All I know about video game consoles pre-N64/PS1 is what the Angry Video Game Nerd told me. And while it looks like there are some failed consoles out there I don't think I'm in a position to comment on something I've never experienced.
But while we're at the N64 controller I wouldn't say the design is it's biggest problem. I would rather do with the control stick. Surley most people must have noticed how it gets sloppy after too much use (HAHA! Yeah, we're all thinking it, no need to say it). As far as I know it's the only controller that becomes unusable after a while. And don't even get me started on the Mario Party hand palm blisters, man, those hurt -.-
Also I guess the RRoD classifies as a major failure. And even though the PS3 is recovering I still don't think most people consider the Blue Ray necessary, at least not at the moment.
edit: also, one thing that has bothered me with the 360 since I bought it is that it was designed for HD-TV. Seriously, not everyone can or wants to afford those things
