Well, since we have a topic on the best series of this generation, I might as well put up a similar thread for people to talk about what they think was the best game of the generation, even stuff that was ported onto it (such as Okami), that has no sequels or prequels anywhere.

For starters, since I brought up Okami, that's probably a very major contender (well, the Wii version would be, since that's what's in this generation). Also, The World Ends With You, for its incredible story and unique gameplay that actually works, and from the independent side, VVVVVV (just play it already; it's only like five dollars.)

What do you guys think of this generation's best, and/or everyone else's taste in games?

Better hit the history books. For Lord Inglip!

Edit: Somebody just reminded me that Okami has a sequel. ...Thanks. I'd been trying really hard to forget that existed. So, yeah, even though it was brilliant, because of its not-quite-as-brilliant sequel, Okami has no place here. Sorry.

Edit 2: Maybe I should have made myself clearer. Things that are part of a single franchise, not including 'spiritual successors' like Perfect Dark to Goldeneye, cannot be in this list. Therefore, no GTA4, possibly no Red Dead Redemption, and defnitely not Oblivion. To everyone who was thinking of posting 'Oblivion' for the tenth time, please go back to primary/elementary school and learn how to read.

Edit 3:

I would contest your prereqs are to strict.

I haven't invested much thought into it, but I want to say Prince of Persia 2008- now before you go jumping on me about it's a franchise, I'd like to point a few things out. It's a radically different game from it's predecessors, and other than having an otherwise unnamed "Prince," it had almost nothing else in common with the Sands of Time series of games.
Read this. This has become official.

I'm gonna both annoy and elate thousands of escapists by saying Minecraft. It has very little flaws compared to other games, and as it's stand alone, and constantly improving upon itself, I guess it has infinite possibility thus far.

The graphics are perfect for the style, has an awesome fan base, pro mods, infinite replay value, infinite awe value.

When you boil it down, it trumps any other game this generation.

Well so far I would say Batman: Arkham Asylum. Yes I know it's not exactly standalone, and it has a sequel right around the corner, but you know what? It was such a good game about Batman, that it made everyone think "Why did it take this long to make a good game about Batman? Because, you know, BATMAN!"

This generation's best game? That's a hard one. Depending on the mood I'm in, either Mass Effect 2, Oblivion, or Bioshock, though I'm currently having great fun with Supreme Commander.

As for stand-alone games, I own relatively few. Likely Metro 2033, or Mirror's Edge.

Man, it's so difficult to think of a standalone game these days...

The first one I think of is Vanquish. While it was full of the usual retarded Japanese cheesiness and dialogue, the actual gameplay is unbelievably fun. Sliding along the floor with jets on your knees and elbows is one of the most gripping things I've done in a game.

On PC, I wanted to say Super Meat Boy, but there is actually a flash prequel that is playable on newgrounds.com. It's kind of a prototype for the real game so I dunno if it counts or not.

Also on PC: Frozen Synapse. Check it out.

Alpha Protocol, Nier, Vanquish...
Hard choices. Certainly loads more I haven't mentioned as well.

I see some people have missed the point and listed games that have sequels or prequels.
For me it is Heavy Rain and Alpha Protocol. Minecraft is also up there.

Seriously? How can anyone suggest that Alpha Protocol should be on this list?
I mean, I've played the game, I liked it quite a bit, but it was so friggin full of imperfections, from the cheesy Dialogue, to the mediocre Story, to tons of smaller Bugs etc.
It's not like I hate it, but it's just too flawed.
And havig said that, I guess I'm gonna have to play it once more, just to make sure, if I haven't missed out something essentially good in that game.

OT:
Would you count in Demon's Souls? there's this kind of a sequel in the making, allthough mostly it's being talked about as a "Spiritual Successor" and things like that...
Besides that, Okami was an awesome game. REALLY liked it.

Actually quite tricky Question.

Uh, hello? This is for best standalone game this year. Skyrim is part of Elder Scrolls, and Saints Row is a massive franchise. Neither belongs here. Lern2readkthxbai.

I know fanbois will be fanbois and every geek in geekdom is about ready to cum in their tighty whitey's but can we please not start passing judgement...especially to the degree of "Best game of the generation"...on games that you've not played at all.

OT - Going to have to go with "Limbo" for the Indie side of things and Demons souls for the Triple A side.

I was commenting on it for a different reason: you don't want it anywhere because Skyrim isn't out; I don't want it here, specifically, because it's not a new IP. But you are quite right. And I'm not going to buy Skyrim anyway. Xenoblade Chronicles for me instead. Sometime.

Borderlands. I might get a lot of flak for this one, but I fucking love that game and I've logged way too many hours into it.
