encounter different things during different hours... good god, it just keeps going on and on! You can spend hours just exploring that city, and still not even see half of what there is to see.
I also dislike how the influence system worked in DA. It felt like I was just catering to the characters so I could increase their influence and unlock new abilities whereas in BG2 they interact with one another, they get into arguments, fight, and just generally feel more realistic in the way they interact with both the player and the other companions.
But that's just my view on the matter. I do know it's not nostalgia speaking though because I'm literally playing BG
right now, well, it's alt-tabbed. And it's just as good as I remember it.
