Mostly what I'm seeing people hating on (get off the haterade) is sequel bating. If you will recall, more games do that then we give credit to, especially good ones everyone loves, Mass Effect 2 did it, but subtly was the key.
While I have no issue with Sequel bating, while everyone else in the world does, is it really that bad?
What I mean is, while we rave about how they bait us to buy the sequel, it has to be expected, and if you don't buy the sequel because of that aspect, then you're greatly missing out.

At least they somewhat fixed Fallout 3 with Broken Steel DLC.

I'd say the biggest letdowns for me were Halo 2 and Crysis. Fucking cliffhangers.

I haven't bought either sequel from those taffers.
Halo 3 closed it all up nicely, and if you completed legendary, it left the possibility open for 343 industries to continue the story. While not exactly sequel bating.
Now I can't speak for Crysis, because I never finished one, or played two, but it was to be expected. Any game with a planned sequel will do that, whether blatantly or subtly is the key though. Don't hate the game because they tried to bait you for the sequel, hate the game for what it is, especially if it's garbage. Like Superman 64.
Anyhow, on Topic, Borderlands had a bad ending, and the entire "Stand-alone Add-on" kick Assassin's Creed 2 is on makes me angry too. Or the ODST ending, it didn't really end, because they never finished the campaign, cause Microsoft are giant tools.

Halo 2. "The Master Chief has returned to Earth. Shit is about to kick o- It's fucking over?!"

In the middle of a cutscene the game ends. It was clearly a cutscene that was meant to bridge a transition not to end the game.
Basically, yeah. Bungie's budget ran out or something. I didn't really mind the cliff hanger (even if it was pretty abrupt), but it also had the unfortunate result of making Halo 3's story seemed a little rushed since it was originally the climax of Halo 2.

OT: Hmm...biggest letdown. Gonna have to go with Kotor 2. Just had to have a Christmas cash-in, didn't you, LucasArts? >_>

KotOR 2. I mean, what. The. Fuck.
It's a shame LucasArts pushed Obsidian to release the game before it was ready.
I agree. It's a real pity, because I felt that with a couple more months of dev time, that game could have been something special.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty was pretty bad:

Quick, deactivate the nuke!

Whoops, you're too late.

Assassin's Creed 1. Mainly because you don't know what the hell is going on after you get out of the Animus. Either way, I still love the series and I can't wait for Revelations to come out.

Borderlands. You kill that large thing and then the Vault closes! I wanted to see what was at least inside!
I think the vault is to keep that thing in. I don't think it had any treasure, I just think it was built to save the galaxy from that thing.

For me it's:

Fallout 3 before the DLC.

Clive Barker's Jericho (have to confess I really loved this game...so gory and crazy...but the ending just...that was it?!)

KOTOR2 >_<

and finally

Fable 3

I've always had a soft spot for the fable games, but the way the whole ending was handled in this one. Yea i'm not even gonna touch Fable 4. *growl*

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on the Game Boy. I hate in general when a game or TV show does the whole "it was all a dream" crap but it took me forever to finish this game because first one got stolen. Then when I finally did it was like a slap in the face AND a giant fuck you to find the whole game is really pointless.
I really loved that ending. The scene were you see everything fade, every character you met, every location, all disappear... it's a very grim ending to say the least. It wasn't exactly "just a dream", everything was created by the dream but it was still real... and then they all ceased to be.

I was pissed off first time I played it because I really didn't expect such a downer ending, I thought there would be some way to save everyone but nope. I've grown to love that ending, definitely my favorite in the series. The only thing I don't like is how they never explain how Link can play 8 instruments simultaneously, which really strained my suspension of disbelief.
