KOTOR was my first RPG and the one that really got me into them. I still love the game; the only RPG that rivals it is Mass Effect. They're both games that I've really invested in, really immersed myself in. Unfortunately KOTOR set me up to prefer sci-fi RPGs over ones in a fantasy setting. This has made things somewhat difficult.

Oblivion- hell yes!!
Not just my favourite RPG, but my favourite game. EVER.
It may be getting old, but i can still play it and have fun with it.
Even after 140 + hours.

THIS is a tough one...I'm probably one of the most hard-core RPG junkies you'll ever meet, ever since King's Quest and Dungeons and Dragons for the Aquarius computer system (HUH? WHAT'S THAT?) Exactly...Old school. So here's the list of my favorites, although it will be painful to put them in order:
1. Final Fantasy VII. The first I really got heavily involved in.
2. Knights of the Old Republic
3. The Baldur's Gate series (BGII: Throne of Baal much better)
4. Fallout 3
5. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
6. Dragon Age: Origins
7. Neverwinter Nights
8. Neverwinter Nights 2
9. Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
10. Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords
11. Icewind Dale
And I will be purchasing this year Red Dead: Redemption and Fallout: New Vegas, which are both sure to be on my list.

Gah, I've played almost everything mentioned in this topic. Even Legend of Dragoon. ._.
Favorite RPG would be Suikoden II, followed by Planescape and KotOR.

I guess I can die in peace now.

Ok, true, it's the best-paced, most cohesive Final Fantasy, and probably the only one that managed to get its shit straight. The others are all over the place with genres, themes, etc., and pretty much all characters are obnoxious. On the other hand, here you have Vivi and Quina. Who the hell could ever hate them?!

I know this must have been mentioned a hundred times, but in my case definetly KOTOR.

Maybe that changes to Mass Effect once I get a computer that can actually run the bloody thing.

...ugh...

I hate to be the guy with the cliche answer but Final Fantasy VII is the one that brought out the strongest emotions in me (so far the only game to make me shed a tear). So artistically, it would be the best I've played.

Fallout 2, and Final Fantasy VII(I know, cliche) but those were the first video games I played. When I was 6th grade, my brother gave me those to play, since I had just gotten my cousin's old PS1, and my parents bought a new computer. So those were the games (rpg-wise, anyways) that kind of got me into gaming.

Wow. You had a lot to say :p

I agree with you but, while I have heard many people bashing the KH2 battle system, I found it far more engaging than its predecessor. It felt much more fast pace than the first and you gotta admit it looked pretty.

Another thing I loved was the highly improved Gummi Ship segments. The first game's ship levels were boring to the point of dreading each time you had to do it, the second game actually had me looking forward to the next high speed space adventure.

All in all, it felt far more in depth than the first and I gotta give them props for that.

Though I will disagree with you on Oblivion. Personally, I never saw what people were talking about when they referred to bad or dated graphics or unnatural character movements. Sure, they kinda move in a robotic march but it's a goddamn videogame filled with thousands of NPCs, what do you expect?

And I was actually debating over saying Final Fantasy X but the battle system...eh. I love the game to death and it's my favorite FF, but I'm not one for turn based combat but the fact that it kept my attention the whole way through despite my preference for real time fighting is amazing in it's own right. But still, I had to give it to Kingdom Hearts because only one other video game's story has been that engaging to me

Oh and definitely play Demon's Souls. It may start out slow and kick your ass countless times, call you "******," kick sand in your eyes while your down and make off with your girlfriend all at the same time but it'll keep you coming back for more until you finally best it and no game I've ever played has such a rewarding and satisfactory feeling when you finally beat a level.
i'm not bashing it as such, i love how cool some of the triangle attacks/QTE's are and yes, it did look amazing most the time. but i found that quite often if i stopped pressing anything, Sora would keep on going with whatever he was doing for another few seconds. as if he was just doing his thing whenever i pressed buttons, and as if i caught him out on being more in control than me. i do enjoy the fighting system, way above many other games (its easily one of the best real time ones i've had, as well as the most accessible), just i still say the first one was better (not to watch though, hell no, i'd much rather watch someone on KH2 xD)... maybe its just a player thing.

oh, of course, the improved gummy ships! haha, i forgot about those. yeah, that warp that you get on the first game was the second best part of the gummy ships (the first being designing them, i had a lot of fun with that :p). But i absolutely relished the gummy ship parts in the second one. so much fun :D

yeah, the second game had a lot more better aspects than the first, so i am hoping that whatever more could be milked from the series combines the best aspects from both of them.

