Jade Empire hasn't been mentioned properly in the "best" category. It absolutely changed the player's motivation and made you look at the game in a whole different way in your second plathrough. The twist is of course
your master, who you're supposed to save, is actually the villain and lied about your backstory.

Now that I think about it...Bioware has a habit for near last second twists....Jade Empire, Dragon Age, even Obsidian got in with the twisting. I thought the
'Citadel being the catalyst' twist would have been enough
in ME3 but noooooo...
I thourght the catalyst was going to be shepard him/herslef...actually..pretty much the synthasis ending
I spent a good two hours trying to convince my brother that Shepard her/himself was the thing that would be needed to beat the Reapers, because what brought him/her back in ME2 was a shitload of Reaper tech and inside her/him was the key to beating the Reapers.

I even had good/bad endings lined up in my head and everything.

I would have taken the citadel part...but not the AI god. Anything but that...

Best: Grandia II
God is dead.
The heroes thought they were sealing the devil's remains, but they were actually preparing them for resurrection.
The Pope plotted the whole thing to bring forth the end of the world.

Worst: Shenmue II
Magical floating sword out of left field.
No sequel in sight.

A lot of people mentioning KotOR here.

That one never worked for me. It was well conceived and clever and all, but...

The nature of the player character completely undermined it.

"Really? That clueless dunce is the galaxy-threatening badass? That oblivious guy who spends the whole game blankly staring into the middle distance? The one with the approximate expressiveness of a fence post?"

"Well, there goes any interest I ever had in this Revan chap that everyone wouldn't shut up about."
When you think about it though, you did do a lot of impressive shit:

- Escaped the Endar spire under attack from the Sith
- Infiltrated swoop gangs
- Killed a Rancor
- Killed a Gamorrean slaver ring
- Won a swoop race with no prior knowledge of racing
- Led an assault on a Sith base
- Took down an intergalactic crime lord
- Escaped Taris
All without being a Jedi. Then you learn the Jedi ways in like...a week...

Also the lack of expressiveness on your characters point is the fact that you were
mind wiped by Bastila, so you're not going to be a giant personality. This was also the days before voiced protagonists and COMMANDHER SHEPURD so most RPG characters were like that, an avatar to project yourself onto pretty much.

I honestly though after the title crawl, Revan would just be some colourful background information, sometimes referenced but never directly involved in the story that much, so the twist was much greater.

laughably bad twist is The Last Remnant

[spoiler/] One of your characters is killed by the main bad guy, then her daughter turns up who looks just like her now killed mother but a touch younger and is almost identical in terms of how she plays and dresses oh and her name is her mothers name but with a the 2nd on the end. She dosent comment on her mothers death either and the others seem not to dwell on it. Basically its the beerfest plot twist but they have tried to do it seriously.
One of my favourite plot twists is in Shadow Hearts Covenant

[spoiler/] there is no plot twist the curse was in fact incurable and you die
I was waiting to see how they were going to cop out on the story as well but they didnt which I liked.

Worst twist
Well twist I suppose turns out you are some kind of superhuamn brought back to life by evil AIs intent on blanketing the world in permanent winter, and something about indigo children, it just loses the plot about half way in

Best Twist
Would you kindly! never saw that coming and the whole sequence and the way they revealed it was great!

This game gets a lot of criticism but I still consider it one of my favourites. That being said, the revelation that the Vault you spent the entire game reaching did exist but actually had a world-eating monster inside it was dumb as spit.
I had the same initial response, but if you think about it, it's kind of clever. See, the legends of the vault only describe great power within, and through retellings and human greed, that message was twisted to become a tale of the universe's lottery. Turns out, that great power was actually something we would have been better off leaving alone (Pandora's box, anyone?). That said, the developers really dropped the ball in creating a satisfying conclusion. You save Pandora (and possibly the galaxy), but you helped create the mess in the first place, so all you've really done is set everything back to square one. Pandora is still a shithole, you get very little loot, and there isn't anything substantial left to do in the game, unless you count DLC.

Well...

Red Dead Redemption. Game's a masterpiece on its own.

But for an ACTUAL dictionary-defined twist... I don't know, would you kindly give me one to use?

KOTOR and Bioshock in recent memory.

I don't think ME3 counts as a twist but it's terribad enough to be here.

well the worst I can think of is not from a game but a movie.
Knowing.
Aliens. The powers that allowed the random humans to tell the future and are behind the list of numbers were... Aliens. What. The. fuck. As soon as I saw the ship descending through the clouds I turned the movie off and never touched it again.
And the best? Hmmm... I actually can`t think of any good ones. But the worst game one is probaly in Shadow the Hedgehog.
Black dooms blood is in Shadow? What? Uh... Okay?
Thats not the worst bit, and honestly, who gives a fuck about spoilers for this movie anymore.

Essentially, at the end the aliens kidnap the kids to have them Adam and Eve a new Earth.

Its spoiler in brackets, then what you want to spoiler then /spoiler in brackets, DONE!

Heavy Rain had a very good one with someone being a murderer that I saw coming. Best damn twist if you didn't see it coming.

I never actually thought about the ending because I didn't actually play it for it's story, but that's pretty clever.

Worst twist ever? MGS2 Vamp is still alive! Again! Fuck you Vamp. Your Diabolus Ex Machina bullshit is not welcome around these parts...
I've said it once, and I'll say it again: This does not qualify. The game had clearly established at this point that Vamp can survive practically anything, including wounds that would kill anyone else. They're not at all inconsistent with this plot point, you can see him walking around later in the streets of Manhattan.

Plus, this is Metal Gear! Did you hear a death speech? Me neither! :p

Best twist: Honestly, the one I absolutely never saw coming was FoxDie. That blew my mind.
The ending of MGS3, that feeling of 'Oh shit, they used me.'

Best - BioShock. Doesn't even need to be said. Or maybe Arkham City:

Clayface pretending to be the cured Joker. It was subtly sign-posted throughout the game, but when it's revealed at the end, I still got a surprise. That game was just full of great things!

Worst - Resident Evil 5. IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT JILL WAS STILL ALIVE, IT WASN'T A SURPRISE!

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within

You becoming the sand wraith, and also the prince being the one to create the sands

Really loved the story in this game, almost makes up for the tedious backtracking the game forces you to do.

Best twist is gaming or anything actually;

KotOR

You are Revan, who just moments before the start of the game, was the biggest bad guy in the universe.
I can think of one that tops that.

Planescape: Torment

Through the whole game, you know that one of your previous incarnations was a real bastard, most of your party is only with you because that previous incarnation had manipulated them into serving him forever. (literally, because your character is immortal... but occasionally gets hit with a case of amnesia, and thus develops a new personality) However, there is one character in particular, the ghost of one of your former companions, Deionarra, who really gets to you when you find out. In that previous "practical" incarnation; she fell in love with you, and you deliberately and maliciously manipulated that bond to send her to her death just so that she could spy on the Big Bad for you.

I got two for the best

Assassin's Creed II

Theres a hologram in the sistine chapel that knows whats going to happen. Did not expect that.

No More Heroes

That Irish guy who wasn't in it for long, yeah he's Travis's brother. Out of nowhere, and it was kick ass.

I can't think of a game for worse twist, but I'll name a movie.

The Village

Turns out, most of it was completely pointless
