Oh and finally - I love both Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2. I like both companies.

Yes, you too, can like more than one thing. And if you don't, you don't. Why do you care if someone likes something you don't? They don't force you to play the game now do they?

Play what you want to play, and don't play what you don't want to play, and let everyone play what they want! It's simple kids, let's all SING ALONG:

"You stay on your side
I'll stay on mine,
You live your life,
And I'll live mine,

We can a-a-a-alllll get aloooooooooong!"

Lore isn't the problem; it's the sheer shallowness of their characters.
Just like with a movie, you need a (at the very least) a good script and good actors to craft a compelling performance.
Bethesda can't do that because they spread their content too thin. It's a tradeoff of making the world as immense as it is.
I wouldn't say that is always the case, i was quite taken back when dad dies in fallout 3, perhaps it was just the soothing voice of Liam Neeson which did it for me though hehe.

You can stuck on any of the waist-high boxes in ME2 and you'll have to start the level over or from the last save point because you can't simply walk off.
I found trying to take a corner while running down a ramp often left me stuck on the railing as well.

And of course, there's no 3D game in existance where there isn't the possibility of getting stuck in the geometry.

I'd be surprised if most people knew the difference between Infinity Ward and Treyarch to this topic is kind of moot. Besides good companies can occasionally make a bad game.

Whereas in Oblivion I was impatient for Emperor Patrick Stewart to die so I could get to stealing shit and stabbing people.

What do people have against Jade Empire, anyway?

You know... apart from it using the same story formula Bioware has used since KOTOR (or was it Neverwinter Nights? Whichever came first).

...I love both studios. Just putting that out there. It isn't a damn binary coice between one or the other.

Well I don't know where this is but I would still vote for Bioware, because look at what Bethesda did do. Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas which they clearly are involved in even if they aren't the primary developers. Good games yes, but releasing them in the sorry, buggy states they did is just disgusting. Especially the PS3 versions, which start locking up more and more frequently the longer you play (because your save file gets bigger).

Meanwhile, Bioware makes games that are just as good as what Bethedsa does in terms of fun playing them, AND they aren't bug-ridden shitholes at launch (I sure didn't find any in Mass Effect 2 at launch anyway, and I haven't heard horror stories of Bioware's other games either). So while I like both, I like Bioware a hell of a lot more.

Let that be a lesson to all companies - even if you don't make bad games, publishing them can hurt your reputation.
And it should... okay not your reputation as a developer but if we started tarring and feathering some publishers for the shit they actually picked up the tab on maybe things would improve.

I voted against bethesda, but that's solely due to the number of glitches that can be found in any of their games.

As everyone has inevitably seen, there is a massive Bio vs Beth poll running. And, as usual, everyone is attacking Bethesda with misinformation. So here we go:

Myth: Bethesda made all those terrible (and they are) games like WET, Rogue Warrior, etc.
Fact: Bethesda Game Studios has only made TES and FO3 in recent years. So those terrible games are published by Zenimax, the publishing arm masquerading under the Bethesda name. That's like saying Bioware is terrible because they "made" Spore (EA published it).

Myth: Bethesda's pumping out too many games lately. They are all going to be awful.
Fact: Bethesda (BGS)didn't make NV, and isn't making Hunted, Rage, or Brink.

Myth: Bethesda's games don't have a backstory/story and have no depth.
Fact: The Elder Scrolls games have an insane amount of lore. Their lore people can't even keep track of everything. See the Imperial Library: http://www.imperial-library.info/

That's about it right now. I just can't stand misinformation but I still adore Bioware, so don't take this as an attack :)

In my opinion skyNET and Call of Cthulu: Four corners of the Earth remain the only GREAT games Bethesda have developed. Most of the games they've produced have been pretty bad.
I liked Fallout 3 but it had some issues, and Oblivion was just broken in soooo many ways.

When the fuck did this thread become Bethesda -v- BioWare? Or more importantly, when did this thread become Mass Effect 2 -v- Fallout 3? People are silly.

I completely agree with Atmos Duality - they're spread too thin. I've played Oblivion and I'm playing New Vegas right now. I know the latter is not made by Bethesda, but both games are apparently working on the same engine and suffer from the same problems. The worlds are huge and are filled with a gigaload of NPCs, but the characters look too similar, often dozens of them share the same voice actor and the interactions are too short to create distinct personalities. Putting huge amounts of lore in books like they do in the Elder Scrolls series is pointless, IMHO. If you've got good plot material then put it in the game, make the player a part of it. I don't want a history lesson, I want to MAKE history.

Then there's the player character. In New Vegas you at least have some dialogue options to choose from. In Oblivion your character rarely ever speaks at all, and basically your choices concerning your character are limited to answering the question "how do you want to kill stuff?".

Bioware games beat Bethesda's easily when it comes to character design, depth of plot and actual role-playing, but the huge open worlds, item collecting and customizing and leveling in Elder Scrolls and Fallout have their appeal, too. I guess the latter are simply less "hardcore RPG" and more "action-RPG", like e.g. Diablo. Which is not in itself a bad thing. Each to his own.

My $.02:

They BOTH USED to make great games.
NOW THEY both make meh games.

Bethesda wins it for me though. From what I've read I'd assume that most people posting in this thread probably havn't even played the majority of either's catalog.

I fucking hate Bethesda. I couldn't stand Oblivion or Oblivion 2 (and so the backlash begins). However, I fucking love Splash Damage and enjoy some id games, so I'm looking forward to Brink and (skeptically) Rage.
