Wait a minute, I sort of enjoyed Gothic II. I'm currently waiting for Arcania, even though it'll likely be the worst action-RPG since Dark Messiah.
Eh, I probably won't even be able to run it on this primal trash compactor anyway.

But Baldur's Gate and BGII take the cake, the cream and the profiteroles.

I'm slowly starting to love a lot of RPGs that i used to hate.

Right now i'd say my favourite RPG is Fallout 3. I used to think it was boring, but then i found what Bethesda were best at. For exploring that game is the knees of the bee, it's great running into an innocent looking empty patch on the map and finding some awesome secret location that you'd never heard of.

Dragon Age is slowly becoming a favourite too, another game i used to hate. For a start i rerolled and chose some less conventional spells, which turned out to be the greatest decision ever. And finding out you could combine some spells to change their effects made that even better.
It's really nice to have a game where the conversations don't just consist of "good reply" and "bad reply" too, it's challenging just trying to make the right decision or judging which outcome you'd prefer.

Morrowind hands down. You get a huge, interesting world full of adventure to explore as you wish. What's there not to like?
Agreed 100%. Oblivion was actually my first Elder Scrolls, but I still prefer Morrowind.
Honestly? I preferred Bloodmoon. The atmosphere was solid, getting caught in a blizzard and swarmed by wolves was terrifying and transforming into a hulking lupine and committing Nordic genocide was more entertaining than the whole of Oblivion, Morrowind and Fallout 3 combined.
Yes, really.
Bloodmoon is really just an addon to be honest. I thought Tribunal was epic, but in the end, it was basically just a MASSIVE shopping centre. Still, having a pack rat, which can use scrolls, armed with hundreds of the best scrolls in the game was truly epic.

Didn't stop me from getting raped by those sewer-crawling knife-throwing bastards under the city though.

I didn't find anything new or particularly interesting in Tribunal besides that elf who dressed up in ebony armour and tried to force his mace down your throat.
I know that there was some complex plotline and a god that didn't want you levitating, but I decided that it would be more fun to don the ring of hircine and slaughter everyone.

Fallout 3 is my favorite recent rpg but back in the day I got super-addicted to Phantasy Star 4.

Grandia. The original.

Exploring the world is actually the primary POINT of the game, as this is why the hero, Justin, sets out in the first place. The funny and lighthearted story still manages to feel immersive and dramatic, though it's somewhat linear and you can't usually go back to most of the places you've already visited - but I always found it more exciting to see where I was going NEXT anyway.

Oh yeah, and the music is AWESOME!

Grandia II for eastern.

Dragon Age for western.
You damn well know that Ryudo is fucking hilarious.
Indeed, and that battle system never gets old after multiple playthroughs. I'll never understand why no one has yet to rip it off, so I wait for next installment in the series.

You know what? Super Mario RPG. I don't know why, but something about that game totally clicked with me.

The most enjoyment, immersion and all the good stuff I ever got out of an RPG was from Morrowind all those years ago. If you set some artificial parameters it might not be the best RPG in history, but it was for me at the time. And I still haven't found anything better.

How has nobody mentioned The World Ends With You? That's definitely my favorite RPG I've played.

Great story, fantastic visuals, a combat style that you really have to wrap your head around, and it was just really awesome overall.

That, or Mass Effect.

I played it, but I didn't like it that much. I really loved the style of the game though.

Start a level 1 character in Baldur's Gate 1 and take him/her all the way to Throne of Bhaal, and you'll never have to play another RPG again in your life.

I will also throw a shout-out to Planescape: Torment, made in a long gone era when game development companies still had awesome writers among their ranks (instead of merely mediocre and overrated).

Used to be in top 7 in the world at that game =D Haven't been on it for ages though...It just got too easy and repetitive.

The World Ends With You was literally the only JRPG I could from start to finish without tearing my hair out and proceeding to go back to Thief 2/Bloodmoon/Red Faction/Perfect Dark.
