Well, jRPGs tend to be more heavily stylized.
So it's correct in that sense.
But it really depends on the games you compare.
And really, does it matter in the least?

So, I happened to look at the OP's gamertag where it showed that he did not even play Braid. In fact, his XBL profile revealed he has only played TWO JRPGs this gen. Neither of which he seemed to get more than five minutes into. Also, his PSN account is only a level three. So, I'm noticing a similar pattern.

So, the answer here is obvious: I see here the OP loves Persona 3 and 4, but has a distaste for current gen JRPGs even though he wants to love them.

My advice? Play some games before you make a ridiculous thread such as this as your massive participation with no education into the current world of RPGs has ruined all your credibility and has besmirched a topic that has probably deserved some attention.

TL;DR- OP has no credibility to talk on such a topic and is pulling out the popular Persona name more than Yahtzee pulls out Silent Hill 2

I advise reading this post so we can end thread quickly
You silly or something?
A great many things could happen to have him not have that many games on his account and it doesn't take away from the discussion.

I've never seen a fight where two sides stood at one side of the room and took turns running up and slapping each other in the face.

JRPs are incredibly unrealistic and I find them boring because they are so blatantly unrealistic. WRPGs are better in the fact that they COULD happen, but only if shit hit the fan, which it sometimes does.

Read the article and then read my post.

*Waits*

Oh? Done? Okay.

ARE YOU BLOODY KIDDING ME?!

A huge number of WRPG's are Tolkienesque skips through fantasy town number 85736826, trying to stop an evil cult, some evil wizard, or just a bunch of assholes trying to be douchebags.

Of course, there are games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 that COULD happen but seem somewhat unlikely. But I kind of take it personally that Bethesda, who brought us Oblivion and Hunted: The Demon's Forge and are bringing us Skyrim (no offense to the games mentioned.... Except for HTDF. I quite enjoy Oblivion and will thoroughly enjoy Skyrim) are saying that Western RPGs are more realistic than JRPG's. Have you ever heard of Persona?!

I will admit, JRPG's are a bit out there. But Westerns are also pretty out there. I'd put them on the same level on the Lunacy Meter.

What do you all think?
WRPG's are more realistic than JRPG's.

However, that really isn't saying much.

WRPGs may not be realistic but at least they follow basic laws of the universe like gravity and momentum, or use science to explain the defiance. It seems JRPGs treat those 2 forces as though they don't exist, with flying combo moves, levitation, a complete lack of falling damage and the ability to stay still in air while exerting forces on other objects.

At least fantasy rpg's are based on an actual time period and it's mythos. I don't recall a period in history where we all summoned giant monsters or rode around on golden chickens.
I approve of your avatar but I must say this:

I don't recall any time in history in which some guy got thrown in jail and had gotten asked by an emporer to find his son and give him a magic amulet that would seal closed the gates of a hellish type plane that would at one point in the game send out a giant monster to fuck everyone's shit up.
That sounded plausible, right up until "magic amulet".

If you had written that statement from the other perspective, it doesn't take as long.

I don't recall any time in history where a earth-energy-infused super soldier fought a scorpion robot with his Mr. T impersonater buddy (the one with a gun for a hand), after riding a train into a giant factory that steals the earth's lifeforce.

In case you were wondering, it only took until earth-energy-infused super soldier.
Honestly, the examples we're coming up with would make life a hell of a lot more awesome.

WHY CAN'T LIFE BE MORE LIKE GAMES?!
Like the games where the entire world's nuked or the ones where the world has no technology more advanced than swords?

Or like the ones with trains and airships powered by the very earth's lifeforce?

This is pretty ridiculous. You obviously preffer your games to be not very realistic. You obviously also prefer JRPGs. So why the fuck would you get upset about someone saying JRPGs are less realistic?

Wow, twelve pages. I didn't read more than a half dozen posts, but yes, I agree with Bethesda. There are some "realistic" fantasies, but JRPG comes nowhere near that. It's as if the developers try to be as fantastical and crazy as possible - not necessarily a bad thing, but beside the point here.

And for all thou nay-sayers saying nay about realism in Fantasy I think the point is less about imitating reality and more about keeping plausibility in check, to make the events and choices you make or witness more adaptable to a real moral. If a game threw out basic tenants of reality you would probably find it very hard to relate to the real world. Its better to base key decisions around real paradoxes like "the needs of the many vs the needs of the few" than decisions are not related to real things. Games can be great tools for exploring moral dilemmas and you need a world of realistic rules and basic laws to keep that link between that world and ours open.

Ex: Say for example an RPG has a fantastical element where people cant die, but instead are reborn upon the death of their vessel. Then you are confronted with a decision of saving a handful of world leaders or a large number of peasants. The peasants didn't deserve anything, but the death of the leaders may result in the deaths of many more by civil war. But when this fantastical element of delayed death is added there is no longer any relation to real world dilemmas, as it takes place in a world with very different rules.

They can range from vastly more realistic to only slightly more realistic, but even the slightest bit still qualifies as "more realistic." And based on the random things in JRPGs, I'd have to agree with Bethesda here.

Good ol' Bethesda inciting a flame war between JRPG and WRPG fans on which is more realistic. Of all things.

Love hearing yahtzee's description of JRPGs repeated ad nauseum.

Neither are realistic. Yes a lot of newer JRPGs are ridiculous but my DA:O character is running around in full plate armor and a great sword with nary a care in the world so WRPGs hardly have the high ground.

Honestly both FF:T and the early FFs were set in a medieval setting just like all WRPGs ever. At least JRPG's kind of mix up their setting.

At the end of the day both are fantasy/sci fi so why are we arguing about realism? The whole point is escapism.

Since when did we put a standard upon our fantasy RPGs?, western or not.

It would be outright boring to see the same thing over and over again. I must admit that I enjoy my typical Tolkienesque RPG, but a little change of pace would be quite refreshing and I don't care if it's not realistic at all.

I like Bethesda and I'm drooling over Skyrim, but seriously guys?, since when The Elder Scrolls became realistic?, my main character was always an argonian and I will make an argonian in Skyrim, since when it was considered "realistic" to see a talking reptile?, or killing dragons for that matter?. What a bunch of pricks. And I still want my Skyrim.

This has to be the most irrelevant point a studio ever spat out to the press. Of course WRPG's are more realistic; the characters don't dress like they escaped from some rainbow circus in the future and talk like super-autistic manchildren.

this is a silly argument, but for the sake of boredom i'll bite

JRPG's certainly seem to be more out there and have weirder things in them. WRPG's tend to be more grounded, and tend to be more real time, whereas JRPG's tend to be more turn based. i suppose that you could say semi real-time action is more realistic than turn based action

A lot of people here apparently were not taught what i was taught by my English teacher. Realism is basicly the glue that holds fantasy together.Without any realism it just falls apart. Which I believe to be true.(Im not saying this as "THIS IS THE WORD OF GOD." Im just saying this is what i thinK)

This thread went from a statement that seemed like "I'm just saying" to an argument about two different sides trying to insult the other. Or actually, the WRPG fans seem to be doing most of the insulting.....

I'm bored with this thread. Bye bye.
