So you haven't seen a JRPG in your life then have you.
Most of the games in my library are JRPG's. Have you seen a Western RPG?
Well you have to admit, I've never seen a WRPG that had characters that don't look like they could lift a pebble, yet somehow easily lift a sword ten times longer and five times thicker than they are. I've also never seen WRPGs use spells that involve blowing up the entire solar system yet inexplicably result only in doing about 100 damage to your entire party. Still it's a rather pointless statement as all it does is anger people over something I never recall RPGs striving for in the first place.

Theres just a helluva lot of Jrpg hate around not just in this thread but in general. I like the Fallout series but cannot stand Oblivion, I just found it boring most of the time. Just because alot of western rpgs are more "realistic" and familiar i.e their settings are medieval fantasy most of the time and thusly more familar to a western audience hence the term western rpg, doesn't automatically make them superior to japanese rpgs. If I'm honest I think Jrpgs are more fun because they're not limited to one setting which most western developers can't seem to move away from. The Japanese aren't afraid to try something new with different settings. It can range from being set in space, on world with a american western feel, being pirates but sky pirates or just being deeply in the occult and just pure mind-fuckery. Sure its not realistic but isn't that the point of a role-playing game to begin with?!
As for the "angsty teenagers" thing that keeps getting thrown around to discuss the traditional Japanese rpg protagonist, I'm sorry, thats utter bullshit. Of course, people say this because they seem to think every jrpg is Final Fantasy, particular number 7. I can think of a crap-ton of jrpg protagonists that are nothing like the "angsty" type. The protagonists from Persona's 3 and 4, Ness from Earthbound, Vyse from Skies of Arcadia, Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia, Laharl from Disgaea, Issac from Golden Sun....need I go on?
Let me ask this? Sure you may say its bad for about 90% of Jrpgs to feature young kids as the heroes of the stories but are you saying you've NEVER imagined yourself as a hero saving the world when you were younger?!

Now I'm getting off topic, sorry.

Anyways, yeah, seems abit like Bethesda having a needless stab as someone's already said. Ultimately its personal taste. You can like whatever you want to like, no-one's really gonna change that for you.

God, I find the vibrant art styles, enthusiastic characters, and over the top displays of power a breath of fresh air.
Yeah, pretty much this. I get tired of the constant grimdark and earthy tone in most of the WRPG's nowadays. Not that it makes me automatically hate a game, just that when I play a nice, colorful JRPG, it's good change of pace.

I don't have much experience with JRPGs, I dislike Turn-based combat too much, but I'm relatively familiar with FFXIII and this was one of my complaints. The entire premise was just way too far out there to believe. It ruined my immersion.

In western RPGs, as in real life, a full grown man can easily ***** slap a mouthy teen with bad hair. It is the otherway around in JRPGs.

In all seriousness, RPGs are not realistic; hence the dragons, orcs, magic etc. I didn't play alpha protocol but that grabs me as an attempt for a more realistic RPG.
You can turn invisible in that game.

Realistic is confusing in this context. The WRPG is more focused on simulation than JRPG's are and I think thats the real take away.

Read the article and then read my post.

*Waits*

Oh? Done? Okay.

ARE YOU BLOODY KIDDING ME?!

A huge number of WRPG's are Tolkienesque skips through fantasy town number 85736826, trying to stop an evil cult, some evil wizard, or just a bunch of assholes trying to be douchebags.

Of course, there are games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 that COULD happen but seem somewhat unlikely. But I kind of take it personally that Bethesda, who brought us Oblivion and Hunted: The Demon's Forge and are bringing us Skyrim (no offense to the games mentioned.... Except for HTDF. I quite enjoy Oblivion and will thoroughly enjoy Skyrim) are saying that Western RPGs are more realistic than JRPG's. Have you ever heard of Persona?!

I will admit, JRPG's are a bit out there. But Westerns are also pretty out there. I'd put them on the same level on the Lunacy Meter.

What do you all think?
WRPG(Oblivion):
JRPG(Disgaea 4):

I'd say that pretty much sums my opinion on the matter up. Not really for or against either, but to say that WRPGS are as crazy as JRPGS is about as wrong as you can get.