Ah, i'm fine with Oblivion talking after the first 2/3 conversations, because then i find myself back inside the game... its just that first conversation really throws me, especially after playing other games where conversations run smoother/more naturally. I actually like the robotic movement though, it means i can figure out how to dodge certain attacks and can usually anticipate whats coming next :) its quick-flowing robotic movement too, meaning that i rarely notice it at all.

Yeah, everybody has their preferences. I'm a really weird gamer in that i seem to have none in the way of gameplay aspects. I like turn-based as much as i like real-time, i don't try compare the two as i view it like comparing food with drink. They are both in one broad category, but are both very different. What i do compare though is different turn-based things. I'm big on setting things up for the long run, but on the other hand i am also very fond of quickly having to make decisions based purely upon something the enemy has spontaneously done. so real time is also fun in that sense.
the only "turn based" games that i'm not fond of are the ones that try to immitate real-time. i'm not talking about Crisis Core style (thats pretty similar to KH actually), i'm thinking more the FFXII one, where you can run around whilst waiting for your turn to arrive. just frustrates me in so many ways, but this is long already without me complaining about that XD

I'll pick it up when i get the opportunity :)

EDIT: yeah, sorry, i'm like that when it comes to some forum posts. i used to love posting massive posts on an old forum (Bleachanime.org) as it passes time and is rather fun xD and all you do is express your opinions

VTM Bloodlines.

Flawed as it was, Bloodlines is the only cRPG ever to truly excel at anything.
That is the dialogue and VO, but not combat unfortunately.

Come to think of it I cannot point out the cRPG with the best combat or gameplay.
There's always some glaring flaw, or just overal shittiness getting in the way. If I want deep turn-based play I grab a strategy game. For shooting I'll play a proper FPS. RTT for RTT. Action games for melee button mashing.
Just goes to show how much gamers love the promise or the idea of an rpg to put up with worse gameplay.

Some nostalgia hit me when I was watching Emerald weapon killing in FF7. Such an interesting game it is my favorite JRPG.

Western. I don't really have that much experience on this side but I'll say Fallout 3. It was so cool to just wander around and always find something cool happening in the world. Haven't even checked every place yet.

Dragon age and Oblivion have to be my tops at the moment, but RDR is shaping up to look exceptional too.

P.S. Enchantment?
THIS! Ahhh I actually lol'd. I love Oblivion, I love the ability to customise anything you could ever want in minutes. Dragon Age: Origins was amazing as well, but I didn't find it as replayable as Oblivion or Morrowind.

I prefer Oblivion over Morrowind because I found it more immersive, just because of the graphics. I had a hard time getting lost in Morrowind's depths, because I was a bit put off by comparing it to Oblivion all the time (I played Oblivion first)

Morrowind by far. Then probably Final Fantasy IV. Morrowind because of the interesting world, depth of es lore and replay value. Final Fantasy IV solely because of the characters. OH and the magical flying moon whale...

most time spent at one time is oblivion, I had an addiction for a long time. but Zelda OoT is a game ive played over and over as well as still have a character from 5 years ago that I still play as and havent 100% yet (its those god dam gold skulltulas man, I forgot which ones a already have and end up going to the same place multiple times), and that is followed very closesly by Kotor, I and II (altough I wis that II was acually finished). Turned based is grandia, which I only just found and am currently playing, and its awesome, mostly because it doesnt take itself seriously and its really funny.

Rose Colored Lenses - KoTOR

*takes them off*

Mass Effect 2 I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of that game.
