I just finished Mass Effect 3 and yes the ending was totally not what I expected.
So to take everyone's mind off this lets discuss the best endings in videogames.
For me;

Prince Of Persia The Two Thrones
Saint's Row The Third
Grand Theft Auto 4
Mafia 1

The worst ones;
Clive Barker's Jerhico

Bad but not the worst;
Metal Gear Solid 2(it really makes everyone involved look like the most stupid people on the planet blabering on about their plans while their enemies are standing right there fully armed and then Raiden looks stupid for not being given a choice in killing Solidus).

Why expect spoilers?

That's what spoiler tags are for, use them.

Recently?

Journey.

That last run towards the ending, those last 3 minutes of serenity...

It's just brilliant. If you have a PS3, pick up this game, or I will personally hunt you down and beat you to death with a badger.

I really enjoyed the ending for Infamous 2 (the good one; I haven't played evil yet). Heck, even Yahtzee admits to getting choked up at that one. Runner-up for me is Bioshock.

I personally think that Halo Reach had a pretty good ending, it reminded you that the game was called Halo REACH for a reason. But the best part? Despite the depressing tone of the ending, your actions actually saved all of Humanity...and all organic life in the galaxy.

For me, it was FFVIII.

SPOILER TIME (Hey, it came out over a decade ago):

You go through a lot of character development, you time travel and defeat your enemy and here you are, thrown in the middle of a time paradox that you just tried to end, only to find out you started it (Kinda). The game doesn't use a single word of dialogue to explain everyone's ending. You learn that Seifer finds peace at last away from Balamb garden. Laguna finally lets go of his past, your party members go back to the Garden and carry on with their lives, Squall and Rinoa finally end up together in what seems to me an original way to look at the horizon.
And the whole ending music was amazing too. Perhaps that's why I like the ending so much. Orchestra version of the game's theme? Check. Military-like theme that represents the rhythm of the game? Check. Subtle change of music into a peaceful medley that represents the characters' current state of mind? Check and check.

And then, FFX's ending was pretty good too. It's like you knew a happy ending could never come out of all of that, and yet you hoped there was one at the end. But there wasn't. But it kinda was. But not for everyone.

MGS3 was good too. It was a bittersweet end. And hell, the game had its own spy-like theme song. Gotta love that.

Bard's Tale, 3rd option.

Final Boss Choice:

Option 1:Side with side-A (boss fight with side-B)
Option 2:Side with side-B (boss fight with side-A)
Option 3:Don't side with anyone and walk away.(no boss fight, not my problem)

Love that ending!

Red Dead Redemption. Now that's a sad ending done right, complete with a badass epilogue. Infamous 2 also had a good ending.

I personally felt Final Fantasy IX had a fantastic ending.

I loved how everything came full circle with the play at the end. I loved how "Marcus" revealed himself to be Zidane.

"I beseech thee,wondrous moonlight, grant me my only wish!"

*throws cloak off and faces Princess Garnet*

"Bring my beloved Dagger to me!"

And then Garnet ran down to him, dropped her pendant, threw her crown on the ground and embraced him. And then the whole audience, including all the party members, (minus Vivi, although his "kids" were there) applauded.

The icing on that delicious cake of an ending was the song that played during the credits:

Add them all together, and you got one of the most satisfying and beautiful endings I've got the privilege to experience in a game.

Games like Shadow of the Colossus, MGS3, MGS4, and Journey I felt had great endings too.

I liked Red Dead Redemption and Arkham City, guess I like when a sad ending can be done without going back on your entire series and make the fans try to sue you for it... Oh yeah and Ghostbusters on NES. I felt so conglaturated after completing such a great game.

Despite some pretty major story-telling problems, I liked the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 quite a bit. The final boss fight with Liquid specifically.

Also: I'd like to second the mention of EarthBound above me... the end of that game was FUCKED up in an awesome way.

And whichever Armored Core game it was where you learn who Nineball is. I think it might have been the original, but it might have been Master of Arena. One of those.

I love robots <3

Seriously? Maybe I was just pissed off from that bloody escort mission :p

OT: The ending that made me feel best was Mass Effect 2 when I did my "No-one Left Behind Run." Massive endorphin rush XD

Rin's ending in Katawa Shoujo. It's my favorite ending of any "game"(even though it's a visual novel more so then a game, but w/e, you interact!)

As for game game that's a game, probably Persona 4. I would say Persona 3, but then I played it as fem MC, and it pissed me off instead(I was more attached to FeMC then Male MC.)

Infamous 1 and 2 good endings were spectacular.

Ahh Journey. Nuff Said.

Mass Effect 2 was a frightful and triumphant ending.

KH 1 was nice and bittersweet.

And despite my meh attitude towards Halo. Reach had a strong ending.

I have to agree with the topic creator on Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. That was awesome and I love me some Prince of Persia. I also really liked the ending to Dino Crisis 2.

if someone says mass effect 3, i am going to go jay and silent bob strike back style on them and personally come kick their ass.

OT: surprisingly enough after the last upper bit, the first mass effect is one of my favorite (the whole last part, hell you can find it on youtube, posting it here.)

^Bioware...this is why we are so freaking mad, you can make an ending like this, then 5 YEARS LATER, make a ending(s) not even 1/100th as great as that. *facepalm*