[sub]WHAT A BUNCH OF DOUCHES!!![/sub]
What?
[sub]HAVE YOU EVEN PLAYED FALLOUT 3?! HOW ARE SUPER MUTANTS MORE REALISTIC THAN 12 YEAR OLDS WIELDING 10 FOOT SWORDS?!![/sub]
I think it's more than that. I think they're trying to say that a man trying to survive in a post-apoctalyptic world or a Mage trying to stop the coming of a daedric prince seem more realistic than sulky teenages saving the world.
[sub]HOW?!!![/sub]
Well, I'd say the biggest difference is age. Every JRPG I've played the teenagers are always making deep, complicated desicions and that always seems out of character. As a teenager I don't think I ever had the complexity needed to be in an JRPG. I probably still don't.
[sub]YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT!!![/sub]
Oh, come on then, what makes a JRPG more realistic than a WRPG?
[sub]..................[/sub]
Exactly what I thought.
[sub]THE WAY THEY TALK!![/sub]
What?
[sub]IN JRPGS THE CHARACTERS ALWAYS HAVE SOME MOVEMENT WHEN THEY ARE TALKING. THEY DON'T STAND DEAD STILL AND WATCH YOU THEY WHOLE CONVERSATION.[/sub]
Thats more of a game mechanic thing, I think Betheseda knows that people don't do that in real life.
[sub]ARE YOU SURE?!!![/sub]

I like both JRPG's and Western ones but i drew the line in Fallout when i shot a human point blank in the face with a handgun only for him to survive the whole ordeal and that's when i knew to put the game down after having found more horrid bugs, oh and also after seeing FFX's laugh scene that put me off the game for a while.

But really do we need to have this discussion because we all know companies like Bethesda are like little schoolboys in the yard known as the gaming market throwing insults at each other and claiming they are the best studio or the highest grossing company etc.

Yeah, WRPG's tend to be more realistic than JRPG's, but that doesn't actually mean they're realistic. And Realism isn't necessarily a positive thing, so it absolutely doesn't matter.

he's right!
Final Fantasy is realisti- oh wait
Persona is realisti- oh wait
Dragon Quest makes a whole lot of sen- ah screw it!

Its very hard to defend the realism of games where mostly the contestants stand on opposite sides of a room and take turns running to the other side and punching the other in the gut when compared to non-stop action of WRPG combat.
Its hard to find realism in the word "fantasy" but I would think that Bethesda was talking about actual gameplay rather than environments and story

Yeah. WRPGs are more realistic. So what?

As Ed Boon of Mortal Kombat once stated, "we don't pay for realism. Realism is boring. We play and pay to escape reality."

The more fantastical the better, at least for me.

They're right when the setting is more 'realistic' you are able to relate to the characters much more, maybe others can relate to aliens or some shit. I sure can't.

If you go on about realism in games, then you're being a fucking nerd.

I'm sorry I had to go there, but they're games, they always will be, and they don't have to be anything else.

Why even compare cRPG and jRPG? Not the same genre.

Mr. Howard called Rockstar?s Western Sandbox game, Red Dead Redemption ?a great RPG?.
Love this quote. It's great how everyone tosses the term RPG everywhere in this day and age so everyone can feel smarter for playing an RPG.

Too bad RPGs are long dead. I miss them.

At least fantasy rpg's are based on an actual time period and it's mythos. I don't recall a period in history where we all summoned giant monsters or rode around on golden chickens.
I approve of your avatar but I must say this:

I don't recall any time in history in which some guy got thrown in jail and had gotten asked by an emporer to find his son and give him a magic amulet that would seal closed the gates of a hellish type plane that would at one point in the game send out a giant monster to fuck everyone's shit up.
Are you seriously asking this?

Part of the appeal of Jrpgs is their break from realism. The whole anime style. Bethesda basically said the obvious and you're having a cow? Why? Care to give us examples of the great amounts of realism in the Final Fantasy series or Disgaea?

This isn't something to argue, it just is and is intrinsic to the appeal of the games and styles. Geez dude, is there something shitty going on in your life that you have to pick this fight?

Yeah sure. Isn't it a staple of Wrpg's to bring a sense of realism to your environment? Where as Jrpg's tend to be on the more fantastic side of things.
