I'm really hesitant to touch this issue with a 20ft pole because I'm no expert on eastern and western culture, but here's my two cents.

I agree with what Bethesda is saying, that most WRPGs are more realistic (and those that are pure fantasy are more likely to occur) but at the same time I disagree. We look at western RPGs and since we're westerners our critique for their realism is biased. Doesn't anybody think that perhaps in Japan the JRPG genre is viewed under different critique and possibly considered more realistic by their standards?

Also, the Japanese are usually into different things than us westerners. Some of the things they find interesting or culturally influential are viewed as weird in western cultures. This translates to games I'm sure. They may consider an aspect of a game to be amazing and thought provoking where we consider it just plain strange.

At least in JRPG's the NPC's look like people and not mannequins from hell who all sound the same.

And how the hell can a fantasy game be considered "realistic"?

Isn't that, like, an oxymoron or something?

my reaction is "Who cares?" (that's not directed to you OP it's to the article) because last I checked RPGs have fantasy in them the only one that I can think of that was close to realistic was alpha protocol and even then it wasn't that realistic

I didn't know some of you were so reliant on realism in a fantasy game. o.o And in direct contrast, I didn't know some of you were afraid of realism in a fantasy game. o.o

One eye open, one eye closed and plucked out? I'll take my Persona 4 and my Mass Effect at the same time, thank you. (These are among the best in the field, right? Because FFXIII certainly wasn't the top of my JRPG experiences)

Todd Howard is a fucking idiot. Why are people still surprised when he decides to open his mouth and say something pants-on-head retarded? It's a fact of life man: Jack Tretton is a douche, Bobby Kotick is a prick, Todd Howard is a brazen moron, and the sky is blue.

Both WRPGs and JRPGs are (generally) totally and absolutely unrealistic. WRPGs might have the tiniest bit more grounding in reality, but that's not equal to realism or being realistic. Does that mean I can say Serious Sam is more realistic than DOOM since you run around Egypt? Of course fucking not... that's just absolutely silly. In all seriousness, when you play a game that allows you to absorb multiple hits from a claymore with no outward signs of trauma, and proceed to instantly heal all your wounds by taking a nap, then you really aren't allowed to say anything about "realism".

Fantasy RPGS in general are all just stone cold fuck nuts. I think most JRPGS take place in the far future, which to them is basically a "everything is possible in the future so go insane" pass. The past is not that easy and you have to make the thing at least somewhat believable. The future? Nobody ever knows what will happen unless of course it's an announced game or movie release. So basically it's a huge gray area where any number of space time continuum rainbow dragons could be hiding. JRPGS simply take that and turn the crazy dial up to OVER 9 THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND! and start making characters fly through the air with giant swords and hair naturally colored like cotton candy.

This seems like an arguement between JRPG fanboys, and sensible people.

No cock, has anyone ever seen a JRPG? Western RPG's at least try and have actual humans, not mutants with huge eyes, hair that attacks people, and the ability to hold a sword twice the size of them that also is half gun.

Why is everyone Arguing about realism. If games were Realistic they would Dull.

Can you Imagen a game where your only goal was to work a 9 till 5 shift's, in an office, answering the phone, in real time, Every Day, except for Saturday's and Sundays, where you sit at home on your computer watching videos on the escapist and arguing about realism in games.... Yeh, dosn't sound fun.

Now if you will excuse me The Emperor has just died and given me a magical amulet, so im off with My crazy hair and large sword made out of water to find moon in the shape of a heart on my golden Chicken. And to make matters worse the Apocalypse has just happened, how frustrating. :D

So that's somehow better than people who hold eye contact like their life depends on it and stand in the same general area for every day of their life, people having the same conversations with other people with the exact same voice, being able to absorb multiple blows from medieval weaponry that would probably maim or disable someone in one hit, naps healing huge gashes and other battle wounds that should probably be fatal, fighting creatures from MYTHOLOGY, and FUCKING MAGIC?

Both WRPGs and JRPGs are batshit bonkers when you look at things objectively. Just because one has a little more grounding in reality doesn't really mean either is realistic. You might be able to say that means WRPGs are "more realistic" because of that tiniest pretense of being grounded in reality, but it's not like that is saying anything at all. The pot is trying to say the kettle is less black than it, people.

And for the record, before you call me a fanboy, I hate JRPGs and only really play WPRGs.

They are more realistic. While both are extremely otherworldly WRPGs can be more relate able to events past and present and feature more realistic character designs[footnote]Maybe not in looks but in personality.[/footnote] Also they usually use a more believable setting. Then there's the whole weapons bigger than the character thing, but there is no need to go any deeper into that than just mentioning it.

When he says "realistic" he's not referring to the likelihood of dragons. They feel more grounded. JRPGs, generally, feel way more "out there".

Plus, their characters look ridiculous.

Read the article and then read my post.

*Waits*

Oh? Done? Okay.

ARE YOU BLOODY KIDDING ME?!

A huge number of WRPG's are Tolkienesque skips through fantasy town number 85736826, trying to stop an evil cult, some evil wizard, or just a bunch of assholes trying to be douchebags.

Of course, there are games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 that COULD happen but seem somewhat unlikely. But I kind of take it personally that Bethesda, who brought us Oblivion and Hunted: The Demon's Forge and are bringing us Skyrim (no offense to the games mentioned.... Except for HTDF. I quite enjoy Oblivion and will thoroughly enjoy Skyrim) are saying that Western RPGs are more realistic than JRPG's. Have you ever heard of Persona?!

I will admit, JRPG's are a bit out there. But Westerns are also pretty out there. I'd put them on the same level on the Lunacy Meter.

What do you all think?
So, are you counting out the 20-foot long swords, summoning massive dragons, being hit 2643890 times before anything happens, flying, less-armour-means-more-protection, flying steampunk ships, Godzilla, Giant robots...
Need I say any more?

Why the hell should a fantasy game be realistic? That's fucking stupid.
Also, why the hell does hair matter? Seriously? If you bring up hair as a valid argument against any game that you're being fucking stupid and using an aging stereotype. Square Enix are not the only JRPG developer out there.

I like WRPGs, I am looking forward to Skyrim as much as the next guy, but what's with this pointless shit?

If we are generalizing, as he said he was, then yes WRPG's are more realistic than JRPG's. Not many magic-powered airships flying demon training, gun-sword hybrid wielding children about to stop evil magics and obviously evil nutters.
That is not indicative of quality, it's just an assessment of style. While I was clearly mocking in my airship description that was simply to illustrate how unrealistic it is.

At least fantasy rpg's are based on an actual time period and it's mythos. I don't recall a period in history where we all summoned giant monsters or rode around on golden chickens.
I approve of your avatar but I must say this:

I don't recall any time in history in which some guy got thrown in jail and had gotten asked by an emporer to find his son and give him a magic amulet that would seal closed the gates of a hellish type plane that would at one point in the game send out a giant monster to fuck everyone's shit up.
That sounded plausible, right up until "magic amulet".

If you had written that statement from the other perspective, it doesn't take as long.

I don't recall any time in history where a earth-energy-infused super soldier fought a scorpion robot with his Mr. T impersonater buddy (the one with a gun for a hand), after riding a train into a giant factory that steals the earth's lifeforce.

In case you were wondering, it only took until earth-energy-infused super soldier.
Pretty much this :p
